Another day risking life and limb driving along Route One in West Marin - motorcycyle menace continues
This 7 minute video was recorded on 9 October 2016 as I drove south along route one from Nick's to the Point Reyes Station Sheriff's Office. Five occurrences of unsafe passing may be seen firsthand. Regretfully I missed possibly the most egregious incident as a motorcyclust popped a wheelie and pass numerous cars while passing The Marshall Store.

Saw the beautiful skies as I left work. Grabbed my Canon XT, quickly drove out Lucas Valley Road and hiked the fire trail from Big Rock up to Loma Alta. I had never been up there.
I adjusted the exposure a little while shooting this time lapse. About 5 adjustments of 1/3 stop each. It's really hard to smooth out luminance and contrast using key frames in post.

West Marin
West Marin is the largest rural region of Marin County, California.
The West Marin Chamber of Commerce includes seven unincorporated communities in its definition of West Marin: Point Reyes Station, Olema, Stinson Beach, Bolinas, Tomales, Dillon Beach, and Inverness. West Marin is generally considered to be west of Muir Beach and Nicasio on the Pacific Ocean side of Mount Tamalpais.
The Point Reyes Light is a weekly newspaper covering West Marin, and the website of the Marin Independent Journal has a category for West Marin news.
Unlike the rest of the county, which is served by Golden Gate Transit, West Marin is served by Marin Transit, which connects to Golden Gate Transit lines at Marin City and in the San Geronimo Valley.
The Environmental Action Committee of West Marin, active since the 1970s, focuses on environmental issues such as preserving open space and protecting vulnerable species.
The Straus Family Creamery is just north of Marshall.

Burning Man
Burning Man is an annual gathering that takes place at Black Rock City—a temporary community erected in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. The event is described as an experiment in community and art, influenced by 10 main principles, including "radical" inclusion, self-reliance and self-expression, as well as community cooperation, gifting and decommodification, and leaving no trace. First held in 1986 on Baker Beach in San Francisco as a small function organized by Larry Harvey and a group of friends, it has since been held annually, spanning from the last Sunday in August to the first Monday in September (the U.S. Labor Day); for example, Burning Man 2015 took place August 30 – September 7, 2015.
At Burning Man the community explores various forms of artistic self-expression, created in celebration for the pleasure of all participants. Participation is a key precept for the community – selfless giving of one's unique talents for the enjoyment of all is encouraged and actively reinforced. Some of these generous out-pourings of creativity can include experimental and interactive sculpture, building, performance, and art cars among other mediums, often inspired by the yearly theme, chosen by organizers. The event takes its name from its culmination, the symbollic, ritual burning of a large wooden effigy ("the Man") that traditionally occurs on the Saturday evening of the event.

Film festival

Marin County, California
Marin County /məˈrɪn/ is a county located in the North San Francisco Bay Area of the State of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 252,409. Its county seat is San Rafael.
Marin County is included in the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.
Marin County is well known for its natural beauty, liberal politics, and affluence. In May 2009, Marin County had the fifth highest income per capita in the United States at about $91,480. The county is governed by the Marin County Board of Supervisors.
San Quentin Prison is located in the county, as is George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch. Autodesk, the publisher of AutoCAD, is also located there, as well as numerous other high-tech companies.
The Marin County Civic Center was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and draws thousands of visitors a year to guided tours of its arch and atrium design. In 1994, a new county jail facility was embedded into the hillside nearby. Marin County's natural sites include the Muir Woods redwood forest, the Marin Headlands, Stinson Beach, the Point Reyes National Seashore, and Mount Tamalpais.

Geography of Hope Film Festival REFLECTIONS ON WATER

This 7 minute video was recorded on 9 October 2016 as I drove south along route one from Nick's to the Point Reyes Station Sheriff's Office. Five occurrences of unsafe passing may be seen firsthand. Regretfully I missed possibly the most egregious incident as a motorcyclust popped a wheelie and pass numerous cars while passing The Marshall Store.

