Various recordings of shortwave radio oddities, numbers and noise stations. These mysterious broadcasts are found on shortwave bands and they are - or appear to be - with no definite purpose. These signals are said to actively haunt the airwaves after World War II at beginning of the Cold War. With the collapse of the Soviet Union many expect these stations to disappear overtime but radio monitors indicate these signals continue to exist with new ones surfacing every now and then along with stations that have operated for decades.
So what are they? There are many speculations what these numbers stations are; theories point to covert government-sponsored broadcasts for spies abroad, illegal activities such as drug trafficking, for various scientific research and undisclosed military operations. However, to this day, no organization, broadcaster or country ever admitted the use of these stations.

NPR's "Lost and Found Sound" radio feature, "The Shortwave Numbers Mystery," from May 26, 2000.
The phenomenon of so-called "number stations," mysterious shortwave radio broadcasts that seem to exist only to transmit spoken-word numbers, snippets of weird songs and enigmatic codes, is a genuine mystery.
Exactly who is broadcasting these transmissions and why is unknown. One theory holds that the transmissions are part of espionage efforts by the intelligence agencies of different countries, another, that they are the work of organized drug smugglers, while still another claims that they are actually communications between extraterrestrial space aliens! (One commentator on an Internet message board even referred to them as "the aural equivalent of crop circles").
The espionage theory seems to be the most plausible. Akin Fernandez, creator of The Conet Project CD, states that, "Shortwave numbers stations are a perfect method of anonymous, one way communication. Spies located anywhere in the world can be communicated to by their masters via small, locally available, and unmodified shortwave receivers. The encryption system used by numbers stations, known as a "one time pad" is unbreakable. Combine this with the fact that it is almost impossible to track down the message recipients once they are inserted into the enemy country, it becomes clear just how powerful the numbers station system is."While shortwave radio buffs have been aware of them for years, the number station phenomenon remains largely unheard of by the general public.

Shortwave radio refers to the upper MF (medium frequency) and all of the HF (high frequency) portion of the radio spectrum, between 1,800–30,000 kHz. Shortwave radio received its name because the wavelengths in this band are shorter than 200 m (1500 kHz) which marked the original upper limit of the medium frequency band first used for radio communications. The broadcast medium wave band now extends above the 200 m/1500 kHz limit, and the amateur radio 1.8 MHz – 2.0 MHz band (known as the "top band") is the lowest-frequency band considered to be 'shortwave'.
Initially thought to be useless, shortwave radio now has many applications where the behaviour of radio waves in the Earth's atmosphere makes long-range communication possible. Shortwave radio is used for broadcasting of voice and music, and long-distance communication to ships and aircraft, or to remote areas out of reach of wired communication or other radio services. Additionally, amateur radio on these frequencies can provide hobby, educational and emergency two-way communication.

My Realistic DX-160 Shortwave Radio Arrives
I take a trip back in time by purchasing a shortwave radio I dreamed of owning back in 1976! Notice the rapid fluctuation of signals on the S-Meter, this is due to a solar storm in progress! I have seen this many times and suspected it during the video but confirmed it afterwards while uploading the video by checking the solar reports. This is one way the high frequency bands can act during a solar storm. -

In this video, I briefly introduce some of the type of signals I hear on my high-frequency (shortwave) amateur radio. Some of them are voice transmissions, and some are data. This video is simply the initial teaser for many videos to come. And, it served as an experiment in my editing two video sources and a third audio source, using Adobe Premier CC 2014 software.

I take a trip back in time by purchasing a shortwave radio I dreamed of owning back in 1976!
Notice the rapid fluctuation of signals on the S-Meter, this is due to a solar storm in progress! I have seen this many times and suspected it during the video but confirmed it afterwards while uploading the video by checking the solar reports. This is one way the high frequency bands can act during a solar storm.
