Human factors and ergonomics (HF&E), also known as comfort design, functional design, and systems, is the practice of designing products, systems, or processes to take proper account of the interaction between them and the people who use them.
The field has seen contributions from numerous disciplines, such as psychology, engineering, biomechanics, industrial design, physiology, and anthropometry. In essence, it is the study of designing equipment and devices that fit the human body and its cognitive abilities. The two terms "human factors" and "ergonomics" are essentially synonymous.
The International Ergonomics Association defines ergonomics or human factors as follows:
HF&E is employed to fulfill the goals of occupational health and safety and productivity. It is relevant in the design of such things as safe furniture and easy-to-use interfaces to machines and equipment.
Proper ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries and other musculoskeletal disorders, which can develop over time and can lead to long-term disability.

FAA Description of the Human Factors that influence good performance in Airmen
This video is a brief compilation of Crucial Knowledge's six online courses covering Human Factors. The series includes "Introduction to Human Factors," "The Dirty Dozen," "Combating Complacency," "Case Studies," "Professionalism & Integrity" and "Safety Management Systems -- Organizational Factors." Each of these titles is also individually featured in other videos at our YouTube channel. How EASA and FAA Relate on the Human Factors Issue: While the FAA is expected to eventually issue Human Factors requirements, the European Aviation Safety Agency already has Human Factors requirements. Those in the United States should direct their attention to the "Maintenance Annex Guidance" (MAG) document released in November of 2011. Specific to human factors training requirements is Section B o...
As a result of his personal experience, Martin Bromiley founded the Clinical Human Factors Group in 2007. This group brings together experts, clinicians and enthusiasts who have an interest in placing the understanding of human factors at the heart of improving patient safety. In Just A Routine Operation Martin talks about his experience of losing his wife during an apparently routine procedure and his hopes for making a change to practice in healthcare. This film was produced by thinkpublic for the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement

This video is based on an actual fatal accident involving a DC8 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The "Dirty Dozen" are illustrated as the primary causes of the maintenance error in judgement that leads to the fatal accident.
Hello everyone! My name is Camila Betker and I am a student of Psychology. In this channel I'm going to talk about topics related to human factors; how to identify, train and assess them. I invite you to be skeptical and post any questions or criticism you may have. The books I'm going to use are: - Safety at the Sharp End (Rhona Flin, Paul O'Connor and Margaret Crichton); - Human Factors on the Flight Deck (Hans-Joachim Ebermann and Joachim Scheiderer); and - Practical Human Factors for Pilots (David Moriarty).
This tutorial provides an overview of Human Builder functionality. It provides a step-by-step scenario showing you how to use key functions. The tasks described in this section are: Human Builder is based on a best-in-class human modeling system which, for many years, has permitted detailed investigation into human-centered design issues in the context of a workplace before it physically exists. Human Builder provides very accurate simulation of humans and their interactions with products to ensure they will operate naturally in a workplace tailored to their tasks. The Human Builder product specifically focuses on creating and manipulating digital humans for "first level" human-product interaction analysis. Human Builder consists of a number of advanced tools for creating, manipulating and...

Google Tech Talk December 16, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Jason H. Wong. Our brains are not as reliable as we would like to think. Human factors is the science of understanding human cognition and designing systems to work within its limitations. A lot of time and effort has gone into understanding how our brains work (and when they don't). However, we continue to make fundamental design errors that not only go against cognitive science principles but common sense as well. This talk will explore some of the quirkier aspects of our cognition, from visual attention to memory and decision making. There will be copious examples of design gone wrong along with discussions of how to understand how we think and how to avoid making design mistakes in the future. Dr. Jason H. Wong is a Human Fac...
