History:
East Harlem has a long history as being home to immigrant groups. In the late 19th century, as Harlem grew up, East Harlem became the local home to many Italian immigrants and became known as Italian Harlem. In the early 20th century a growing population of Puerto Rican immigrants began to make their homes in the neighborhood and by the end of World War II they had become the dominate population in East Harlem. As a result Italian Harlem became known as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio.
El Museo Del Barrio
The Museo del Barrio is a museum founded in 1969 by teachers, parents and community activists It was created as a place to feature all types of art from Latin America and the Caribbean. Furthermore, the museum offers classes and lessons about the arts of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Duke Ellington Circle
There is a statue of Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington at the corner of 110th Street & Fifth Avenue. It is the first monument in New York City dedicated to an African-American. Duke Ellington was a musician, composer, orchestra conductor and one of the most influential artists in the history of jazz music.
Tito Puente Way
Did you know that many famous musicians who contributed to the modern "Latin Jazz" style of music were born and raised in Spanish Harlem? One of them is Tito Puente, who was born in East Harlem in 1923. By playing piano, clarinet, drums and timbales, he was able to fuse mambo, jazz and afro-Cuban drumming and take it to a higher level.
Latin Music and Food
Spanish Harlem is known for its many musicians, like Eddie & Charlie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and many more. You can catch some live Latin music and delicious food at various venues in Harlem.
Patsy's Pizzeria
Some remnants of the Italian immigration are still visible in East Harlem. Patsy's Pizzeria was founded in 1933 by an Italian immigrant named Pasquale Lanceri. When it opened it was one of the first pizzerias in New York City that started selling pizza by the slice.
Rao's Restaurant
It opened in 1896 and is known for its Southern Italian cuisine and tomato sauce. The walls of this restaurant are covered with photos of celebrities who have dined here, including Jerry Lewis, Woody Allen, Muhammad Ali and many more.
All Saints Roman Catholic Church
The Church of All Saints was designed in 1892 by the same architect who designed St. Patrick's Cathedral, located at Fifth Avenue & 51st Street. It was built in Venetian Gothic style, with details in terra cotta, hand-carved pews and stained glass.

A civilian gassing his car at a gas station in East Harlem captures the moment when retired NYPD Lieutenant Thomas Barnes shot and killed Rudolph Wyatt after a botched pharmacy robbery. Wyatt was shot once in the cheek and once in the base of the skull after opening fire at NYPD officers who were approaching the pharmacy. Wyatt, a Bloods gang member with a lengthy rap sheet, was pronounced dead at the scene while his accomplice is still at large.

East 112th Street and Madison Avenue is one of the most dangerous corners in Manhattan, where three rival gangs operate out of their respective city project buildings just one block away from each other.
Twenty-four members from Air It Out, 20 members from the True Money Gang, and 19 from Whoadey, were indicted last month after a 3-and-a-half-year investigation conducted by the NYPD's Gang Division and the District Attorney's Violent Criminal Enterprise Unit. The DA's office said these three gangs were among Manhattan's most violent.
Between East 106th and 117th street just along Madison Avenue alone, The NYPD has documented four murders as well as 20 non-fatal shootings and eight more shots fired incidents related to the three warring gangs.
The East Harlem overhaul was part of a massive crackdown between March 15 and April 12, by the DA and NYPD, that saw 122 indictments handed out among 6 different Manhattan gangs. The charges ranged from conspiracy to commit murder to operating as a drug kingpin -- both of which carry possible life sentences if found guilty.

Harlem is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan, which since the 1920s has been a major African-American residential, cultural and business center. Originally a Dutch village, formally organized in 1658, it is named after the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands. Harlem was annexed to New York City in 1873.
Harlem has been defined by a series of boom-and-bust cycles, with significant ethnic shifts accompanying each cycle. Black residents began to arrive en masse in 1904, with numbers fed by the Great Migration. In the 1920s and 1930s, the neighborhood was the focus of the "Harlem Renaissance", an outpouring of artistic and professional works without precedent in the American black community. However, with job losses in the time of the Great Depression and the deindustrialization of New York City after World War II, rates of crime and poverty increased significantly.
New York's revival in the late 20th century has led to renewal in Harlem as well. By 1995, Harlem was experiencing social and economic gentrification. Though the percentage of residents who are black peaked in 1950, the area remains predominantly black.

