The phrase "peace for our time" was spoken on 30 September 1938 by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in his speech concerning the Munich Agreement and the Anglo-German Declaration. The phrase echoed Benjamin Disraeli, who upon returning from the Congress of Berlin in 1878 stated "I have returned from Germany with peace in our time." It is primarily remembered for its ironic value, as the German occupation of the Sudetenland began on the following day. Less than a year after the agreement, following continued aggression from Germany and its invasion of Poland, Europe was plunged into World War II.
It is often misquoted as "peace in our time", which had appeared long before in The Book of Common Prayer as "Give peace in our time, O Lord". It is unknown how deliberate Chamberlain's use of such a similar term was, but anyone of his background would be familiar with the original.
Chamberlain landed at Heston Aerodrome on 30 September 1938, and spoke to the crowds there:
The settlement of the Czechoslovakian problem, which has now been achieved is, in my view, only the prelude to a larger settlement in which all Europe may find peace. This morning I had another talk with the German Chancellor, Herr Hitler, and here is the paper which bears his name upon it as well as mine. Some of you, perhaps, have already heard what it contains but I would just like to read it to you: ' ... We regard the agreement signed last night and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again.'
Arthur Neville Chamberlain FRS (18 March 1869 – 9 November 1940) was a British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from May 1937 to May 1940. Chamberlain is best known for his appeasement foreign policy, and in particular for his signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938, conceding the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia to Germany. When Adolf Hitler continued his aggression by invading Poland, Britain declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939, and Chamberlain led Britain through the first eight months of the Second World War.
After working in business and local government and after a short spell as Director of National Service in 1916 and 1917, Chamberlain followed his father and older half-brother in becoming a Member of Parliament in the 1918 general election at age 49. He declined a junior ministerial position, remaining a backbencher until 1922. He was rapidly promoted in 1923 to Minister of Health and then Chancellor of the Exchequer. After a short Labour-led government, he returned as Minister of Health, introducing a range of reform measures from 1924 to 1929. He was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in the National Government in 1931.
Eddie Money (born Edward Joseph Mahoney, March 21, 1949 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American rock guitarist, saxophonist and singer-songwriter who found success in the 1970s and 1980s with a string of Top 40 hits and platinum albums. Rock impresario Bill Graham said of Money "Eddie Money has it all...Not only can he sing, write and play, but he is a natural performer."
Money originally followed his father's footsteps and became a police officer in the late 1960s. As his interest in music intensified, he eventually ended his law enforcement career in favor of becoming a full time musician. He moved to Berkeley, California and became a regular at area clubs, where he eventually got enough attention to secure a recording contract with Columbia Records. Later in the 1970s, he charted with singles such as "Baby Hold On" and "Two Tickets to Paradise". Money continued his successes and took advantage of the MTV music video scene in the early 1980s with his humorous narrative videos for "Shakin'" and "Think I'm in Love", but his career began to fail him after several unsuccessful releases in the mid-1980s, accompanied by his struggles with drug addiction.
Long road
Of premature decisions
Leaving me cold
With only good intentions
But its you, who
Takes my pain away
You know its you, who
Keeps me wide awake
You know it's you
It's you
This is Our Time to runaway
It's our time we don't have to stay here
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is Our Time, forget the past
It's our time we could make it last
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
Long day
Stopping me from saying what I want to say
I wish I could do better
But it's you, who
Know just what I mean
You know its you, who
See what can't be seen
You know it's you
It's you
This is Our Time to runaway
It's our time we don't have to stay here
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is Our Time, forget the past
It's our time we could make it last
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is the day we give our own lives away
And we won't do what they say, anymore (Oh oh oh)
We won't walk but we'll run
Until our freedom we've won
And we will know what this fight was for (Oh oh oh)
This is Our Time to runaway
It's our time we don't have to stay here
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is Our Time, forget the past
It's our time we could make it last
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is Our Time to runaway
It's our time we don't have to stay here
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is Our Time, forget the past
It's our time we could make it last
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
