🇰🇷 South Korea: In the kingdom of reverend Moon | 101 East
South Korea's Unification Church is no stranger to controversy. But it is now facing its biggest challenge yet as it prepares for a future without its founder, Moon Sun-myung, better known as Reverend Moon.
Reverend Moon built a church, a multi-billion dollar business and a massive cult of personality, and now he is fighting to ensure a lasting legacy.
The founder of the controversial religious sect is in his 90s. He knows that time is running out and has handed control of operations to his sons.
The church's business arm, the Tongil Foundation, will be run by Moon's fourth son, Kook-jin, while his youngest son, Hyung-jin, will oversee the running of the church.
There is, however, talk of sibling rivalry among Moon's heirs. The oldest living son, Hyun-jin, has been left out in the cold...

Ex-Cult Member Explains How He Escaped the Moonies
When Steven Hassan was 19 years old, he was recruited by the Unification Church, an infamous cult know for its mass marriage ceremonies. He spent two and a half years with the group, working to bring in new members, raise money, and preach the teachings of its controversial founder, Sun Myung Moon—until a near-fatal car accident helped him realize he’d been brainwashed, and led him to flee the cult. After the World Peace and Unification Sanctuary—an offshoot of the Unification Church—nabbed international headlines for holding a blessing ceremony complete with AR-15s and bullet crowns earlier this year, we met up with Hassan to hear more about his time as a “Moonie, find out how he escaped, and learn why he’s since dedicated his life to becoming an expert on cults.

Unification Church members mourn death of founder Sun Myung Moon
(4 Sep 2012) A memorial was set up at the Seoul headquarters of the Unification Church on Tuesday morning, and followers gathered there to mourn the passing of the church's founder, Reverend Sun Myung Moon.
Moon died at the age of 92 on Monday at a church-owned hospital near his home in Gapyeong Country, northeast of Seoul, two weeks after being taken to hospital with pneumonia.
The memorial at the church showed Moon's portrait, decorated with flowers and candles.
Many South Koreans - including those who are not members of the Unification Church - spoke positively about Moon and his work.
He has "done a lot of work for our country and played a crucial role in our industry. So I think he can be seen in a positive light," said 68 year old Seoul office worker Jo Sun-hyung.

So, will the Unification Church survive without its founder? And just how influential are the Moons?

STORYLINE
Tens of thousands of tearful mourners on Saturday attended the funeral of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, the founder of the Unification Church who built a multi-billion-dollar business empire stretching from the Korean Peninsula to the United States.
Moon is a self-proclaimed messiah best known for conducting mass weddings in his efforts to build a multicultural world.
He died at age 92 on 3 September at a church-owned hospital near his home in Gapyeong County, northeast of Seoul, two weeks after being taken to hospital with pneumonia.
Church officials say 180,000 people visited Gapyeong during a 13-day mourning period before the funeral.
His body was originally transferred to the church's gargantuan white palace on Mount Cheonseong overlooking the lakes and wooded forests of Gapyeong.
It was then brought to the CheongShim Peace World Centre near the church-owned hospital just before the start of the funeral.
"Today, all the world's people are sending you, True Father, off to the heavenly kingdom. We are resolved to follow your life and teachings that you, True Father, have shown us throughout your life," Moon's youngest son, Hyung Jin Moon, told mourners.
The burial will take place near Mount Cheonseong.

"Sung Myung Moon, a hero, is a precious individual, whose death is a loss. I am grateful (for what he has done). Several people have been helped by him," said 78 year old Seoul resident Jang Young-hui.
Moon's body was transferred to the church's huge white palace on Mount Cheonseong overlooking the lakes and wooded forests of Gapyeong County.
His funeral will take place on 15 September, after a 13-day mourning period.
Moon founded his Bible-based religion in Seoul in 1954, a year after the Korean War ended, saying Jesus Christ had personally called on him to complete his work.
The church gained fame - and notoriety - by marrying thousands of followers in mass ceremonies presided over by Moon himself.
The couples often came from different countries and had never met, but were matched up by Moon in a bid to build a multicultural religious world.
Moon created a vast business empire through his church, with ventures in several countries - from hospitals and newspapers to cars and sushi, and even professional sports teams and a ballet troupe.
