A board wargame is a wargame with a set playing surface or board, as opposed to being played on a computer or in a more free-form playing area as in miniatures games. The modern, commercial wargaming hobby (as distinct from military exercises, or war games) developed in the late 1954 following the publication and commercial success of Tactics, The board wargaming hobby continues to enjoy a sizeable following, with a number of game publishers and gaming conventions dedicated to the hobby both in the English-speaking world and further afield.
In the United States, commercial board wargames (often shortened to "wargames" for brevity) were popularized in the early 1970s. Elsewhere, notably Great Britain where miniatures had evolved its own commercial hobby, a smaller following developed. The genre is still known for a number of common game-play conventions (or game mechanics) that were developed early on.
The early history of board wargaming was dominated by The Avalon Hill Game Company, while other companies such as SPI also gained importance in the history of the genre.
Top Five is a 2014 American comedy film written and directed by Chris Rock. The film, which stars Rock, Rosario Dawson, and Gabrielle Union, was screened in the Special Presentations section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. The movie follows New York City comedian and film star Andre Allen (Rock), who has to confront his past and comedic career while doing an interview with journalist Chelsea Brown (Dawson). The film was released on December 12, 2014, by Paramount Pictures.
New York Times reporter Chelsea Brown is spending a day interviewing comedian and recovering alcoholic Andre Allen, star of the hit film franchise Hammy The Bear, about a cop in a bear suit. He is attempting a foray into serious films with Uprize, in which he portrays Haitian Revolution figure Dutty Boukman, and sensitive to criticism, particularly by Times critic James Nielson, whose previous reviews of Andre's work have been negative and insulting. As the interview begins in his limousine, Andre recalls his lowest point, when he was in Houston in 2003 and met Jazzy Dee, who supplied him with drugs, alcohol and women. Yet after Jazzy refused to pay the women, they contended they were raped, leading to Andre's arrest.
War Game or War Games may refer to:
A board game is a tabletop game that involves counters or pieces moved or placed on a pre-marked surface or "board", according to a set of rules. Games can be based on pure strategy, chance (e.g., rolling dice), or a mixture of the two, and usually have a goal that a player aims to achieve. Early board games represented a battle between two armies, and most modern board games are still based on defeating opposing players in terms of counters, winning position, or accrual of points (often expressed as in-game currency).
There are many varieties of board games. Their representation of real-life situations can range from having no inherent theme (e.g., checkers), to having a specific theme and narrative (e.g., Cluedo). Rules can range from the very simple (e.g., Tic-tac-toe), to those describing a game universe in great detail (e.g., Dungeons & Dragons) – although most of the latter are role-playing games where the board is secondary to the game, serving to help visualize the game scenario.

This series of lectures presents a course in development on the design of board war games. They correspond to my textbook Designing Wargames - Introduction now available at smashwords.com and Amazon Kindle. The target audience is students in Interactive Media, Game Development, and Computer Game Design, most of whom have never seen let alone played a board wargame. I discuss general properties of games, teach the play of three classic board wargames, and use those games as a skeleton on which to build discussions of various rules features. I have activated the Closed Caption voice to text converison for this video. I do not have the time needed to proofread the voice to text, so some of the conversions may be a bit odd. Voice to text conversion is still an emerging technology. Hopeful...

Based on my forthcoming book Designing Board Wargames -- Introduction, I offer an extended series of lectures on how to design a board wargame. This lecture covers general variables describing board wargames, such as size, complexity, and historicity. I have activated the Closed Caption voice to text converison for this video. I do not have the time needed to proofread the voice to text, so some of the conversions may be a bit odd. Voice to text conversion is still an emerging technology. My textbooks on game design, available electronically, may also be of some help.

I walk readers through several turns of play of the game Stalingrad, using a game taken from the pages of Stalingrad for Beginners. This is not a course lecture given in class, but a supplemental lecture to help students learn how to play a board wargame.
This lecture is the first of a series that discuss hex and counter board wargames, an alternative to the Eurogames that have filled much of the rest of the course. Note that lecture 19 was a three-hour lab session, playtesting student-designed games for the game design project.
This lecture begins a discussion of the play of Panzerblitz. There is no Lecture 15; Lecture 15 was a discussion session with students about their game projects.
The course is targeted in part for people who have never played a board wargame, because most computer game designers have never played a board wargame. I am starting to fix this deficiency by teaching, over several lectures, the game Stalingrad, which has straightforward rules and hence offers a framework on which students my hang additional approaches as they reach them.
This lecture covers play testing in the constraints of an academic board wargame design course, design of unit counters, and topics related to map gridding, e.g., distance distortion due to the grid.
