Before the Rains is set in 1930s Malabar District of the Madras Presidency of British India, against the backdrop of a growing nationalist movement. An idealistic young Indian man, T.K. (Rahul Bose) finds himself torn between his ambitions for the future and his loyalty to tradition when people in his village learn of an affair between his British boss and close friend Henry Moores (Linus Roache) and a married village woman Sajani (Nandita Das).
Henry and T.K. are working on building a road in rural Kerala. The start of the film focuses on the affair between Henry and his house maid Sajani. They make love near a waterfall, witnessed by two children who flee. Both Henry and Sajani are married to different partners and both know of each other's marriages. Henry's wife and son return from their vacation in England. Sajani is distraught but Henry assures Sajani that she is the one he loves. Sajani's violent husband finds out about her infidelity and brutally beats her. Sajani flees to Henry's house; Henry instructs T.K. to take her away into hiding. T.K tells Sajani never to come back as she is now disgraced and her presence in the village will endanger Henry's life. Sajani does not believe T.K but leaves nonetheless. During this time, resentment towards the British grows stronger; news about an adulterous act between an Indian woman and a British man would be inflammatory.
Sajani's love for Henry drives her back to Henry's house. Henry tells her to leave and admits that he does not love her. A distraught Sajani finds T.K's handgun (a gift from Henry), shoots herself in the chest, and dies. T.K. and Henry throw her body in the river to conceal her death.
Sajani's disappearance garners interest in the village. Sajani's brother and husband gather the men of the village to search the jungle. The same two children who discovered Sajani and Henry near the waterfall then discover her body. It is established that a bullet from an English pistol killed her. A mob led by Sajani's husband attacks T.K., the only Indian man around with a handgun. The bullet and the handgun match and T.K is tried by the village council for murder. T.K is forced to tell the truth to the council, while Henry's wife discovers her husband's affair and his involvement in Sajani's death and leaves her husband to return to England.
T.K proves his innocence to the council in a test by fire. The council elders tell T.K. that he has to kill Henry to get his honour back since he aided and abetted in covering up a killing. Sajani's brother and T.K. go to kill Henry. When it comes to the moment for T.K to kill Henry, he cannot pull the trigger but instead tells Henry that no man owns anything, it belongs to everyone. The film ends with the onset of the monsoon. Henry and T.K's road holds and does not yield to the pouring rains.

Filmmaker and actor Nandita Das talks to Attika Choudhary about her forthcoming film inspired by the legendary writer, Saadat Hasan Manto. Regarded as a 'Partition' writer, and one claimed both by India and Pakistan, he was one of the most engimatic figures of his time with the richness of his cultural life in Amritsar, Lahore and Bombay (as it was then) dazzlingly reflected in his writing. Das also discusses the independent filmmaking scene in India and Pakistan and talks about making a work that will speak to both countries and aim to bring them just a little closer together (at the very least artistically) in a shared heritage.
She also talks about her desire for the film to have a wide global platform...as more people in the West should appreciate stories from the East - "After all we know their artists and writers..."

love and guilt are replaced by lust and crime and racial bigotry is the ultimate metaphor for a cultural clash where marital disharmony is juxtaposed on adultery and surreal human behaviour emanating from egoistical desires which are primal yet controversial in the conservative perspective ,
nandita das and linus roache as the daring lovers, who break the taboo of interracial mingling by indulging their passion, are superb but it is rahul bose who steals the intelligent drama with his stoic ,languid but stupendous silence which can move mountains when the moment arrives as the private assistant of the anglo officer who wants to inhabit both the anglo-indian spheres .
they are all victims of circumstances but there are no martyrs or heroes here and the movie triumphs with portraying the human beings with their shame and flaws as we mortals were designed and that makes it immensely powerful and celebrated art .
kudos to santosh sivan and rahul bose for creating an intelligent movie in a year where a handful can be included in that rare category .

My all time favourite film Fire, by Deepa Mehta, from the Fire, Earth, Water trilogy and in my opinion the best one!
Go and watch it!!! It's great, this montage has just my favourite scenes but there are many more characters and storylines in the film!

