ABOUT THE LECTURE:
At some point, these panelists suggest, the issue of defining consciousness may just disappear. Suggests Christof Koch: "Let's treat consciousness as an empirical problem to be tackled by the biological sciences."
Koch makes distinctions between different kinds of consciousness: sleep and its varied stages; awareness of sounds, sights and smells; levels of arousal. All these different states are properties "of complex adaptive networks with massive feedback shaped by natural selection." And there are many behaviors that occur without consciousness. "When we talk, we don't know what we're going to say," says Koch. His research has focused on finding "neural correlates of consciousness." In one experiment with patients whose brains were implanted with 100 electrodes, he flashed pictures of Jennifer Aniston and the Sydney Opera House. While the patients could not remember what they'd seen, neurons responded selectively to these images. Studies like this, with even more sensitive tools, may some day help develop an information-based theory of consciousness, Koch says.
Mental phenomena are nothing but phenomena of the physical brain, says Patricia Churchland. It's "an illusion of the brain" to think that we have a "nonphysical soul that does our feeling." But how the brain creates constructs of itself and things in the world remains a major puzzle. For instance, how does a brain "habitually represent goals, plans and projects -- things that don't yet exist?" And what about the huge amount of spontaneous activity in the brain that occurs while we're resting? We don't understand how the "organization of a motor response is achieved," nor how these responses are integrated across sensory systems together with memory. Churchland anticipates a fundamental shift in looking at the brain that will merge philosophical and neurobiological issues.
In his day, Alexander Shulgin explored consciousness through "the art of chemistry." He synthesized a version of mescaline and invented other psychedelic drugs, experimenting on himself, before the era of government and university regulations. "Each material had to be learned, as a new meeting.... The beauty of the final results, finding out what the effects were, was that you couldn't be wrong." If he reported visual enhancements, and recall of memories, his data was "always a winner," because it was mostly a matter of subjective experience. Shulgin rues the laws and propaganda against psychedelic drugs, because he believes these drugs would serve as a useful "probe to look at the function of mind."

C’est R. Gordon Wasson qui redécouvrit en 1927 l’utilisation rituelle des champignons magiques à Oaxaca en Amérique latine. En 1955, Wasson et Allan Richard furent les premiers Américains à assister à un rituel et à y manger des champignons. Les champignons furent pris sous la supervision de Maria Sabina, une guérisseuse Mazatec. Mais c’est la publication du livre de Wasson (Mushrooms, Russia, and History), en 1957, qui suscita l’intérêt du public pour ce type de rituel.
En 1938, le chimiste suisse Albert Hofmann synthétisa le LSD-25 et en 1943 en découvrit les effets psychédéliques. Il le distribua ensuite rapidement à des psychologues et psychiatres afin qu’ils en examinent le potentiel pour la compréhension et le traitement des désordres mentaux.
À partir des années cinquante, des écrivains et poètes tels Aldous Huxley, William Burroughs, Allan Ginsberg, Carlos Castanedas, et d’autres personnalités comme le Dr Timothy Leary et le Dr Richard Alpert firent pénétrer les psychédéliques dans les universités puis dans la culture populaire.
En 1966, le gouvernement des États-Unis, terrorisé par la puissante réaction déclenchée par les psychédéliques, rendit illégale la majorité d’entre eux. Il utilisa toutes les forces physiques, financières et politiques en son contrôle pour répandre la peur et discréditer les vertus des psychédéliques, et ce malgré les études démontrant leur potentiel positif et la relative sécurité reliée à leur utilisation. Cette répression entraina l’apparition du LSD et de ses cousins sur le marché noir. Les années suivantes virent quant à elles naître un mouvement psychédélique d’un dynamisme libérateur.
En 1967, ZAP COMIX fit connaître Richard Crumb, Robert Williams et Rick Griffin. Plusieurs peintres furent aussi influencés par les visions provoquées par les psychédéliques : Robert Venosa, Vali Myers, Victor Vassarelli et Pablo Amaringo, etc.
En 1968, une nouvelle génération s’éclate à Woodstock au son des Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Santana et plusieurs autres. Les Beatles se mettent au LSD avec Yellow Submarine et les Doors ouvrent les portes de la perception.
En contrepartie à ce renouveau artistique, pratiquement toutes les recherches scientifiques furent arrêtées. Le Dr John Lilly réorienta sa carrière pour approfondir ses recherches sur les dauphins et sur son invention – le caisson d’isolation. Le Dr Stanislav Grof, un des chercheurs les plus actifs dans l’étude du LSD, inventa la respiration holotropique, une technique permettant d’atteindre un état similaire à celui obtenu avec LSD. Un des seuls à conserver son permis pour produire des psychédéliques fut le Dr Alexander Shulgin, chimiste génial à qui l’on doit la redécouverte du MDMA et la création de plus de deux cents autres molécules psychédéliques. Il dut malgré tout garder clandestines les expérimentations de ses nouvelles inventions avec un groupe d’amis proches jusqu’au moment où, trop vieux pour ce type de recherches, il les mit par écrit avec sa femme Ann Shulgin dans leurs célèbres livres PHIKAL et THIKAL. Dans ces livres on peut aussi trouver les recettes des psychédéliques qu’il a inventé.