East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem and El Barrio, is a section of Harlem in the northeastern part of the New York City borough of Manhattan. East Harlem is one of the largest predominantly Latino communities in New York City. It includes the area formerly known as Italian Harlem, in which the remnants of a once-large Italian community remain. However, since the 1950s it has been dominated by residents of Puerto Rican descent, sometimes called Nuyoricans, as well as large populations of other Latin Americans and African-Americans.
The neighborhood boundaries are Harlem River to the north, the East River to the east, East 96th Street to the south, and Fifth Avenue to the west. The neighborhood is part of Manhattan Community Board 11. East 116th Street from 5th Avenue east to its termination at the FDR Drive is the most notable business hub of East Harlem along with a minor business hub along Third Avenue between E 103rd Street and E 110th Streets. The area is patrolled by both the 23rd Precinct located at 162 East 102nd Street and the 25th Precinct located at 120 East 119th Street.[1]

63 Gang Members Indicted in East Harlem Overhaul
East 112th Street and Madison Avenue is one of the most dangerous corners in Manhattan, where three rival gangs operate out of their respective city project buildings just one block away from each other. Twenty-four members from Air It Out, 20 members from the True Money Gang, and 19 from Whoadey, were indicted last month after a 3-and-a-half-year investigation conducted by the NYPD's Gang Division and the District Attorney's Violent Criminal Enterprise Unit. The DA's office said these three gangs were among Manhattan's most violent. "They deserve to get shot" - Angry onlookers harass NYPD doing their jobs in East Harlem 23rd Precinct New York City police officers killed a man Thursday after he had broken up a fight between two other men, insisting on placing him in a chokehold and slamming his head to the pavement, piling on top of him as he gasped for air and as he continually told the cops he couldn't breathe. The entire incident was caught on video from a witness who kept telling the cops that the man had not committed a crime. But evidently, the cops suspected him of selling untaxed cigarettes, which apparently is a very serious crime in New York City. According to the New York Daily News: "I can't breathe! Pope Francis Visits School in East Harlem
Pope Francis, a descendant of Italian immigrants in Argentina, met with dozens of schoolchildren, many of them immigrants themselves, at Our Lady Queen of Angels School in East Harlem Friday afternoon. The pope, children, educational staff members, parents, and local officials delighted in the visit. Outside the school, children cheered and clapped for the pope, and posed for selfies with him. The Pope was visibly moved and excited by the reception he received. Inside, students sang a song for the pope and then presented him with various projects the children have been working on for weeks. Many of the projects reflected the pope's values on protecting the environment. -

East Harlem has a long history as being home to immigrant groups. In the late 19th century, as Harlem grew up, East Harlem became the local home to many Italian immigrants and became known as Italian Harlem. In the early 20th century a growing population of Puerto Rican immigrants began to make their homes in the neighborhood and by the end of World War II they had become the dominate population in East Harlem. As a result Italian Harlem became known as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio.
El Museo Del Barrio
The Museo del Barrio is a museum founded in 1969 by teachers, parents and community activists It was created as a place to feature all types of art from Latin America and the Caribbean. Furthermore, the museum offers classes and lessons about the arts of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Duke Ellington Circle
There is a statue of Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington at the corner of 110th Street & Fifth Avenue. It is the first monument in New York City dedicated to an African-American. Duke Ellington was a musician, composer, orchestra conductor and one of the most influential artists in the history of jazz music.
Tito Puente Way
Did you know that many famous musicians who contributed to the modern "Latin Jazz" style of music were born and raised in Spanish Harlem? One of them is Tito Puente, who was born in East Harlem in 1923. By playing piano, clarinet, drums and timbales, he was able to fuse mambo, jazz and afro-Cuban drumming and take it to a higher level.
Latin Music and Food
Spanish Harlem is known for its many musicians, like Eddie & Charlie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and many more. You can catch some live Latin music and delicious food at various venues in Harlem.
Patsy's Pizzeria
Some remnants of the Italian immigration are still visible in East Harlem. Patsy's Pizzeria was founded in 1933 by an Italian immigrant named Pasquale Lanceri. When it opened it was one of the first pizzerias in New York City that started selling pizza by the slice.
Rao's Restaurant
It opened in 1896 and is known for its Southern Italian cuisine and tomato sauce. The walls of this restaurant are covered with photos of celebrities who have dined here, including Jerry Lewis, Woody Allen, Muhammad Ali and many more.
All Saints Roman Catholic Church
The Church of All Saints was designed in 1892 by the same architect who designed St. Patrick's Cathedral, located at Fifth Avenue & 51st Street. It was built in Venetian Gothic style, with details in terra cotta, hand-carved pews and stained glass.

