The largest sculpture in the world? Not sure, but it is big. The biggest in London. It was designed and built by Sir Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond. Kapoor and Balmond believe that Orbit represents a radical advance in the architectural field of combining sculpture and structural engineering, and that it combines both stability and instability in a work that visitors can engage with and experience via an incorporated spiral walkway. It has been both praised and criticised for its bold design. It has also been criticised as a vanity project, of questionable lasting use or merit as a public art project. I loved the mirrors at the top! Said to have cost 1million pounds each.

This film features views of the structure from ground level, as well as the lift ride up the structure, views from the structure over the Olympic Park, Stratford and London, and views within the observation pods, where two £1million concave mirrors are located that give some interesting visual effects.
The film ends with the lift ride down the Orbit to ground level. This is an excellent visitor attraction, and well worth a visit.

The ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower is being turned into the world’s tallest slide
Today is a great day, because today it’s been announced that the ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower (you know, that big sculpture that looks like a helter skelter) is going to be turned into the world’s tallest slide.
The sculpture – which was designed by Turner-prize winning artist Anish Kapoor – sits in the Olympic park, and at 114m is the UKs tallest sculpture.
The slide will start at the 80m point and spiral around the tower five times before a final 50m route down to the ground.
The descent will take about 40 seconds, and you’ll be travelling at an average speed will be six metres a second.
Oh, and there’ll be transparent sections on the slide, so you can marvel at the view. Gulp.
On the website for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park they explain: ‘The enclosed steel tube will wind its way in and out of the lattice work of the ArcelorMittal Orbit, twisting down to the ground as an alternative to the staircase.’

The ArcelorMittal Orbit is a sculpture and observation tower in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. It is Britain's largest piece of public art and is intended to be a permanent lasting legacy of London's hosting of the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, assisting in the post-Olympics regeneration of the Stratford area. Feel the ground disappear as you make the short journey by lift, 80m to the top viewing platform of the ArcelorMittal Orbit where you will experience a show-stopping panorama.
Take in a totally new perspective of London with views of up to 20 miles into the city and over the parklands, waterways and world-class sporting venues of London’s newest Park, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The wave-shaped roof of the Aquatics Centre can be seen in its full glory, now the temporary spectator wings have been removed. Take a hawk’s eye view over the magnificent Stadium, the future new home of West Ham United Football Club and look down on the unique and intimate gardens of the newly landscaped south of the Park.
Looking beyond the Park, visitors to the ArcelorMittal Orbit will have the chance to see five football grounds, and many of London’s iconic buildings: The Shard, BT Tower, The Gherkin, Big Ben, Canary Wharf, the O2 Arena and Emirates Airline. Those with a keen eye will also spot new additions to the skyline, such as the Walkie Talkie and the Cheesegrater. The ArcelorMittal Orbit took 18 months to build, using 560 metres of steel. This time-lapse footage shows the sculpture taking shape beside the Olympic stadium. Steel was chosen for the ArcelorMittal Orbit because of its unique properties including strength, modular structure and advantages of weight and speed of construction.
As a tier-two sponsor of London 2012, ArcelorMittal committed to funding up to £19.6 million of the £22.7 million cost of the ArcelorMittal Orbit, with the outstanding £3.1 million provided by the London Development Agency. It has been estimated that the resulting visitor attraction will generate up to £10 million of revenue a year and has created up to 50 new jobs.
The ArcelorMittal Orbit will sit at the centre of the South Plaza in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park -- the new name for the Olympic Park when it reopens - and will give visitors 360 views of London's skyline and all the attractions of the park.

The largest sculpture in the world? Not sure, but it is big. The biggest in London. It was designed and built by Sir Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond. Kapoor and Balmond believe that Orbit represents a radical advance in the architectural field of combining sculpture and structural engineering, and that it combines both stability and instability in a work that visitors can engage with and experience via an incorporated spiral walkway. It has been both praised and criticised for its bold design. It has also been criticised as a vanity project, of questionable lasting use or merit as a public art project. I loved the mirrors at the top! Said to have cost 1million pounds each.

The ArcelorMittal Orbit is a 114.5 metre (376 feet) tall sculpture and observation tower in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. It is Britain's largest piece of public art, and is intended to be a permanent lasting legacy of London's hosting of the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, assisting in the post-Olympics regeneration of the Stratford area. Sited between the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre, it allows visitors to view the whole Olympic Park from two observation platforms.
Orbit was designed by Turner-Prize winning artist Sir Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond of engineering Group Arup.
This film features views of the structure from ground level, as well as the lift ride up the structure, views from the structure over the Olympic Park, Stratford and London, and views within the observation pods, where two £1million concave mirrors are located that give some interesting visual effects.
The film ends with the lift ride down the Orbit to ground level. This is an excellent visitor attraction, and well worth a visit.