At some point, these panelists suggest, the issue of defining consciousness may just disappear. Suggests Christof Koch: "Let's treat consciousness as an empirical problem to be tackled by the biological sciences."
Koch makes distinctions between different kinds of consciousness: sleep and its varied stages; awareness of sounds, sights and smells; levels of arousal. All these different states are properties "of complex adaptive networks with massive feedback shaped by natural selection." And there are many behaviors that occur without consciousness. "When we talk, we don't know what we're going to say," says Koch. His research has focused on finding "neural correlates of consciousness." In one experiment with patients whose brains were implanted with 100 electrodes, he flashed pictures of Jennifer Aniston and the Sydney Opera House. While the patients could not remember what they'd seen, neurons responded selectively to these images. Studies like this, with even more sensitive tools, may some day help develop an information-based theory of consciousness, Koch says.
Mental phenomena are nothing but phenomena of the physical brain, says Patricia Churchland. It's "an illusion of the brain" to think that we have a "nonphysical soul that does our feeling." But how the brain creates constructs of itself and things in the world remains a major puzzle. For instance, how does a brain "habitually represent goals, plans and projects -- things that don't yet exist?" And what about the huge amount of spontaneous activity in the brain that occurs while we're resting? We don't understand how the "organization of a motor response is achieved," nor how these responses are integrated across sensory systems together with memory. Churchland anticipates a fundamental shift in looking at the brain that will merge philosophical and neurobiological issues.
In his day, Alexander Shulgin explored consciousness through "the art of chemistry." He synthesized a version of mescaline and invented other psychedelic drugs, experimenting on himself, before the era of government and university regulations. "Each material had to be learned, as a new meeting.... The beauty of the final results, finding out what the effects were, was that you couldn't be wrong." If he reported visual enhancements, and recall of memories, his data was "always a winner," because it was mostly a matter of subjective experience. Shulgin rues the laws and propaganda against psychedelic drugs, because he believes these drugs would serve as a useful "probe to look at the function of mind."

Dans cette vidéo je vous raconte la petite histoire des psychédéliques. De 3500 A.D. jusqu’à aujourd’hui, voilà qui promet d’être intéressant.
C’est R. Gordon Wasson qui redécouvrit en 1927 l’utilisation rituelle des champignons magiques à Oaxaca en Amérique latine. En 1955, Wasson et Allan Richard furent les premiers Américains à assister à un rituel et à y manger des champignons. Les champignons furent pris sous la supervision de Maria Sabina, une guérisseuse Mazatec. Mais c’est la publication du livre de Wasson (Mushrooms, Russia, and History), en 1957, qui suscita l’intérêt du public pour ce type de rituel.
En 1938, le chimiste suisse Albert Hofmann synthétisa le LSD-25 et en 1943 en découvrit les effets psychédéliques. Il le distribua ensuite rapidement à des psychologues et psychiatres afin qu’ils en examinent le potentiel pour la compréhension et le traitement des désordres mentaux.
À partir des années cinquante, des écrivains et poètes tels Aldous Huxley, William Burroughs, Allan Ginsberg, Carlos Castanedas, et d’autres personnalités comme le Dr Timothy Leary et le Dr Richard Alpert firent pénétrer les psychédéliques dans les universités puis dans la culture populaire.
En 1966, le gouvernement des États-Unis, terrorisé par la puissante réaction déclenchée par les psychédéliques, rendit illégale la majorité d’entre eux. Il utilisa toutes les forces physiques, financières et politiques en son contrôle pour répandre la peur et discréditer les vertus des psychédéliques, et ce malgré les études démontrant leur potentiel positif et la relative sécurité reliée à leur utilisation. Cette répression entraina l’apparition du LSD et de ses cousins sur le marché noir. Les années suivantes virent quant à elles naître un mouvement psychédélique d’un dynamisme libérateur.
En 1967, ZAP COMIX fit connaître Richard Crumb, Robert Williams et Rick Griffin. Plusieurs peintres furent aussi influencés par les visions provoquées par les psychédéliques : Robert Venosa, Vali Myers, Victor Vassarelli et Pablo Amaringo, etc.
En 1968, une nouvelle génération s’éclate à Woodstock au son des Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Santana et plusieurs autres. Les Beatles se mettent au LSD avec Yellow Submarine et les Doors ouvrent les portes de la perception.
En contrepartie à ce renouveau artistique, pratiquement toutes les recherches scientifiques furent arrêtées. Le Dr John Lilly réorienta sa carrière pour approfondir ses recherches sur les dauphins et sur son invention – le caisson d’isolation. Le Dr Stanislav Grof, un des chercheurs les plus actifs dans l’étude du LSD, inventa la respiration holotropique, une technique permettant d’atteindre un état similaire à celui obtenu avec LSD. Un des seuls à conserver son permis pour produire des psychédéliques fut le Dr Alexander Shulgin, chimiste génial à qui l’on doit la redécouverte du MDMA et la création de plus de deux cents autres molécules psychédéliques. Il dut malgré tout garder clandestines les expérimentations de ses nouvelles inventions avec un groupe d’amis proches jusqu’au moment où, trop vieux pour ce type de recherches, il les mit par écrit avec sa femme Ann Shulgin dans leurs célèbres livres PHIKAL et THIKAL. Dans ces livres on peut aussi trouver les recettes des psychédéliques qu’il a inventé.