Twenty-four members from Air It Out, 20 members from the True Money Gang, and 19 from Whoadey, were indicted last month after a 3-and-a-half-year investigation conducted by the NYPD's Gang Division and the District Attorney's Violent Criminal Enterprise Unit. The DA's office said these three gangs were among Manhattan's most violent.
Between East 106th and 117th street just along Madison Avenue alone, The NYPD has documented four murders as well as 20 non-fatal shootings and eight more shots fired incidents related to the three warring gangs.
The East Harlem overhaul was part of a massive crackdown between March 15 and April 12, by the DA and NYPD, that saw 122 indictments handed out among 6 different Manhattan gangs. The charges ranged from conspiracy to commit murder to operating as a drug kingpin -- both of which carry possible life sentences if found guilty.

23rd Precinct
New York City police officers killed a man Thursday after he had broken up a fight between two other men, insisting on placing him in a chokehold and slamming his head to the pavement, piling on top of him as he gasped for air and as he continually told the cops he couldn't breathe.
The entire incident was caught on video from a witness who kept telling the cops that the man had not committed a crime.
But evidently, the cops suspected him of selling untaxed cigarettes, which apparently is a very serious crime in New York City.
According to the New York Daily News: "I can't breathe! I can't breathe!" Eric Garner, 43, repeatedly screamed after at least five NYPD officers took him down in front of a Tompkinsville beauty supply store when he resisted being handcuffed. Within moments Garner, a married father of six children with two grandchildren, ceased struggling and appeared to become unconscious as police called paramedics to the scene. An angry crowd gathered, some recording with smart phones. "When I kissed my husband this morning, I never thought it would be for the last time," Garner's wife, Esaw Gardner, told the Daily News. Police officials said Garner has a history of arrests for selling untaxed cigarettes. They did not immediately say why officers were at the scene when he drew their attention. An NYPD spokesman would only say the man "was being placed in custody, went into cardiac arrest and died" at Richmond University Medical Center.
Although police are not saying what led up to this incident, it is believed they responded to fight between two other men.
Garner broke up the fight and the two other men fled, so that left the cops with nobody to harass except Garner, whom they apparently knew from his history of selling untaxed cigarettes.
Garner weighed 400 pounds and had a series of health complications, which will no doubt be the blame for his death.
But the video speaks for itself. He was killed by the NYPD.

Summer in NYC isn't really summer until you get your butt on a rooftop. My pick was Jimmy Rooftop. Sunday's after 3pm are bomb! Amazing music courtesy of DJ Cato. I believe it is doorman discretion, which means, dress your best and don't travel with a bunch of dudes. You get an amazing view of the sun setting over the Hudson River and you get to splash around in the pool if you so choose. I chose this spot because I used to work here and loved it!

