FAA Description of the Human Factors that influence good performance in Airmen
This video is a brief compilation of Crucial Knowledge's six online courses covering Human Factors. The series includes "Introduction to Human Factors," "The Dirty Dozen," "Combating Complacency," "Case Studies," "Professionalism & Integrity" and "Safety Management Systems -- Organizational Factors." Each of these titles is also individually featured in other videos at our YouTube channel.
How EASA and FAA Relate on the Human Factors Issue:
While the FAA is expected to eventually issue Human Factors requirements, the European Aviation Safety Agency already has Human Factors requirements. Those in the United States should direct their attention to the "Maintenance Annex Guidance" (MAG) document released in November of 2011. Specific to human factors training requirements is Section B of Appendix 1 (for U.S.-based Repair Stations), clause 17 (see page 98 of that document). This document is accessible from the Crucial Knowledge web page. Click on the "Human Factors" button.

Human factors and ergonomics
Human factors and ergonomics (HF&E), also known as comfort design, functional design, and systems, is the practice of designing products, systems, or processes to take proper account of the interaction between them and the people who use them.
The field has seen contributions from numerous disciplines, such as psychology, engineering, biomechanics, industrial design, physiology, and anthropometry. In essence, it is the study of designing equipment and devices that fit the human body and its cognitive abilities. The two terms "human factors" and "ergonomics" are essentially synonymous.
The International Ergonomics Association defines ergonomics or human factors as follows:
HF&E is employed to fulfill the goals of occupational health and safety and productivity. It is relevant in the design of such things as safe furniture and easy-to-use interfaces to machines and equipment.
Proper ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries and other musculoskeletal disorders, which can develop over time and can lead to long-term disability.

ABSTRACT
Presented by Jason H. Wong.
Our brains are not as reliable as we would like to think. Human factors is the science of understanding human cognition and designing systems to work within its limitations. A lot of time and effort has gone into understanding how our brains work (and when they don't). However, we continue to make fundamental design errors that not only go against cognitive science principles but common sense as well. This talk will explore some of the quirkier aspects of our cognition, from visual attention to memory and decision making. There will be copious examples of design gone wrong along with discussions of how to understand how we think and how to avoid making design mistakes in the future.
Dr. Jason H. Wong is a Human Factors Scientist with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC). He received his Ph.D. in 2009 from George Mason University in Human Factors and Applied Cognition, where he conducted research on visual attention and working memory. He was awarded the Department of Defense SMART Scholarship in 2007. This paved the way for his work at NUWC, where Dr. Wong examines the human-computer interaction aspects of complex systems, develops efficient submariner training methodologies, and creates cognitive models to simulate human performance.
