Darbar Festival presents the very best of classical music to our audiences, in this amazing performance of indian instrumental music, you will hear Jayanthi Kumaresh playing the saraswati veena accompanied by Patri Satish Kumar on the mridangam and with RN Prakash playing the ghatam, Mithila Sarma plays the tanpura. In this fantastic concert Jayanthi performs Raga Shanmukhapriya during the Darbar Festival 2013 at the Southbank Centre, London. Jayanthi Kumaresh is indisputably one of the best Saraswati veena players in India and one of the most popular Carnatic musicians of today. She began playing this traditional lute at the age of four and is the great-niece of legendary violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman with whom she played on many occasions. Jayanthi Kumaresh performs Raga Shanmukhapriya through her graceful, emotive and expressive form. A seventh generation musician and multi award winner brings to the Festival one of India's oldest instruments, the Saraswati (Goddess of the Arts) veena. The veena is one of the three celestial musical instruments, now in danger of extinction, which makes this concert very rare. Darbar Festival was established in 2006 and takes place annually in London. It gives audiences the opportunity to explore some of the best improvised classical music in the world. Pancharatna Kritis of Sri Thygaraja Jagadananda Karaka - 00:03 Thudukugala - 10:16 Sadhaninche - 19:53 Kana Kana Ruchire - 30:25 Endaro Mahanu Bhavulu - 45:31 Veena is a plucked stringed instrument originating in ancient India, used mainly in Carnatic classical music and Hindustani classical music. The name is used for several instruments belonging to different families, mainly the Rudra Veena (a zither) and the Saraswati veena (a necked bowl lute) but also to other types of plucked string instruments (Mohan Veena, Ancient Veena etc). The earliest Veena was an instrument of the harp type whose type survives in the Burmese harp, whereas in the last centuries and nowadays, the word has tended to be applied to instruments of the lute type or even, recently, to certain kinds of guitars developed in India. The more popular sitar is believed to have been derived from a type of Veena which was modified by a Mughal court musician to conform with the tastes of his Persian patrons. A person who plays a Veena is called a vainika. Veena (18 July 1926 - 14 November 2004) also known as Veena Kumari her real name is Tajour Sultana was a female actress in India.

Veena was born as Tajour Sultana on 4 July 1926 in Quetta, Balochistan, British India. At some point of time, her family shifted to Lahore and she belonged to Lahore's Chuna Mandi. She started out playing heroine roles in Pre-Partition films. She made her debut with Garib and Gawandhi (1942) at around sixteen years of age. Garib was made in Urdu and Gawandhi was made in Punjabi and directed by Mehboob Khan. In Garib, she played the role of Lata and in Gawandhi she played heroine opposite Shyam who played the hero. She became famous as actress and heroine in Pre-Partition Hindi and Urdu films. Her early years in films came with films like Najma (1943), Phool (1945), and Humayun (1945). Her last film before the Partition of India was Rajputani (1946) in which she played a supporting role. She decided to remain in India after the partition and she acted through the mid-to-late-1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and early-1980s. She played roles in big films like Halaku (1956), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Taj Mahal (1963) (for which she received the Filmfare's Award for Best Supporting Actress), Do Raaste (1969), and Pakeezah (1972). She retired in 1983 after the release of Razia Sultan (1983) in which she played Empress Shah Turkhan. She died in Bombay in 2004 after 21 years of retirement when she was 78 years old after suffering from a protracted illness. She had appeared in over 70 feature films in a career spanning 41 years (1942 till 1983).