Yes! Go to Church! After you party it up Saturday night or Sunday afternoon bring your sinful behind to this awesome church! You don't have to be religious to attend. Harlem is a large, historical area in northern Manhattan. It's a major residential, cultural and business center. It stretches from the East River west to the Hudson River between 155th Street to the north and 110th Street to the south, which is the northern boundary of Central Park.
Harlem is so large, in fact, that it would be impossible to cover in just one video. So instead, our first stop in our Harlem series will be Central Harlem & West Harlem!
Harlem History:
Harlem was originally a Dutch village founded around 1658. It was named after the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands. In the early 20th century many African Americans moved to this area and in the 1920s and 30s many famous artists, musicians and businessmen became well known in Harlem and took Black culture to a higher level, in a movement known as the Harlem Renaissance.
The Studio Museum of Harlem -- 124 West 125th Street
At The Studio Museum of Harlem, there is more about black history including guided tours, readings and exhibitions of African American art and culture. There is a suggested donation for entry.
The Apollo Theater - 253 West 125th Street
The Apollo Theater is one of the most famous and historic music hall in the U.S. This famous club is almost exclusively associated with African American music and performance. During the Harlem Renaissance and specifically in 1934, the Apollo Theater introduced its regular Amateur Night shows, during which many new stars were born and legends were made. In fact the Apollo launched the careers of famous artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey...just to name a few. During amateur night, the audience would clap to approve the performers they liked and "boo" the performers they weren't too excited about. At that point an "executioner", a man with a broom, would sweep the bad performers off the stage. Even today, every Wednesday is Amateur Night at the Apollo.

Our recent week in New York City was an action-packed one. We decided to set ourselves a challenge to see and do as much as we possibly could, and that gave way to this travel video guide which highlights 50 of the top attractions. In a city like New York this means we barely scratched the surface, but hopefully this video will highlight the cornucopia of possibilities that is the Big Apple.
We try our best to cover all of the top attractions including fine arts, entertainment, festivals, dining, architecture and museums as well as focusing on lesser known off the beaten path attractions to cover all forms of tourism. Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town.
You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. You can ride roller coasters, stroll down the boardwalk, enjoy some beach time, and then head over the Nathan's Famous hot dogs. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface. Strawberry Fields is a section of Central Park dedicated to the memory of John Lennon.
And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. Harlem Meer is a place many New Yorkers have never even seen. It's located in the far northern end of Central Park. Most visitors confine their walking or biking to the area below the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir. Those are great places to visit, to be sure, but Harlem Meer was a present surprise I found one morning while exploring the walking trails north of the Reservoir.
I did a little research and learned Central Park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux named this man-made water body "the Meer," which is Dutch for "lake." It was in commemoration of the 17th Century European settlers who first settled and inhabited Harlem.
Today, families are drawn to the Meer for catch-and-release fishing, skating and swimming at Lasker Rink and Pool, and two nearby playgrounds.
The Meer is also a wildlife habitat fish, turtles, and waterfowl live.
The Charles A. Dana Discovery Center sits at the North end. It's a visitor center run by the Central Park Conservancy. According to the Meer's official website,
"The Center hosts free community programs, seasonal exhibits, and holiday celebrations. There's also live music on the plaza in the summer."

This is just a short video I put together of East River Plaza shopping mall in Harlem, New York City, to help anyone who's going there for the first time.
East River Plaza is located at 116th St. next to the FDR Expressway which sits along the East River on the East Side of Manhattan. So it's easily accessible (depending on traffic volume) from just about anywhere in New York City's boroughs.
There's plenty of parking and there's also an inexpensive car service you can hire if you don't have your own vehicle. The First Avenue and Second Avenue bus lines are just a few blocks away, and it's not hard to get a taxi.
If you come in your own car, be aware that you have to pay at any one of a number of bright yellow kiosks set up outside and inside the parking lot. Make sure you take advantage of one of these, and also make sure you get a ticket when you pay - not just a receipt. The ticket works in the automatic gate at the exit. The receipt does not. You'' wind up paying the full day rate if you don't have a ticket - AND you'll hold up traffic behind you while you're figuring out what's wrong. You'll find that the New Yorkers in the cars behind you will not be happy, and will say so.
The area is very safe.

Three men were cut with a machete during a dispute around 5 a.m ... Saturday ... It was unclear if he knew his attacker ... Police have been asked to step in and assess security after high-profile crimes, which included the slashing death of a former school teacher at an East Harlem teacher in January....
