Shahr-e Sūkhté (Persian: شهر سوخته, meaning "[The] Burnt City"), also spelled as Shahr-e Sukhteh and Shahr-i Shōkhta, is an archaeological site of a sizable Bronze Age urban settlement, associated with the Jiroft culture. It is located in Sistan and Baluchistan Province, the southeastern part of Iran, on the bank of the Helmand River, near the Zahedan-Zabol road. In July 2014 it was placed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
The reasons for the unexpected rise and fall of the Burnt City are still wrapped in mystery. Artifacts recovered from the city demonstrate a peculiar incongruity with nearby civilizations of the time and it has been speculated that Shahr-e-Sookhteh might ultimately provide concrete evidence of a civilization east of prehistoric Persia that was independent of ancient Mesopotamia.
Covering an area of 151 hectares, Shahr-e Sukhteh was one of the world’s largest cities at the dawn of the urban era. In the western part of the site is a vast graveyard, measuring 25 hk.s. It contains between 25,000 to 40,000 ancient graves.
Burned or burnt may refer to:
A city is a large and permanent human settlement. Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town in general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law.
Cities generally have complex systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation. The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process, but it also presents challenges to managing urban growth.
A big city or metropolis usually has associated suburbs and exurbs. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban areas, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centers for employment. Once a city expands far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis. In terms of population, the largest city proper is Shanghai, while the fastest-growing is Dubai.
There is not enough evidence to assert what conditions gave rise to the first cities. Some theorists have speculated on what they consider suitable pre-conditions and basic mechanisms that might have been important driving forces.

Archeologists have unearthed several mysterious burials during a research project in the Iranian ancient site, Burnt City. The skeleton of 45-year-old man was found in the center of the circle-shaped grave and skulls of two dogs were also placed above his head. In addition, 12 human skulls were located on the north side of the grave, said the director of archaeological team Seyyed Mansour Sajjadi. From 1200 graves, which have been discovered in the Burnt City since 1975 during various archaeological excavations, the newly found burials have their unique style. “The grave may date back to a period before the advent of Zoroastrianism or it may belong to the people who were living in the region before the Iranian people settled in the area,” the project archaeologists say. BURNT CITY. ohbtt #3 NEW ALBUM one hour before the trip, a project that features musicians, engineers and visual artists, tries to combine the "indy" - as in independence - mentality and musical approach with the technical self-sufficiency in terms of equipment, facilities and manpower, that members of the project consider a vital prerequisite for the term "independence" to have any essential meaning. In an effort to be consistent with that concept, 'one hour before the trip' had built their own recording and rehearsal studio, following the "room in a room" trend in sound engineering, and have been trying to equip it adequately ever since. Furthermore, the band itself, took the initiative in trying to establish certain relationships with certain people - ranging from those with technical...

Quite frankly, Stephen Cipes is perhaps the most uniquely interesting Canadian we met in our entire trip. Imagine going all the way to Egypt to analyze the pyramids and re-creating them in the Okanagan Valley! And immediately start winning gold medals worldwide, including best sparkling wine in the world in France! Well, that's exactly what Stephen did. Summerhill Pyramid Winery is far more than just a winery, and Stephen Cipes is much more than just your regular wine proprietor. A visit to the Summerhill Pyramid Winery is an experience that runs much deeper than just satisfied taste buds (Summerhill's world class wine) and a happy tummy (Summerhill's organic bistro). It's an enlightening experience that empowers the soul and expands the mind. But it's not surprising when you arrive a...
Pyramid of Khafre Monuments of Ancient Egypt the pyramid of Khafre Chephren at Giza Khafre was a son of Khufu and his is the second largest known pyramid in Egypt, only approximately 10 feet shorter than the Great Pyramid. Remnants of its original casing are still apparent at the top of the structure. After the accomplishment of the building of the Great Pyramid, King Khafre had a hard act to follow. Khafre rose to the occasion by building his pyramid on higher ground giving the illusion that his pyramid was taller. He also encased the lowest two courses in granite. The pyramid itself lacks the degree of precision that was present in the Great Pyramid. Its angle is slightly sharper and the four corners are not as well aligned to accurately meet the apex. Therefore it exhibits a slig...
Pyramid of Neferefre Egyptian Monuments The Ancient Egypt Site Abusir is a pyramid field on the west bank of the Nile to the north of Saqqara where many of the Dynasty V pharaohs chose to site their burial monuments. The Pyramid of Neferefre is at the southern end of the site. Neferefre (sometimes known as Raneferef) was the eldest son of Neferirkare and the fourth or fifth king of Dynasty V (depending where the shadowy king Sheseskare fits in). Neferefre came to the throne at a young age and had barely begun to construct his pyramid complex next to that of his father, when he died after a reign of only a few years, probably in his early 20s.Until excavations were begun by the Prague University Egyptology Institute in 1974 little was known of Neferefre. When his funerary temple on the eas...

Pyramid of Meidum Egypt Pyramids Memphis Tours The Meidum pyramid lies close to the entrance to el-Faiyum, about 50km south of Dashur on the western edge of the cultivated area where it becomes desert. The monument was originally ascribed to the king Huni, who ruled for around fourteen years at the end of Dynasty III – primarily because he had no other pyramid in his name. The current archaeological thought is that it was probably built by Snefru, Huni’s son and successor and the first king of Dynasty IV, although Huni may have laid the foundations. There is no record of Huni at all in the structure but Petrie found several blocks with grafitti giving the date of Snefru’s 17th year of reign. There is also a Dynasty XVIII grafitti naming Snefru in a passage and chamber of the mort...
Newgrange Stone Age Passage Tomb Boyne Valley Ireland Newgrange is the best known Irish passage tomb and dates to c.3,200BC. The large mound is approximately 80m in diameter and is surrounded at its base by a kerb of 97 stones. The most impressive of these stones is the highly decorated Entrance Stone. The flat-topped cairn is almost 0.5 hectares in extent. It is roughly circular and is estimated to weigh 200,000 tonnes in total. It is made up of water-rolled stones from the terraces of the River Boyne. Excavations showed that white quartz stones from quartz veins in Co Wicklow and round granite boulders from the Mourne and Carlingford areas were used to build the revetment wall above the kerb along the front or south side of the mound. The mound covers a single tomb, which consists of a l...
Pyramid of Teti Egypt Pyramids inside Teti is amazing Review of Pyramid The pyramid of Teti was constructed at North Saqqara on the only remaining spot, south of the 1st and 2nd Dynasty mastabas and to the northeast of the pyramid of Userkaf. By this time, the layout of the complex, both inside and outside, had become almost standardised, though the chapel in front of the entrance to the tomb is somewhat of a novelty. The pyramid had a stepped core with a smooth outer casing. Inside, a corridor descends from the north to a chamber. After this, a further, horizontal corridor passes by three portcullises before entering the antechamber, located beneath the apex of the pyramid. The walls of this chamber and of the burial chamber to the west and to the tripartite antechamer to the east are c...

This week on Chicago Beer Pass, Brad Chmielewski & Nik White are joined by John Saller, the head brewer at Burnt City Brewing. The guys dive into the story of Burnt City and how it rose from the ashes of Atlas Brewing at the end of 2015. Since this re-launch the brand seems even stronger and the beers are looking and tasting great. If you can make it to the BrewPub on Lincoln, do it. Otherwise make sure you pick up some cans, which should be available all over the Chicagoland area. One of the newest cans hitting the shelves is their Octoberfest which has a pretty awesome dinosaur on the can. Cheers & thanks for checking out Chicago Beer Pass.
