Carate Brianza is a town and comune in the province of Monza and Brianza. The city lies at an altitude ranging from 230 and 300 m above sea level, on the Lambro river.
The history of Carate Brianza dates back to the Stone Age, as shown by a discovery made of carved rocks that are now preserved in the Archeological Museum of Milan.
The Lombard Queen Theodolinda built in this town a tower, which later was turned into the bell tower for the main church. After the 10th century, a wall was built around the town to protect it from barbarian attacks. The Middle Age was characterized by the spreading of the Christianity, so five churches were built and also a hospital.
During the 19th century a famous jurist and philosopher, Gian Domenico Romagnosi, lived in Carate.
Sights include the "Villa Cusani Confalonieri", originally built as a castle and that became municipal property when the family died out. Now you can find there a park and the public library.
The imposing church of Sant' Ambrogio e Simpliciano, built in the 19th century, is situated in the centre of the town, near the statue of Sant'Anatalone, which has been restored recently.
