Pesut Mahakam adalah salah satu sub-species dari populasi pesut di Sungai Irrawaddy (Myanmar), Sungai Mekong (Kamboja, Laos, dan Vietnam), Danau Songkhla (Thailand), dan Malampaya (Filipina).
D Indonesia, populasi pesut mahakam hanya 50-70 ekor. Karena pesut ini hanya hidup di Sungai Mahakam, ia ditetapkan sebagai fauna identitas provinsi Kalimantan Timur.
Pesut mahakam dewasa memiliki panjang tubuh hingga 2,5 meter dengan berat mencapai 130 kg. Tubuh Pesut berwarna abu-abu atau kelabu sampai biru tua dengan bagian bawah berwarna lebih pucat.
Bentuk badannya hampir oval dengan sirip punggung mengecil dan agak ke belakang. Kepalanya bulat dengan mata kecil. Bagian moncong pendek papak. Sirip punggung yang kecil terletak di belakang pertengahan punggung. Sirip renangnya relatif pendek dan lebar.
Pesut bernapas dengan paru-paru. Jadi, ia mengambil udara di permukaan air. Binatang ini dapat juga menyemburkan air dari mulutnya. Pesut bergerak dalam kawanan kecil. Meski pandangannya tidak begitu tajam dan hidup dalam air berlumpur, pesut memiliki kemampuan mendeteksi dan menghindari rintangan-rintangan dengan menggunakan gelombang ultrasonik.
Ancaman tertinggi kelangkaan populasi Pesut Mahakam diakibatkan oleh belitan jaring nelayan. Selain itu juga akibat terganggunya habitat baik oleh lalu-lintas perairan sungai Mahakam maupun tingginya tingkat pencemaran air, erosi, dan pendangkalan sungai akibat pengelolaan hutan di sekitarnya.

The snubfin dolphins (Orcaella) are a genus of dolphins containing two members: the Irrawaddy Dolphin and Australian Snubfin Dolphin. The genus was long believed to be monotypic with the only species being the Irrawaddy Dolphin; however, in 2005, genetic analysis showed that the Australian Snubfin Dolphin is closely related. Recent molecular analyses indicate that the genus Orcaella is closely related to the Orca of the genus Orcinus, the two of them together forming the subfamily Orcininae.

Pesut Mahakam (Orcaella brevirostris) adalah mamalia air yang unik. Berbeda dengan lumba-lumba dan ikan paus, pesut hidup di air tawar: di sungai dan danau daerah tropis dan subtropis.
Pesut Mahakam adalah salah satu sub-species dari populasi pesut di Sungai Irrawaddy (Myanmar), Sungai Mekong (Kamboja, Laos, dan Vietnam), Danau Songkhla (Thailand), dan Malampaya (Filipina).
D Indonesia, populasi pesut mahakam hanya 50-70 ekor. Karena pesut ini hanya hidup di Sungai Mahakam, ia ditetapkan sebagai fauna identitas provinsi Kalimantan Timur.
Pesut mahakam dewasa memiliki panjang tubuh hingga 2,5 meter dengan berat mencapai 130 kg. Tubuh Pesut berwarna abu-abu atau kelabu sampai biru tua dengan bagian bawah berwarna lebih pucat.
Bentuk badannya hampir oval dengan sirip punggung mengecil dan agak ke belakang. Kepalanya bulat dengan mata kecil. Bagian moncong pendek papak. Sirip punggung yang kecil terletak di belakang pertengahan punggung. Sirip renangnya relatif pendek dan lebar.
Pesut bernapas dengan paru-paru. Jadi, ia mengambil udara di permukaan air. Binatang ini dapat juga menyemburkan air dari mulutnya. Pesut bergerak dalam kawanan kecil. Meski pandangannya tidak begitu tajam dan hidup dalam air berlumpur, pesut memiliki kemampuan mendeteksi dan menghindari rintangan-rintangan dengan menggunakan gelombang ultrasonik.
Ancaman tertinggi kelangkaan populasi Pesut Mahakam diakibatkan oleh belitan jaring nelayan. Selain itu juga akibat terganggunya habitat baik oleh lalu-lintas perairan sungai Mahakam maupun tingginya tingkat pencemaran air, erosi, dan pendangkalan sungai akibat pengelolaan hutan di sekitarnya.
