The Cretaceous--Paleogene (K--Pg) extinction event, formerly known as the Cretaceous--Tertiary (K--T) extinction, was a mass extinction of some three-quarters of plant and animal species on Earth—including all non-avian dinosaurs—that occurred over a geologically short period of time 66 million years (Mya) ago.
In the geologic record, the K--Pg event is marked by a thin layer of sediment called the K--Pg boundary, which can be found throughout the world in marine and terrestrial rocks. The boundary clay shows high levels of the metal iridium, which is rare in the Earth's crust but abundant in asteroids.
It is estimated that 75% or more of all species on Earth vanished. Yet the devastation caused by the extinction also provided evolutionary opportunities. In the wake of the extinction, many groups underwent remarkable adaptive radiations — a sudden and prolific divergence into new forms and species within the disrupted and emptied ecological niches resulting from the event. Mammals in particular diversified in the Paleogene, producing new forms such as horses, whales, bats, and primates. Birds, fish and perhaps lizards also radiated.

About 66 million years ago, 70 percent of all the species that existed at the time, including the non-avian dinosaurs, became extinct in an apocalypse widely thought to have been caused by a meteor or comet impact on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. At approximately the same time, a series of volcanic eruptions in Western India produced torrents of lava that discharged large amounts of carbon dioxide and sulfur gas into the atmosphere. Mark Richards reviews these remarkable events and explains a radical new theory suggesting they may be causally related. He also discusses how ongoing research is shedding new light on the true cause(s) of the Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction.

The Cretaceous (
/krɪˈteɪʃəs/, kri-TEY-shuhs), derived from the Latin "creta" (chalk), usually abbreviated K for its German translation Kreide (chalk), is a geologic period and system from circa 145.5 ± 4 to 65.5 ± 0.3 million years (Ma) ago. In the geologic timescale, the Cretaceous follows the Jurassic period and is followed by the Paleogene period of the Cenozoic era. It is the youngest period of the Mesozoic era, and at 80 million years long, the longest period of the Phanerozoic Eon. The end of the Cretaceous defines the boundary between the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras. In many languages this period is known as "chalk period".
The Cretaceous was a period with a relatively warm climate, resulting in high eustatic sea levels and creating numerous shallow inland seas. These oceans and seas were populated with now extinct marine reptiles, ammonites and rudists, while dinosaurs continued to dominate on land. At the same time, new groups of mammals and birds, as well as flowering plants, appeared. The Cretaceous ended with a large mass extinction, the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, in which many groups, including non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and large marine reptiles, died out.

The Cretaceous--Paleogene (K--Pg) extinction event, formerly known as the Cretaceous--Tertiary (K--T) extinction, was a mass extinction of some three-quarters of plant and animal species on Earth—including all non-avian dinosaurs—that occurred over a geologically short period of time 66 million years (Mya) ago. In the geologic record, the K--Pg event is marked by a thin layer of sediment called the K--Pg boundary, which can be found throughout the world in marine and terrestrial rocks. The boundary clay shows high levels of the metal iridium, which is rare in the Earth's crust but abundant in asteroids. It is estimated that 75% or more of all species on Earth vanished. The Cretaceous-Tertiary Mass Extinction: What Really Killed the Dinosaurs?
About 66 million years ago, 70 percent of all the species that existed at the time, including the non-avian dinosaurs, became extinct in an apocalypse widely thought to have been caused by a meteor or comet impact on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. At approximately the same time, a series of volcanic eruptions in Western India produced torrents of lava that discharged large amounts of carbon dioxide and sulfur gas into the atmosphere. Mark Richards reviews these remarkable events and explains a radical new theory suggesting they may be causally related. In nature, there is no good or bad. Only those that are hungry and those that are food. NOTE: If you're squeamish about blood (or blood that looks like ketchup), this might not be for you. This short's different on a whole bunch of levels. Most obviously, I went for a much more realistic art style and used multiple layers for each character. It's also the most serious (and violent!) animation I've done, and for once I actually slipped some subtext and underlying themes in there. See if you can figure them out. This is a rather short short, though I actually haven't spent this much time on a Flash since Jackanapes (I started last week), and most of the time spent on that was voice acting-related. In the geologic record, the K--Pg event is marked by a thin layer of sediment called the K--Pg boundary, which can be found throughout the world in marine and terrestrial rocks. The boundary clay shows high levels of the metal iridium, which is rare in the Earth's crust but abundant in asteroids.
It is estimated that 75% or more of all species on Earth vanished. Yet the devastation caused by the extinction also provided evolutionary opportunities. In the wake of the extinction, many groups underwent remarkable adaptive radiations — a sudden and prolific divergence into new forms and species within the disrupted and emptied ecological niches resulting from the event. Mammals in particular diversified in the Paleogene, producing new forms such as horses, whales, bats, and primates. Birds, fish and perhaps lizards also radiated.

This animation shows the plate tectonic and paleogeographic evolution, during the Cretaceous, of the 4 major ocean basins: the North Atlantic, the South Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, and the Circum-Antarctic Oceans. The land areas (green) and mountains (brown) continuously change due to erosion and the rise and fall of sea level. New mountains form as continents collide or rift apart. Shallow seas (less than 200 m deep) flood the continents (light blue). Sea floor spreading takes place in the deep oceans (dark blue) at mid-ocean ridges. The dashed line across the globe is the Equator.

In nature, there is no good or bad. Only those that are hungry and those that are food.
NOTE: If you're squeamish about blood (or blood that looks like ketchup), this might not be for you.
This short's different on a whole bunch of levels. Most obviously, I went for a much more realistic art style and used multiple layers for each character. It's also the most serious (and violent!) animation I've done, and for once I actually slipped some subtext and underlying themes in there. See if you can figure them out.
This is a rather short short, though I actually haven't spent this much time on a Flash since Jackanapes (I started last week), and most of the time spent on that was voice acting-related. I was originally going to use photographic backgrounds, but they didn't mesh well with the characters and so I opted for drawing my own.
