Empress Dowager Cixi took over the rule of mighty Imperial China in the late 19th century. After her son Tongzhi succeeded his father Emperor Xianfeng, she made herself custodian to the minor emperor on the dragon throne. During audiences she sat behind the curtains and determined what the Chinese ruler would "decide". Following her son's death she then placed her minor nephew Guanxu on the throne. But Cixi's reign was not easy, as the country suffered under oppression by imperial powers and uprisings of its unhappy people. "Ruling behind the curtain" (垂簾聽政) is how Empress Dowager Cixi rules over the Chinese empire. She seized power in 1861 and has since acted as the regent for several infant emperors. During an audience, the emperor sits on the throne, behind which Cixi sits, with a curtain separating them. Cixi is behind the curtain because a female cannot get involved in politics in a patriarchy like China. Despite that, Cixi is the de facto ruler of the country; the emperor is just a puppet. And now, Guangxu the boy emperor has grown up. He wants to rule the nation on his own. Conflicts between the emperor and the regent therefore begin.
In this clip, Cixi examines a concubine of the emperor who interferes with government affairs, because the law prohibits females from politics. Ironically, Cixi herself is ruling the country, which could also be considered a political activity.

After Empress Dowager Cixi, who has ruled China for almost a half century, retreats to the Summer Palace, her adopted son, Emperor Guangxu, launches a national reform in hope to better the Chinese empire. However, the reform is aimless and brings about chaos rather than prosperity. Some people then complain to Cixi, asking her to return to the government. Not wanting to become a puppet ruler again, Guangxu plots to detain Cixi, or to kill her if needed. He and his supporters intend to carry out their plan on the Moon Festival night. Like his reform, his coup is unsuccessful. Cixi then takes over the government once again and places Guangxu under house arrest. This event takes place in September 1898.

Notes: Concubine Zhen usually dresses as a boy. Her husband, Emperor Guangxu, then refers to her as "Zhen Ge" (珍哥), literally meaning "Elder Brother Zhen". But I find more appropriate to translate it as "[my] dearest boy" (when the emperor addresses her with this title). It should be noted also that "zhen" means dearly loved, highly valuable, precious, etc.

Empress dowager (also Dowager Empress or Empress mother) (Chinese: 皇太后; Chinese pinyin: Húang Tài Hòu, Korean pronunciation: Hwang Tae Hu, Japanese pronunciation: Kōtaigō, Vietnamese pronunciation: Hoàng Thái Hậu) was the title given to the mother of a Chinese, Korean, Japanese or Vietnamese emperor.
The title was also given occasionally to another woman of the same generation, while a woman from the previous generation was sometimes given the title of Grand empress dowager. Numerous empress dowagers held regency during the reign of an underage emperor. Many of the most prominent empress dowagers also extended their control for long periods after the emperor was old enough to govern. This was a source of political turmoil according to the traditional view of Chinese history.
The title Dowager Empress was given to the wife of a deceased Emperor of Russia, or of the Holy Roman Emperor.
Queen-Empress Victoria was widowed in 1861, before her accession as Queen-Empress of India. Her son, her grandson and her great-grandson all died before their wives, and their widows were known as empresses dowager in this Indian context. Had George VI, the last Emperor of India, died before the independence of India was proclaimed in 1947, his widow would have been known as the dowager empress of India. However, George VI did not die until 1952, some years after India's formal independence and the renunciation of the title Emperor of India by the British monarch (which took place formally in 1948).

The Concubine is a deathcore band from Tabernacle Township, New Jersey. Formed in 2003, they have since toured with Knife the Glitter, Veil of Maya, Left to Vanish and other similar bands, and have been hailed on metal blogs as an up-and-coming metal band.
The group made their recording debut with a 2004 EP, Maestro, If You Will. Their first full-length album, Abaddon, received mixed reviews.
According to the band's Myspace, The Concubine has disbanded, citing "other interests and careers" as the reason for the break-up.

Empress Dowager Cixi was effectively the ruler of the Great Qing Empire from 1861 to 1908. A daughter of the Manchu Yehe Nara Clan, was began as the concubine of Emperor Xianfeng and rose to prominence when her son succeeded him as Emperor Tongzhi during whose minority she took power from the regents. In 1875 she put her nephew Emperor Guangxu on the throne but continued to dominate affairs. She presided over the disastrous defeat in the Boxer Rebellion and after years of hesitation began to enact political reforms along with the modernization program she had enacted long before. It was insufficient to save the dynasty but she lived long enough to choose her nephew, Aisin-Gioro Pu-Yi, to become the last Emperor of China. -

Empress Dowager Cixi (Chinese: 慈禧太后; pinyin: Cíxǐ Tàihòu; Wade-Giles: Tz'u-Hsi T'ai-hou) (29 November 1835 -- 15 November 1908), of the Manchu Yehe Nara Clan, was a powerful and charismatic figure who became the de facto ruler of the Manchu Qing Dynasty in China for 47 years from 1861 to her death in 1908. Cixi then consolidated control and established near-absolute rule over the dynasty. She installed her nephew as the Guangxu Emperor in 1875. A conservative ruler who refused to adopt Western models of government, Cixi rejected reformist views and placed Guangxu under house arrest in later years for supporting reformers. However, after a humiliating clash with the Eight-Nation Alliance, external and internal pressures led Cixi to attempt institutional changes and appoint reform-minded officials. Ultimately, the Qing Dynasty collapsed a few years after her death.