Today is a great day, because today it’s been announced that the ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower (you know, that big sculpture that looks like a helter skelter) is going to be turned into the world’s tallest slide.
The sculpture – which was designed by Turner-prize winning artist Anish Kapoor – sits in the Olympic park, and at 114m is the UKs tallest sculpture.
The slide will start at the 80m point and spiral around the tower five times before a final 50m route down to the ground.
The descent will take about 40 seconds, and you’ll be travelling at an average speed will be six metres a second.
Oh, and there’ll be transparent sections on the slide, so you can marvel at the view. Gulp.
On the website for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park they explain: ‘The enclosed steel tube will wind its way in and out of the lattice work of the ArcelorMittal Orbit, twisting down to the ground as an alternative to the staircase.’

Steel was chosen for the ArcelorMittal Orbit because of its unique properties including strength, modular structure and advantages of weight and speed of construction.
As a tier-two sponsor of London 2012, ArcelorMittal committed to funding up to £19.6 million of the £22.7 million cost of the ArcelorMittal Orbit, with the outstanding £3.1 million provided by the London Development Agency. It has been estimated that the resulting visitor attraction will generate up to £10 million of revenue a year and has created up to 50 new jobs.
The ArcelorMittal Orbit will sit at the centre of the South Plaza in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park -- the new name for the Olympic Park when it reopens - and will give visitors 360 views of London's skyline and all the attractions of the park.

In an inspired piece of Olympics legacy development, a sculpture that was created for the 2012 Games in London is to become "the world's tallest and longest slide." Visitors will be able to descend from the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit. The sculpture already welcomes visitors as an observation tower. Lee and I abseiled down the ArcelorMittal Orbit to raise money for MCCH, a charity who supports those in the South East with a learning disability, autism or mental heath needs. The money we raised from the abseil will be used towards a brand new service for young people with learning disabilities, who are going through the transition to adulthood, supporting them to live independently in their own flats after leaving residential college or home. Designed as an icon for the 2012 Games by Turner Prize-winning artist Sir Anish Kapoor and structural designer Cecil Balmond, the 114.5-m (376-ft) ArcelorMittal Orbit is Britain's tallest sculpture and symbolizes the effort of Olympians. Its red looping steelwork is wrapped around a central trunk that houses its stairs, lifts and two viewing platforms.
According to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where the ArcelorMittal Orbit is located, it is the only observation tower that looks from the east of London back into the city center. On a clear day, its two viewing platforms give visitors views of up to 20 mi (32 km) in all directions, as well as a bird’s eye view of the Olympic Park.
Following the approval of planning permission, visitors to the viewing platforms will no longer need to descend the tower via the elevators or stairs, the latter of which takes around 12 minutes. The newly-installed slide will weave around the tower and will get visitors to the bottom in just 40 seconds. Lee and I abseiled down the ArcelorMittal Orbit to raise money for MCCH, a charity who supports those in the South East with a learning disability, autism or mental heath needs.
The money we raised from the abseil will be used towards a brand new service for young people with learning disabilities, who are going through the transition to adulthood, supporting them to live independently in their own flats after leaving residential college or home. It a fantastic cause that will help young people have the same opportunities as anyone else!

Enjoy a spectacular birds eye view and get to take in the London skyline from the air by joining us on a sky high "Point of View" (POV) ride across the River Thames, (crossing from Royal Docks to Greenwich Peninsula and then back again). The Emirates Air Line (aka The Thames Cable Car) is the UK's first urban cable car, it's a 1 kilometre (0.62 mile) cable car link across the River Thames which rises up to 90 metres. Each cabin can hold up to 10 people. Weekends (Fri, Sat & Sun) are busy times to visit & less busy times are on the weekdays (Mon to Thu). The service opened on the 28 June 2012 just in time for the London Olympics. A Walk Through the City of London from Barbican to London Bridge, England - 14th June, 2014
This film features a walk through the City of London, starting at the Barbican Estate and finishing at the Southwark side of London Bridge. It highlights the varied architecture of the city including the 1960s brutalist buildings of the Barbican Estate, to the high-tech glass skyscrapers and historic gothic, regency and classic buildings, monuments and statues. Part of the film has been made on the high level walkways which stem from the Barbican estate, allowing an elevated view of the surroundings. From London Walls the film goes to street level. The first part shows a reunion of cross country cyclists, plus a father and son who were still on their transcontinental journey. This event was held at the Acorn Inn, in honor of June Curry, the Cookie Lady of Afton, Virginia, who was so nice to thousands of cyclists who passed by on the Bikecentennial/Adventure Cycling Trans-America Bicycle Route. This film features a walk through the City of London, starting at the Barbican Estate and finishing at the Southwark side of London Bridge. It highlights the varied architecture of the city including the 1960s brutalist buildings of the Barbican Estate, to the high-tech glass skyscrapers and historic gothic, regency and classic buildings, monuments and statues. Part of the film has been made on the high level walkways which stem from the Barbican estate, allowing an elevated view of the surroundings. From London Walls the film goes to street level. If you are visiting London and would like to see the sights for yourself, the best way is to walk, rather than take public transport. This walk is one I would definitely recommend.

This event was held at the Acorn Inn, in honor of June Curry, the Cookie Lady of Afton, Virginia, who was so nice to thousands of cyclists who passed by on the Bikecentennial/Adventure Cycling Trans-America Bicycle Route. Later on, the video shows June's Bike House and some of the cyclists who were visiting there. She was nice to everyone, including this cyclist!
