Information:
The quality of the audio material seems to be in quiet bad condition. Actually, the CD I took the music from, is not remastered at any kind. The music was directly taken from the original mastertapes and put on CD completely unremastered (I think), as this is not an official release for sale.
But in fact, it is the only one which contains Dimitri Tiomkin's self-conducted original recordings.

Liner Notes:
Tiomkin particularly enjoys the American West and feels a strong sense of identity with the early pioneers. Perhaps this provides the clue and explains why the main themes for Duel in the Sun, The Big Sky and Giant have something of the vastness, the huge all-embracingness of plain and sky.
The poetic inspiration of the music is the magnificent landscape surrounding the Missouri River, which is an ever-present feature of the film. The first theme, which starts high and gradually descends, is given to the alto flute with a featherweight accompaniment; the second, which sounds from the valleys and slowly climbs, is played by a quartet of French horns and is introduced as a single line, quite naked and unadorned.
"Forest at Night" is an atmospheric nocturne with cloudy, impressionistic textures and solo trombone, trumpet and horn each emerging momentarily from the gloom like colored shadows; the rythmic mutter of distant tom-toms is heard, and the night music grows into a love scene. The main theme is the alto-flute melody first heard in the "Prelude" and besides exhibiting a fine feeling for nature the music also delves into the complexities of the relationship between Boone Cordell (Dewey Martin) and the Indian chief's daughter Teal-Eye (Elizabeth Threatt) whom he and Jim Deakins (Kirk Douglas) have taken hostage on their trading expedition into unknown north-woods territory. The wide-arched, deep-river music of the "Epilogue" contains a new theme and the two main themes. The music fades out to an unconventional pianissimo recalling the serene beginning of the film.

Dimitri Zinovievich Tiomkin (May 10, 1894 – November 11, 1979) was a Russian-born Hollywood film score composer and conductor. He is considered "one of the giants of Hollywood movie music." Musically trained in Russia, he is best known for his westerns, "where his expansive, muscular style had its greatest impact." Tiomkin received 22 Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars.
Dimitri Tiomkin (Ukrainian: Дмитро Зиновійович Тьомкін, Dmytro Zynoviyovych Tiomkin, Russian: Дмитрий Зиновьевич Тёмкин, Dmitrij Zinov'evič Tjomkin, sometimes transliterated as Dmitri Tiomkin) was born in Kremenchuk, Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire.
His family was of Jewish descent, with his father a "distinguished pathologist" and associate of Professor Paul Ehrlich, the inventor and Nobel laureate noted for discovering a cure for syphilis and for his research in autoimmunity, later becoming chemotherapy. His mother was a musician who began teaching the young Tiomkin piano at an early age. Her hope was to have her son become a professional pianist, according to Tiomkin biographer, Christopher Palmer. Tiomkin described his mother as being "small, blonde, merry and vivacious."

The Guns are a four-piece rock band from South Wales. The current line-up consists of Alex Wiltshire (vocals and guitar), Adam Turner (lead guitar), Tom Coburn (bass guitar) and Chris 'Stix' Davies (drums). The band have stated that they would like to remain independent and have turned down numerous record deals as a result of that. As of 2012, The Guns have released two EPs, and two albums.
After the once popular South Wales band When Reason Sleeps, which contained the frontman for fellow Welsh band The Blackout, Sean Smith, broke up, lead singer Alex Wiltshire set out and recruited Adam Turner on lead guitar, Tom Coburn on bass guitar, and Kob on drums. The Guns were formed, and after a small amount of gigs, they were asked by Pontypridd band Lostprophets to support them during their Liberation Transmission tour, The Guns accepted the offer and went on to play on the main stage at The Full Ponty 2007. Also, during this period The Guns had started work on their debut album With The Guns, and had released a self-titled 3 track CD available through their Myspace and at gigs.

The quality of the audio material seems to be in quiet bad condition. Actually, the CD I took the music from, is not remastered at any kind. The music was directly taken from the original mastertapes and put on CD completely unremastered (I think), as this is not an official release for sale.
But in fact, it is the only one which contains Dimitri Tiomkin's self-conducted original recordings.

Liner Notes:
Tiomkin particularly enjoys the American West and feels a strong sense of identity with the early pioneers. Perhaps this provides the clue and explains why the main themes for Duel in the Sun, The Big Sky and Giant have something of the vastness, the huge all-embracingness of plain and sky.
The poetic inspiration of the music is the magnificent landscape surrounding the Missouri River, which is an ever-present feature of the film. The first theme, which starts high and gradually descends, is given to the alto flute with a featherweight accompaniment; the second, which sounds from the valleys and slowly climbs, is played by a quartet of French horns and is introduced as a single line, quite naked and unadorned.
"Forest at Night" is an atmospheric nocturne with cloudy, impressionistic textures and solo trombone, trumpet and horn each emerging momentarily from the gloom like colored shadows; the rythmic mutter of distant tom-toms is heard, and the night music grows into a love scene. The main theme is the alto-flute melody first heard in the "Prelude" and besides exhibiting a fine feeling for nature the music also delves into the complexities of the relationship between Boone Cordell (Dewey Martin) and the Indian chief's daughter Teal-Eye (Elizabeth Threatt) whom he and Jim Deakins (Kirk Douglas) have taken hostage on their trading expedition into unknown north-woods territory. The wide-arched, deep-river music of the "Epilogue" contains a new theme and the two main themes. The music fades out to an unconventional pianissimo recalling the serene beginning of the film.

In addition to the appearance of the famous Hollywood composer Dimitri Tiomkin, this show is notable for a strange moment @15:00. Groucho does his usual shtick of playing matchmaker to a pair of unmarried contestants, and gets a surprising answer for 1955 when he asks the Air Force lieutenant why he hasn't thought about getting married. All Groucho can say in response, while the audience titters uncomfortably, is "Oh, I see. . . " before quickly changing the subject. A little later, Groucho does get the lieutenant to say that he's interested in going on a date with his beautiful partner, but note the abrupt edit just after-- I've often wondered just what was said here that's been snipped out! This project is a little different, partly because archival material for this film is scarce (*Update: A trailer for a restored version of the film and has now been made available, youtube link added at the bottom of the description) and largely because the music transcends the boundaries of just the film. I have included a few stills and a portrait of the composer in the first suite but from then on are artworks and photos I felt had a kindred relationship with the music and its message.
Art sources are included for the major portions, all due credit and respect to the original artists and photographers.

In addition to the appearance of the famous Hollywood composer Dimitri Tiomkin, this show is notable for a strange moment @15:00. Groucho does his usual shtick of playing matchmaker to a pair of unmarried contestants, and gets a surprising answer for 1955 when he asks the Air Force lieutenant why he hasn't thought about getting married. All Groucho can say in response, while the audience titters uncomfortably, is "Oh, I see. . . " before quickly changing the subject.
A little later, Groucho does get the lieutenant to say that he's interested in going on a date with his beautiful partner, but note the abrupt edit just after-- I've often wondered just what was said here that's been snipped out!
And just in case anyone thinks I'm reading too much into this, I should point out that director Robert Dwan takes special note of this segment in his book about the show, "As Long As They're Laughing". I probably wouldn't have noticed anything unusual otherwise.
