SUMMARY
In this video Laci Green discusses dress code controversies. She outlines the distinction between a dress code and a sexist dress code and offers 5 reasons why these are harmful. In part 2, she discusses concerns about hyper-sexualization. In part 3, she outlines the actions taken by viewers in the past and calls others to action.
The dress codes at high school, even college at times, can be pretty far out there. Parents and teachers are much more sensitive to teenagers fashion choices and because they have certain legal authority, especially parents, they enforce a dress code violation system for the teens to follow or naturally, they'll be punished (or humiliated as we learned in this video).
Whether you chose to wear dresses, skirts or other stylish clothing, a lot of times you'll find people reporting you, maybe out of jealousy or because they were born on an Amish farm. Either way, teen or not, you should have the right to wear whatever you like so long as you're not exposing anything you can't see in a PG film.
Think about that for a second, many schools won't allow you to wear clothing that could be seen in a PG film (you know, movies little kids can watch). Their high school dress code violation system seems to be totally unreasonable.

Hi, I'm Maggie. I'm a sixteen year-old writer and filmmaker. I made this documentary for a filmmaking class project, but I also just really wanted to show the reality of the WCHS dress code and all other school dress codes. I think that there needs to be an open discussion when it comes to the issues presented in this film, and I think that by showing how the dress code affects real high schoolers, it could open the door for the amendment or abolition of the dress code.

Dress codes are written and, more often, unwritten rules with regard to clothing. Clothing like other aspects of human physical appearance has a social significance, with different rules and expectations being valid depending on circumstance and occasion. Even within a single day an individual may need to navigate between two or more dress codes, at a minimum these are those that apply at their place of work and those at home, usually this ability is a result of cultural acclimatization. Different societies and cultures will have different dress norms although Western styles are commonly accepted as valid.
The dress code has built in rules or signals indicating the message being given by a person's clothing and how it is worn. This message may include indications of the person's gender, income, occupation and social class, political, ethnic and religious affiliation, attitude and attitude towards comfort, fashion, traditions, gender expression, marital status, sexual availability and sexual orientation, etc. Clothes convey other social messages including the stating or claiming personal or cultural identity, the establishing, maintaining, or defying social group norms, and appreciating comfort and functionality.

The dress codes at high school, even college at times, can be pretty far out there. Parents and teachers are much more sensitive to teenagers fashion choices and because they have certain legal authority, especially parents, they enforce a dress code violation system for the teens to follow or naturally, they'll be punished (or humiliated as we learned in this video). Whether you chose to wear dresses, skirts or other stylish clothing, a lot of times you'll find people reporting you, maybe out of jealousy or because they were born on an Amish farm. Hi, I'm Maggie. I'm a sixteen year-old writer and filmmaker. I made this documentary for a filmmaking class project, but I also just really wanted to show the reality of the WCHS dress code and all other school dress codes. I think that there needs to be an open discussion when it comes to the issues presented in this film, and I think that by showing how the dress code affects real high schoolers, it could open the door for the amendment or abolition of the dress code. The dress codes at high school, even college at times, can be pretty far out there. Parents and teachers are much more sensitive to teenagers fashion choices and because they have certain legal authority, especially parents, they enforce a dress code violation system for the teens to follow or naturally, they'll be punished (or humiliated as we learned in this video).
Whether you chose to wear dresses, skirts or other stylish clothing, a lot of times you'll find people reporting you, maybe out of jealousy or because they were born on an Amish farm. Either way, teen or not, you should have the right to wear whatever you like so long as you're not exposing anything you can't see in a PG film.
Think about that for a second, many schools won't allow you to wear clothing that could be seen in a PG film (you know, movies little kids can watch). Their high school dress code violation system seems to be totally unreasonable.