Nandita Das (born 7 November 1969) is an award-winning Indian film actress and director. As an actress, she is known for her performances in Fire (1996), Earth (1998), Bawandar (2000), Kannathil Muthamittal (2002) and Aamaar Bhuvan (2002). As a director, she is known for her directorial debut Firaaq (2008), which has won a number of national and international awards. She has been awarded the Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Government of France for her work.. Nandita Das was the first Indian to be inducted into their International Women's Forum's hall of fame.
Das was born in New Delhi to noted Indian painter, Jatin Das, an Oriya Hindu Kayastha (Karanam or "Karan"), and a Gujarati Jain mother named Varsha who is a writer.
She went to Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, Lodhi Estate in New Delhi. She received her bachelor's degree in Geography from Miranda House (University of Delhi) and Master of Social Work from the Delhi School of Social Work.
Nandita Das started her acting career with the theatre group Jana Natya Manch. She taught at the Rishi Valley School.

Kudos to M/s Doshi and Mundhra for taking up this bold subject which did not fit in the usual commercial film formula. A sensitively directed film, it deals with the worst form of exploitation inflicted on the lower castes by the powerful upper caste community, and shows how the bureaucracy, administration and judiciary is maneuvered by them to attain their ends. Extremely sensitively portrayed by Nandita Das in the pivotal role, it is a " shocking story .........., with bright landscape, colourful attire, and picture postcard beauty, but scratch the surface, and find the dark realities of casteism, chauvinism and exploitation", as succinctly described in the film itself. Nandita Das herself said (Mumbai Mirror-29.07.2011), "In the film, I played the character of an illiterate woman.... She .. is still fighting for justice. As an actor, I went through her journey of being ..... abused, humiliated and threatened. Though I just had to emote, the ......... scene was emotionally and physically very draining. I ... felt a deep sense of shame and anger.....The woman in me had taken over the actor, and it was one rare time that I screamed on a shoot. That scene made me feel so violated ....... In that moment, I actually felt what a woman goes through when she is ..... physically abused......" This excerpt is just a subdued introduction to the grim realities shown in the film.

T.K is forced to tell the truth to the council, while Henry's wife discovers her husband's affair and his involvement in Sajani's death and leaves her husband to return to England.
T.K proves his innocence to the council in a test by fire. The council elders tell T.K. that he has to kill Henry to get his honour back since he aided and abetted in covering up a killing. Sajani's brother and T.K. go to kill Henry. When it comes to the moment for T.K to kill Henry, he cannot pull the trigger but instead tells Henry that no man owns anything, it belongs to everyone. The film ends with the onset of the monsoon. Henry and T.K's road holds and does not yield to the pouring rains.

nandita das and linus roache as the daring lovers, who break the taboo of interracial mingling by indulging their passion, are superb but it is rahul bose who steals the intelligent drama with his stoic ,languid but stupendous silence which can move mountains when the moment arrives as the private assistant of the anglo officer who wants to inhabit both the anglo-indian spheres .
they are all victims of circumstances but there are no martyrs or heroes here and the movie triumphs with portraying the human beings with their shame and flaws as we mortals were designed and that makes it immensely powerful and celebrated art .
kudos to santosh sivan and rahul bose for creating an intelligent movie in a year where a handful can be included in that rare category .

The question of identity in a globalised world is fraught with personal, societal and political complexities. And in a country like India, identity impinges upon the individual vis-à-vis various divisions, sub divisions and hierarchical notions of religion, language, region, caste, class, occupation
etc. The concept of them and us has frequently polarised groups and formulated public opinion. Firaaq, Ms. Nandita Das directorial debut film, in many ways was an outcome of her varied experiences both as an activist and an artiste.
The lecture, primarily from an experiential perspective, focus upon the increase of identity politics in the country at all three levels and the threat it poses to an inherently pluralistic society.
Nandita Das has won national and international accolades for acting as well as for her maiden
directorial venture, Firaaq. With a Masters Degree in Social Work, she is deeply committed to human rights issues, has worked actively with NGOs in the field and been featured as a speaker advocating social justice at various universities and other forums in India and abroad. She has been conferred the prestigious Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Identity and the Notion of the Other Previous Lectures in the Series Government and has been on the jury of international Film Festivals at Cannes, Karlovy Vary and Marrakech. She is currently the Chairperson of the Childrens Film Society, India.
