Kalap is a small village located in upper Garhwal Himalayas, ~200 kms from the city of Dehradun in the state of Uttarakhand, India.
Description
Kalap is a tiny settlement lying forgotten in time in the upper Garhwal region of the northern state of Uttarakhand in India. Geographically, Kalap is proximate to the tri-junction of the borders of the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand with the Tibetan plateau. Situated at an altitude of 7,500 ft, the village is nestled among virgin pine and deodar forests, and overlooks the gorge cut open by the roaring River Supin.
The area around Kalap offers stunning natural beauty, including views of the snow-capped Bandarpunch range, it is also a land of legends. The entire Tons river valley is considered to be the birthplace of the Mahabharata, the Sankrit mythological epic. The two protagonists in the epic, the Pandava and Kaurava brothers, are said to have descended from this very valley, and the people living here still claim to trace their lineage to one of the two clans. The River Tons itself is considered to by some to be the mythical River Saraswati.
Not being connected to a road head and far from the major trekking trails in Uttarakhand, Kalap has remained untouched by mainstream tourism.
The people of Kalap will welcome you with the hospitality synonymous with hill people. They will share their stories with you and you will find that there is plenty to explore and discover among the community's legends and folklore. Balbhadra Singh Negi was second of the three sons of a poor peasant in village Haida Kholi, near Satpuli, Pauri Garhwal. With no education coupled with abject poverty, he made his way to Najibabad where he joined a caravan of the British returning from Nepal with raw recruits. They were marching to Abbotabad -- their Centre. Balbhadra joined them. He got enrolled & after an illustrious career, fighting in Peiwar Kotal, Charasia, Kandahar & Kabul, earning the IOM & OBI in the Second` Afghan War, he retired after serving as the ADC to the C-in-C Lord Roberts & later as the Viceroy's ADC at Calcutta. He was granted 1600 bighas of land in Ghosi Khatta at Kotdwar. When Garhwal Rifles was raised in 1887, his son Amar Singh was granted direct VCO; his uniform & sword was presented to him at his home in Kotdwar with instructions to join duty at Lansdowne. During the Burma War, Amar Singh was seriously wounded. His father received a telegram: "Your son seriously wounded." Balbhadra Singh Negi sent this reply: "If he is of any service to the Government, keep him, else shoot him." In the return mail he wrote to his son: "Don't worry. If you come out alive you will earn fame. If you die, you will still earn fame".