Saw the beautiful skies as I left work. Grabbed my Canon XT, quickly drove out Lucas Valley Road and hiked the fire trail from Big Rock up to Loma Alta. I had never been up there.
I adjusted the exposure a little while shooting this time lapse. About 5 adjustments of 1/3 stop each. It's really hard to smooth out luminance and contrast using key frames in post.

The Geography of Hope Conference celebrating “Reflections on Water” will take place in early 2011 in Point Reyes Station. The event includes literary conversations, public art installations, a film festival, and field trips to farms, wetlands, and wilderness areas in the surrounding countryside. Meals prepared with Marin’s most delicious farm products will be served at two dinners at Toby’s Feed Barn during the conference.
The Geography of Hope Conference (March 19–20) is chaired by award-winning poets Robert Hass and Brenda Hillman. It also features a host of other established and emerging writers who will participate in lively panels and more intimate lunchtime conversations with participants.
Two new and unique art exhibitions will be part of the 2011 conference. Outdoor public art projects will be installed at selected sites in Point Reyes Station. On display for three months, they will be viewed by thousands of visitors to West Marin. A group show at Toby’s Gallery will showcase the work of artists in a variety of media exploring the nature and notions of water.
Also new this year is a companion film festival (February 25–27) which precedes the conference and promises to be a fascinating and lively introduction to the subject of “Reflections on Water.” Filmmakers may submit films until December 17, 2010, to withoutabox.com.
Founded in 2008, the Geography of Hope Conference has quickly become of Northern California’s most exceptional literary and arts events. It takes its name from Wallace Stegner’s famous “Wilderness Letter” in which he described wild landscapes as part of our “geography of hope.” Located in western Marin County where many of Stegner’s land conservation visions have come to fruition, the conference explores the relationship between people and the landscape through the voices of authors, environmentalists, farmers, artists, and filmmakers.

Robert Hass, Conference Co-chair, was Poet Laureate of the United States from 1995–1997. He has written numerous volumes of poetry, including most recently The Apple Trees at Olema: New and Selected Poems (2010). Hass has translated the poetry of Czeslaw Milosz as well as the work of other poets and essayists. He is an inspiring writing teacher and a professor at the University of California at Berkeley.
Poet Brenda Hillman, Conference Co-chair, is the author of Practical Water (2010) as well as seven other volumes of poetry. Her work has been called “eclectic, mercurial, sensuous, and luminescent.” She has received awards and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Society of America, along with a Bay Area Book Reviewer's Award, a Pushcart Prize, and the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award.
John E. Mueller, Outdoor Public Arts Curator & Film Festival Producer, is a mediator and lawyer and served as the Advisory Council Liason and consultant to the Santa Cruz Film Festival from 2004–2009. He has been a member of the Black Rock Arts Foundation Board of Directors since 2004 and served on the Board of Bread and Roses for 7 years, chairing it for 2 years. As a member of David Best's Temple Crew he has helped build temples at Burning Man; Stradbally, Ireland; Detroit and San Francisco. He has created art at Burning Man and performed at the 2009 Venice Biennale.
Mariah Nielson, BArch, California College of the Arts, Toby’s Gallery Group Show Curator, has built a career working with regional, national, and international emerging and established artists. She has worked at the Oakland Museum of California and now serves as curator of the San Francisco Museum of Craft+Design. As Director of the Estate of her late father, the sculptor J.B. Blunk, Ms. Nielson acts as curator, registrar, and archivist and is responsible for coordinating all exhibition loans and sales of Blunk’s work. In 2007, under the auspices of the Lucid Art Foundation, she established the J.B. Blunk Artist Residency program in the home and studio of her father in Inverness, California.
Jane Sullivan, GOH Film Festival Director, the Founder of and Executive Director of the Santa Cruz Film Festival from 2002¬–2009, she has consulted with film festivals including the Naval Postgraduate School’s Windows On The World Film and Educational Symposium, (Monterey, CA), San Francisco 24 Hour Film Race and The Mile High Horror Film Festival, (Denver CO). She has worked for The American Institute of Architects, SF Chapter; SF MOMA Lecture Series; Advertising Photographers of New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Barwood Productions, Gordon Parks, David Best, and directed and performed in Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens’ “The Blue Wedding” in The Society of Fear (The Spanish Pavillion) at The Venice Biennale.

