History of Canon Law
This lecture introduces canon law. Although primarily meant for theological purposes or the control of the Church over its jurisdiction, canon law is significant in the history of Western legal and political developments, not only in a historical perspective but also, as Carl Schmitt argues, in shaping the legal structure of modern nation states.

Tim Staples discusses how he would explain and defend Canon Law to Protestants.
Tim Staples is Director of Apologetics and Evangelization here at Catholic Answers, but he was not always Catholic. Tim was raised a Southern Baptist. Although he fell away from the faith of his childhood, Tim came back to faith in Christ during his late teen years through the witness of Christian televangelists. Soon after, Tim joined the Marine Corps.
During his four-year tour, he became involved in ministry with various Assemblies of God communities. Immediately after his tour of duty, Tim enrolled in Jimmy Swaggart Bible College and became a youth minister in an Assembly of God community. During his final year in the Marines, however, Tim met a Marine who really knew his faith and challenged Tim to study Catholicism from Catholic and historical sources. That encounter sparked a two-year search for the truth. Tim was determined to prove Catholicism wrong, but he ended up studying his way to the last place he thought he would ever end up: the Catholic Church!
He converted to Catholicism in 1988 and spent the following six years in formation for the priesthood, earning a degree in philosophy from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania. He then studied theology on a graduate level at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, for two years. Realizing that his calling was not to the priesthood, Tim left the seminary in 1994 and has been working in Catholic apologetics and evangelization ever since.
If you are interested in booking Tim Staples for an upcoming event, please contact Catholic Answers at (619) 387-7200 or seminars@catholic.com.

The canon law of the Catholic Church (Ecclesiastical Latin: Jus Canonicum) is the system of laws and legal principles made and enforced by the hierarchical authorities of the Church to regulate its external organization and government and to order and direct the activities of Catholics toward the mission of the Church. It was the first modern Western legal system and is the oldest continuously functioning legal system in the West, while the unique traditions of Oriental canon law govern the 23 sui juris particular Eastern Catholic Churches.
Positive ecclesiastical laws, based directly or indirectly upon immutable divine law or natural law, derive formal authority in the case of universal laws from promulgation by the supreme legislator—the Supreme Pontiff)—who possesses the totality of legislative, executive, and judicial power in his person, while particular laws derive formal authority from promulgation by a legislator inferior to the supreme legislator, whether an ordinary or a delegated legislator. The actual subject material of the canons is not just doctrinal or moral in nature, but all-encompassing of the human condition. It has all the ordinary elements of a mature legal system: laws, courts, lawyers, judges, a fully articulated legal code for the Latin Church as well as a code for the Eastern Catholic Churches, principles of legal interpretation, and coercive penalties. It lacks civilly-binding force in most secular jurisdictions. Those who are versed and skilled in canon law, and professors of canon law, are called canonists (or colloquially, "canon lawyers"). Canon law as a sacred science is called canonistics.
The jurisprudence of canon law is the complex of legal principles and traditions within which canon law operates, while the philosophy, theology, and fundamental theory of canon law are the areas of philosophical, theological, and legal scholarship dedicated to providing a theoretical basis for canon law as legal system and as true law.

Surname origins - Professor Turi King
To celebrate the International Day of families, learn about the categories of surnames and how they can tell you something about your family history.
Knowing the meaning of your surname, and other surnames in your family tree, gives you a wonderful glimpse into the past and tells you something about your ancestors. The use of hereditary surnames was brought to Britain by the Normans who had already been using them for a couple of generations. Before this, people who had what we would think of as a surname didn’t pass them down through the generations. They were known as bynames and could even change in a...

Royal Family last name: What is the Royal Family’s surname?
The Royal Family are not often referred to using their surname, and people often ask whether members of the Royal Family even have a surname as they are easily identified without one. Before 1917, the British Royal family did not have a last name, however the Queen’s grandfather King George V officially adopted a surname in 1917.

To celebrate the International Day of families, learn about the categories of surnames and how they can tell you something about your family history.
Knowing the meaning of your surname, and other surnames in your family tree, gives you a wonderful glimpse into the past and tells you something about your ancestors. While there are various ways of classifying surnames, broadly speaking, they fall into five main categories: occupation, parental names, nicknames, location and feature of the landscape.
The use of hereditary surnames was brought to Britain by the Normans who had already been using them for a couple of generations. Before this, people who had what we would think of as a surname didn’t pass them down through the generations. They were known as bynames and could even change in a person’s lifetime.
Hereditary surnames were first used by the wealthy land-owning families as a way of securing continuity of inheritance. The practice of using hereditary surnames then gradually filtered down to the rest of the population starting earlier in the south and moving northward until by 1500s, it was becoming rarer not to have a surname.
In Scotland and Wales, the picture is a bit different. In Scotland, clan names and local customs played a part.
In Wales, the practice of using a single hereditary surname didn’t start until later and was slow to be adopted widely.
The most common surname in Britain is Smith, and comes from the category of occupational names. In this case, an ancestor is most likely to have been the village blacksmith. This would have been a very important occupation in the village just as the local baker, the cooper, who made barrels, and the thatcher, who repaired roofs, would have been.
While Smith may be the most common surname in Britain, many of the most frequent surnames come from a parent’s name, usually the father. Your surname could be Thomas or Thompson, son of Thomas, or, Marriot or Molson both of which come from Mary. In Wales, their practice of using a father’s name has led to surnames such as Jones, Williams, and Davies becoming among the most frequent surnames in Britain today.
Two types of surname derive from a place where an ancestor may have lived. The first of these is from a specific location such as a village, town or estate. And the second is from a prominent feature of the landscape. Examples of well-known surnames that are based on location are Attenborough, Durham and Thornton and being named after a place was usually associated either with owning land there or having lived there and moving elsewhere.
Surnames such as Bridge or Bell, could indicate where your ancestor lived in the village or town whereas living next to a natural feature could give you a surname such as Wood, Hill or Brook.
My favourite type of surname comes from a nickname because it can tell you something really personal about an individual. Brown is the most common surname of this type and is thought to come from a person’s hair colour or complexion, whereas Giffard is thought to come from fat cheeks. Newman is a surname that’s thought to describe a newcomer to a town or village.
One thing to remember is that your surname can have more than one origin. My surname King could have come from someone who worked for the King or as a nickname for someone who merely behaved as if he was one!
So whatever your surname: Shepherd, Andrews, Ecclestone, Orchard or Swift, your surname contains within it a glimpse into the life of one of your ancestors.

