I was so sure it was false. Oh, I was so sure. I got four toasters set to "2", and I had one take to film it all in a back room at my office. This is that one take.

UPDATE: Dominic points out in the comments that modern toasters may not use bi-metallic strips: "the 'old/basic' way of doing this. What happens in more modern toasters is a capacitor is charged through a variable resistor. Once a specific voltage is reached in the capacitor it cuts off. The knob controls the variable resistor charging the capacitor." Thanks!

The challenge was set up to show how much energy we humans consume compared to what we can generate. This is a graduation project from the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts filmed in Stockholm, Sweden.
The finishing examples estimate how many Roberts that would be needed to power either a petrol car consuming 6,5l/100km for one hour, or a one-hour Boeing 737-800 flight.

Toaster
A toaster a.k.a. a toast maker, is a small electric appliance designed to brown or "sing[e]" sliced bread by exposing it to radiant heat, thus converting it into toast. Toasters can toast multiple types of sliced bread products. Invented in Scotland in 1893, it was developed over the years, with the introduction of an automatic mechanism to stop the toasting and pop the slices up–the "pop up toaster" in 1919 being a significant development. The most common household toasting appliances in the 2010s are the pop-up toaster and the toaster oven. Bread slices are inserted into slots in the top of a pop-up toaster, which make toast from bread in one to three minutes by using electric heating elements. Toasters have a control to adjust how much the appliance toasts the bread. Since the 2000s, pop-up toasters with wider slots have been manufactured, enabling them to toast bagels cut in half or thick-sliced "Texas toast". Another trend of the 2000s is the increasing availability of four-slice toasters.

Between the bodies he ends up having to hide from his girlfriend (Savering) and the cop next door (Jones), Callahan simply won't have enough time to deal with his beautiful, stalker landlady (Elliott) or college ex-girlfriend (Winteringham) when they come a-calling. The script was originally a play written as a class project for my playwright class. It proved very popular, and we attempted to stage it as a student production. Not able to get the rehearsal space for enough time, we decided to simply shoot a film to screen during our allotted time. The film proved a longer endeavor, and we missed our original deadline by over a year. Blockbuster Video was having a contest for indie filmmakers at the time. At home production was still in its infancy, and the production values must have been short of expectation all around. Do The Numbers On Toaster Dials Mean Minutes?

I was so sure it was false. Oh, I was so sure. I got four toasters set to "2", and I had one take to film it all in a back room at my office. This is that one take. Thanks to Dan W (@iamdanw) on camera and Jonty (@jonty) on toaster-wrangling! UPDATE: Dominic points out in the comments that modern toasters may not use bi-metallic strips: "the 'old/basic' way of doing this. What happens in more modern toasters is a capacitor is charged through a variable resistor. Once a specific voltage is reached in the capacitor it cuts off. The knob controls the variable resistor charging the capacitor." Thanks!

World famous track cyclist Robert Förstemann battles a 700w toaster. Can he, with his 74cm legs, generate enough energy to create a golden-brown toast? Please like, share and comment! The challenge was set up to show how much energy we humans consume compared to what we can generate. This is a graduation project from the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts filmed in Stockholm, Sweden. The finishing examples estimate how many Roberts that would be needed to power either a petrol car consuming 6,5l/100km for one hour, or a one-hour Boeing 737-800 flight.