After a morning of reflection in the park, head over to the Swan Bell Tower to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Don’t forget your camera! You will notice the diverse nature of Perth’s architecture from this vantage point, including the modern glass structures and London-inspired Tudor buildings.
Perth tours are never complete without a ferry ride to Rottnest Island, affectionately called “Rotto” by the locals. This getaway is rife with opportunities to snorkel in the Indian Ocean, see wildlife such as seals and birds, and travel across more than 31 miles of cycle ways on a rented bicycle.
Once your feet are back on mainland Western Australia, visit one of the jewels, and ultimately what draws much of the Perth tourism: Swan Valley. This region has a landscape peppered with vineyards, no surprise given that growing grapes has been a long-standing tradition in Swan Valley. Following a short (or leisurely paced) day trip to Swan Valley, return to Perth and head to Hillarys Boat Harbour for a sunset dinner.

Saw the beautiful skies as I left work. Grabbed my Canon XT, quickly drove out Lucas Valley Road and hiked the fire trail from Big Rock up to Loma Alta. I had never been up there. I adjusted the exposure a little while shooting this time lapse. About 5 adjustments of 1/3 stop each. It's really hard to smooth out luminance and contrast using key frames in post.

Saw the beautiful skies as I left work. Grabbed my Canon XT, quickly drove out Lucas Valley Road and hiked the fire trail from Big Rock up to Loma Alta. I had never been up there.
I adjusted the exposure a little while shooting this time lapse. About 5 adjustments of 1/3 stop each. It's really hard to smooth out luminance and contrast using key frames in post.

The Geography of Hope Conference celebrating “Reflections on Water” will take place in early 2011 in Point Reyes Station. The event includes literary conversations, public art installations, a film festival, and field trips to farms, wetlands, and wilderness areas in the surrounding countryside. Meals prepared with Marin’s most delicious farm products will be served at two dinners at Toby’s Feed Barn during the conference.
The Geography of Hope Conference (March 19–20) is chaired by award-winning poets Robert Hass and Brenda Hillman. It also features a host of other established and emerging writers who will participate in lively panels and more intimate lunchtime conversations with participants.
Two new and unique art exhibitions will be part of the 2011 conference. Outdoor public art projects will be installed at selected sites in Point Reyes Station. On display for three months, they will be viewed by thousands of visitors to West Marin. A group show at Toby’s Gallery will showcase the work of artists in a variety of media exploring the nature and notions of water.
Also new this year is a companion film festival (February 25–27) which precedes the conference and promises to be a fascinating and lively introduction to the subject of “Reflections on Water.” Filmmakers may submit films until December 17, 2010, to withoutabox.com.
Founded in 2008, the Geography of Hope Conference has quickly become of Northern California’s most exceptional literary and arts events. It takes its name from Wallace Stegner’s famous “Wilderness Letter” in which he described wild landscapes as part of our “geography of hope.” Located in western Marin County where many of Stegner’s land conservation visions have come to fruition, the conference explores the relationship between people and the landscape through the voices of authors, environmentalists, farmers, artists, and filmmakers.

