I stayed up until 4am repeatedly for a month to pack as much into this song as possible, to reach a specific hard deadline. I really put everything into this arrangement in an effort to make it dynamic, exciting, and interesting throughout, and though my skills at the time were pushed to their limits, it paid off pretty well in my mind. I learned a lot working on this, and love the end result. One problem with having a super kickass ReMix of a song that no one has ever played is that it’s really hard to get people to listen to it the first time. I have never even played this game, but the original song is so good, that I felt it had to be rocked out. There isn’t anything more exciting to me than a huge anthem, and we did everything we could to make this as huge as possible, taking the original melody section from a ridiculously obscure game (this song was only on the Sega Game Gear version, which sold like 2 copies) and mixing it with an original chorus section and then an epic ending. Speaking of endings, this is the first time I ever employed the ending keychange fakeout, where it does what first appears to be a standard keychange to play the chorus again, but then after a few bars it keychanges again into it’s TRUE FORM! From there lead out into a triplet feel ending and finish on a high note. The true strength of this remix is the amount of variation of the sections. Though there are verses, choruses, etc, each time they come back they feel different due to the instrumentation. Often the rhythm parts are changed; the drums don’t have a distinct repeating part for the entire song. Some section repeats have additional elements added, such as a responding guitar to the lead, or some synth craziness, and some take it all away, like the tiny snare solo right before it drops to just Moonlapse’s vocals. This is one of my songs that has a ton of original material that almost makes it like a mashup rather than just an arrangement or a Remix, and I could put this on an album and it’s unlikely anyone would recognize the original song as being from a game. Level99 did some great work on this as well, providing the rhythm guitars and some leads, as well as being a great idea man. A ton of the great variation you hear in this sprouted from seeds of his ideas. Moonlapse is one of my favorite vocalists ever, and it’s awesome that he is so open to working with me. He was pushed pretty far back in this mix, but it was only a matter of time before I was able to put him to the forefront of a vocal track.