The Clinical Legal Education Center provides high quality legal aid, free of charge to underprivileged individuals and groups, and at the same time educates the future generation of the Israeli legal elite to social responsibility as part of legal professionalism.
Society gains twice: disadvantaged people get valuable legal aid and are empowered while the legal community is enriched with knowledge, sensitivity and comprehension of the unique skills necessary to protect and further human rights.
A great advantage of the Clinics is that it avoids all bureaucracy, often a characteristic of organizations which offer help to the underprivileged. The students and lawyers provide their clients legal assistance throughout the process; from the first consultation until the final outcome. Emphasis...

Professor Martha Nussbaum, the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, delivers the 2011 Hal Wootten Lecture at UNSW.
About the lecture - "Not for Profit: Why Legal Education Needs the Humanities":
We are in the midst of a worldwide crisis in education in schools and universities. In virtually every nation, the humanities and arts are being eroded in favour of technical applied learning, geared to create short-term profit. These changes have not been well thought through. The humanities and arts are not "high culture", the domain of the elites. Rather, they provide abilities that are essential for responsible citizenship: the ability to think for oneself, deferring neither to tradition nor to authority; to think like a "citizen of the world", understanding global problems in a nuanced manner; to cultivate an empathic imagination and see the world from the perspectives of many types of people. This crisis presents critical challenges for legal education and professional preparation, as the imperatives of profit undermine ethics and the role of law and the denigration of humanistic forms of learning erode the possibility for advancing key attributes of a democratic society.
About Professor Nussbaum:
Professor Martha Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago with appointments in the schools of law and divinity, as well as the philosophy department. A graduate from New York University and Harvard University, she has taught at Harvard, Wellesley College, and Brown University. Professor Nussbaum's recent publications include Creating Capabilities: The Human Development Approach (2011), Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities (2010), and From Disgust to Humanity: Sexual Orientation and Constitutional Law (2010).

This crisis presents critical challenges for legal education and professional preparation, as the imperatives of profit undermine ethics and the role of law and the denigration of humanistic forms of learning erode the possibility for advancing key attributes of a democratic society.

What can faculty and students do to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in law school? What principles define good pedagogical practice in legal education? How can principles of good practice be implemented in the law classroom?
These critical questions are the subject of this 29 minute, 23 second video and written materials. This resource was created for the Institute for Law School Teaching in 2001 by Gerry Hess (Gonzaga), Paula Lustbader (Seattle University), and Laurie Zimet (Hastings).
Interest in and literature about how to improve law school pedagogy have been increasing, especially given the changing demographics of law students. These written materials and the video were created to provoke reflection and generate discussion about how faculty and teaching methods affect today's students and their learning.
The accompanying written materials can be downloaded at: http://lawteaching.org/publications/videos/principlesforenhancing.php
The video features comments from students at seven law schools (Brooklyn, Gonzaga, Hastings, Iowa, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Seattle University). These schools were selected to provide a cross-section (geographic, public/private, demographic, size) of experiences in legal education. A coordinator from each institution selected students who varied in age, ethnicity, gender, learning styles, physical and learning disabilities, race, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, year in school, and class rank. All of the students were asked to respond to the following questions:
- What occurred in the classroom that interfered with your ability to learn?
- What occurred in the classroom that enhanced your learning?
The students' comments reflect a set of principles of good practice for contemporary higher education. The video and written materials apply the principles to legal education, explore their implications, and describe practical methods to implement them in the law school classroom. The principles, which are not ranked in order of importance, establish that effective learning environments:
- Promote student-faculty contact;
- Articulate clear, high expectations;
- Use time effectively;
- Respect differences among students;
- Foster cooperation;
- Provide prompt feedback; and
- Encourage active learning.
Principles for Enhancing Legal Education and the accompanying materials were produced in 2001 and copyright by Gerald Hess, Paula Lustbader, and Laurie Zimet. This program was made possible under a grant from the Institute for Law School Teaching at Gonzaga University School of Law and is uploaded with permission. This work is out of print and may not be reproduced or republished without permission.

Emphasis is placed on providing a high quality service to those of limited means in order to give them equal opportunities in relation to those who can afford the high prices of good legal services.
One third of the student body of the Law Faculty is active in the Law Clinics. In addition to six hours per week of practical work, students participate in weekly classes where they are taught the essential legal knowledge and tools necessary for clinical work in the field. These classes also provide a platform to discuss the social, cultural and ethical aspects of their work. In addition, the students gain further insights into their work through cooperation with professionals from other disciplines, such as community activists, social workers and physicians. The students are closely supervised by an experienced team of lawyers who operate the various clinics