Robert Hass, Conference Co-chair, was Poet Laureate of the United States from 1995–1997. He has written numerous volumes of poetry, including most recently The Apple Trees at Olema: New and Selected Poems (2010). Hass has translated the poetry of Czeslaw Milosz as well as the work of other poets and essayists. He is an inspiring writing teacher and a professor at the University of California at Berkeley.
Poet Brenda Hillman, Conference Co-chair, is the author of Practical Water (2010) as well as seven other volumes of poetry. Her work has been called “eclectic, mercurial, sensuous, and luminescent.” She has received awards and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Society of America, along with a Bay Area Book Reviewer's Award, a Pushcart Prize, and the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award.
John E. Mueller, Outdoor Public Arts Curator & Film Festival Producer, is a mediator and lawyer and served as the Advisory Council Liason and consultant to the Santa Cruz Film Festival from 2004–2009. He has been a member of the Black Rock Arts Foundation Board of Directors since 2004 and served on the Board of Bread and Roses for 7 years, chairing it for 2 years. As a member of David Best's Temple Crew he has helped build temples at Burning Man; Stradbally, Ireland; Detroit and San Francisco. He has created art at Burning Man and performed at the 2009 Venice Biennale.
Mariah Nielson, BArch, California College of the Arts, Toby’s Gallery Group Show Curator, has built a career working with regional, national, and international emerging and established artists. She has worked at the Oakland Museum of California and now serves as curator of the San Francisco Museum of Craft+Design. As Director of the Estate of her late father, the sculptor J.B. Blunk, Ms. Nielson acts as curator, registrar, and archivist and is responsible for coordinating all exhibition loans and sales of Blunk’s work. In 2007, under the auspices of the Lucid Art Foundation, she established the J.B. Blunk Artist Residency program in the home and studio of her father in Inverness, California.
Jane Sullivan, GOH Film Festival Director, the Founder of and Executive Director of the Santa Cruz Film Festival from 2002¬–2009, she has consulted with film festivals including the Naval Postgraduate School’s Windows On The World Film and Educational Symposium, (Monterey, CA), San Francisco 24 Hour Film Race and The Mile High Horror Film Festival, (Denver CO). She has worked for The American Institute of Architects, SF Chapter; SF MOMA Lecture Series; Advertising Photographers of New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Barwood Productions, Gordon Parks, David Best, and directed and performed in Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens’ “The Blue Wedding” in The Society of Fear (The Spanish Pavillion) at The Venice Biennale.

In some areas, visitor rentals outnumber homes. AirBnB and VRBO help property owners pay their expenses, but also hollow out communities. In 2013, tourism-related State and County tax revenue from Marin County as a whole was $65 million. John Hart, Environmental Historian and Author
Just a year after Drake’s Bay oyster farm was forced to shut down at Point Reyes National Seashore, a group of environmentalists have filed a lawsuit with a bigger and potentially more explosive target: the thousands of dairy and beef cattle in the park. Many of the cattle ranches have been operated by the same families since the 1860s. The suit against the National Park Service (NPS) has been filed by the Resource Renewal Institute of Mill Valley along with the Center for Biological Diversity and the Western Watersheds Project, based in Idaho. It claims the cattle are causing erosion, polluting waterways, harming endangered salmon and blocking public access. Currently, the NPS is moving forward with a plan to renew for 20 years the ranchers’ leases. The environmentalists claim the NPS is doing so without conducting adequate environmental studies. The ranchers say their operations are an integral part of our coastal history. They note that when developers were threatening to build subdivisions on the Point Reyes Peninsula in the 1950s, local ranching families formed an alliance with the Sierra Club and other environmental groups to convince Congress and President John F. Kennedy to establish the park in 1962. Come to hear both sides of the issue from two well-versed speakers.
Chance Cutrano directs land policy initiatives, media projects, and emerging ideas at the Resource Renewal Institute (RRI), a nonprofit located in Mill Valley. His current work focuses on the management of the Point Reyes National Seashore and agro-ecology programs in the Central Valley. He studied philosophy and political science at Saint Xavier University where he analyzed bison and elk management policy in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Prior to RRI, Chance was researching food, water, and energy management policy in Vietnam, Morocco, and Bolivia. He lives in Marin, studies Sustainable Management at Presidio Graduate School, and is an ardent hiker and photographer.
John Hart is an environmental historian, who began writing on the Marin scene in 1970, at a time when the foundations for present policies—and controversies—were being laid. Four of the sixteen books he has written since relate to local landscapes. Relevant today are “An Island in Time: 50 Years of Point Reyes National Seashore” and “Farming on the Edge: Saving Family Farms in Marin County, California “. John has won the Commonwealth Club’s Medal in California, the Bay Institute’s Carla Bard Bay Education Award, the American Alpine Club’s David R. Brower Award for Outstanding Service in the Field of Conservation. John has a BA in German and Comparative Literature from Princeton University.