Having the chance to study Rudra Vina with Khan Sahib since mid of the 90ties I was fortunate enough to accompany him on quite a lot of concerts. Whenever I had the chance and the equipment with me I recorded those. Needless to say, that there are just too few recordings available from the great Master of traditional Rudra Vina. The name is used for several instruments belonging to different families, mainly the Rudra Veena (a zither) and the Saraswati veena (a necked bowl lute) but also to other types of plucked string instruments (Mohan Veena, Ancient Veena etc). The earliest Veena was an instrument of the harp type whose type survives in the Burmese harp, whereas in the last centuries and nowadays, the word has tended to be applied to instruments of the lute type or even, recently, to certain kinds of guitars developed in India. The more popular sitar is believed to have been derived from a type of Veena which was modified by a Mughal court musician to conform with the tastes of his Persian patrons. A person who plays a Veena is called a vainika. Having the chance to study Rudra Vina with Khan Sahib since mid of the 90ties I was fortunate enough to accompany him on quite a lot of concerts. Whenever I had the chance and the equipment with me I recorded those. Needless to say, that there are just too few recordings available from the great Master of traditional Rudra Vina. So we open the Stage with a recording of Yaman Kalyan, one of Ustadjis favorites. This concert was played on the European Tour 2003 in Dresden, Villa Salzburg on 4th of May. Chitti Babu (October 13, 1936 – February 9, 1996) was a renowned classical musician from India, and arguably one of the greatest Veena artistes, in the Carnatic Music genre of South India, who became a legend in his own lifetime. His name was synonymous with the musical instrument Veena, and he was and still is known in the Carnatic Music world, simply as Veena Chitti Babu. Chitti Babu Challapally (surname) was born on October 13, 1936, in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India, to music-loving parents, Ranga Rao Challapally and Sundaramma Challapally, who had initially named him Hanumanlu, when he was born. Chitti Babu was his nickname at home, which came to stay eventually, after his father formally changed it to be so. Chitti Babu gave his first performance at the age of 12. He had his earliest basic lessons from Shri. Pandravada Upmakaya and also Shri Eyyuni Appalacharyulu and later was a prime disciple of MahaMahopadhyaya Dr Emani Sankara Sastry. He playing Veena for numerous background scores in movie soundtracks under the batons of many eminent music directors of the time like Saluri Rajeswara Rao, Pendyala Nageswara Rao, and the duo of Viswanathan-Ramamoorthi among others. While continuing with the principles of his Guru's pioneering school – the Emani "Bani" (tradition/style), Chitti Babu, created and evolved a distinctive style and identity, entirely his own. The exquisite tonal quality and versatility that have been his magical hallmarks of his style of playing the Veena, saw him produce sounds as varied as the majestic Vedic Hymns or as delicate as the Cuckoo's voice or even play many western-music based compositions of his own. Throughout his glittering career, he won many accolades regularly from almost all major cultural organizations in India and abroad. Many had also conferred numerous honorary titles on him (as is traditional to honor someone in India) and were presented to him by senior artistes, government officials, and other eminent people of his time, from all walks of life. Some of the more well-known ones are Sangeet Natak Akademi award for 1990, Kalaimamani – 1972, Sangeetha Choodamani – Krishna Gana Sabha – 1990, Sangeetha Kala Nipuna – Mylapore Fine Arts Club – 1995 and mores. Jayanthi Kumaresh is indisputably one of the best Saraswati veena players in India and one of the most popular Carnatic musicians of today. She began playing this traditional lute at the age of four and is the great-niece of legendary violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman with whom she played on many occasions. Jayanthi Kumaresh performs Raga Shanmukhapriya through her graceful, emotive and expressive form. A seventh generation musician and multi award winner brings to the Festival one of India's oldest instruments, the Saraswati (Goddess of the Arts) veena. The veena is one of the three celestial musical instruments, now in danger of extinction, which makes this concert very rare. Darbar Festival was established in 2006 and takes place annually in London. It gives audiences the opportunity to explore some of the best improvised classical music in the world. The name is used for several instruments belonging to different families, mainly the Rudra Veena (a zither) and the Saraswati veena (a necked bowl lute) but also to other types of plucked string instruments (Mohan Veena, Ancient Veena etc). The earliest Veena was an instrument of the harp type whose type survives in the Burmese harp, whereas in the last centuries and nowadays, the word has tended to be applied to instruments of the lute type or even, recently, to certain kinds of guitars developed in India. The more popular sitar is believed to have been derived from a type of Veena which was modified by a Mughal court musician to conform with the tastes of his Persian patrons.
