Frites: Belgian Fries taste test travel video transcript:
So we have a very exciting taste test coming up today. We are in Bruges, Belgium and that means we have to try Belgian fries. Not French fries. So let's get a look at that and then I'm going to give you a bit of the history behind it.
So there is a bit of a heated debate about whether fries or French fries or Belgian fries. Where exactly did they originate? So our tour guide yesterday was telling us that apparently during World War I there were a lot of British and American soldiers who were between Belgium and France and sometimes they didn't know what country they were in. All they knew is that they could hear French being spoken. So they assumed we must be in France and these must be French Fries. And that is how french fries got their name. But the Belgians believe they were the first to invent this dish and therefore it should be called Belgian fries. I don't really care if they are French or Belgian. All I know is that they are delicious. So I'm ready to dig in to my lunch.
Mmmm.
So so good.
Okay, so tell us about the dressings on these Frites. So over here the main dressing is mayonnaise if you can believe it. And check out that enormous. Generous amount of mayo. Enormous portion of mayo.
And then the other sauce that we got over here is curry ketchup. And what is really cool is when you go to these frites stores, these french fry stores you have all different kinds of sauces you can choose from. There is maybe like 20 different kinds. And you have to pay for them but 'hey' it is good.
So let's go in for a bite. Alright, I'm taking a curry ketchup and I am dunking it into the mayonnaise.
Oh, adventurous. Double sauce adventure.
Wow. Yeah, that is like taking french fries to a whole new level.
It is absolutely delicious. And something that is really neat about these fries is that they are a thicker cut then what we are used to having.
Okay, we are really bad for devouring food but I this like breaks a new record. These were done in like what twenty, thirty, forty seconds as opposed to minutes.
It was so good. I'm so sad we finished it so quickly.
But my favorite sauce definitely the curry ketchup. I know that is not traditionally Belgian but I tried it the first time when I had currywurst in Berlin and it is so nice having ketchup with curry and I love it with my fries. So I recommend trying that if you get the chance. Yeah, I have to agree with you but they also taste really good mixed together as well.
Okay, so price point. How much can we expect to pay for these delicious fries? So we got a medium portion and we paid about 3.50 Euros but if you get a large you can expect to pay maybe 4 and if you get a small you can expect to pay about 2.
Another thing to keep in mind is these shops are all over the city. All you have to do is look for the French Fry symbol. On the maps. The maps show you where to get fries.

Another Belgian government has just collapsed because of a dispute over language. The coalition headed by Prime Minister Yves Leterme lasted just five months. The break-up comes only a few weeks before Belgium is due to take over the rotating EU presidency.The long-simmering spat centers around Francophone Belgians living in the Dutch-speaking suburbs around the capital. Some French speakers there continue to refuse to learn Dutch. But Flemish politicians insist that Dutch is the only official language in those areas. Francophone mayors who sent out election notices in French have not been confirmed in office. And soon anyone wishing to buy a house in the suburbs around Brussels may have to prove that they can speak Dutch fluently. The gulf between French-speaking Walloons and the Dutch-speaking Flemish continues to grow.

Frites: Belgian Fries taste test travel video transcript:
So we have a very exciting taste test coming up today. We are in Bruges, Belgium and that means we have to try Belgian fries. Not French fries. So let's get a look at that and then I'm going to give you a bit of the history behind it.
So there is a bit of a heated debate about whether fries or French fries or Belgian fries. Where exactly did they originate? So our tour guide yesterday was telling us that apparently during World War I there were a lot of British and American soldiers who were between Belgium and France and sometimes they didn't know what country they were in. All they knew is that they could hear French being spoken. So they assumed we must be in France and these must be French Fries. And that is how french fries got their name. But the Belgians believe they were the first to invent this dish and therefore it should be called Belgian fries. I don't really care if they are French or Belgian. All I know is that they are delicious. So I'm ready to dig in to my lunch.
Mmmm.
So so good.
Okay, so tell us about the dressings on these Frites. So over here the main dressing is mayonnaise if you can believe it. And check out that enormous. Generous amount of mayo. Enormous portion of mayo.
And then the other sauce that we got over here is curry ketchup. And what is really cool is when you go to these frites stores, these french fry stores you have all different kinds of sauces you can choose from. There is maybe like 20 different kinds. And you have to pay for them but 'hey' it is good.
So let's go in for a bite. Alright, I'm taking a curry ketchup and I am dunking it into the mayonnaise.
Oh, adventurous. Double sauce adventure.
Wow. Yeah, that is like taking french fries to a whole new level.
It is absolutely delicious. And something that is really neat about these fries is that they are a thicker cut then what we are used to having.
Okay, we are really bad for devouring food but I this like breaks a new record. These were done in like what twenty, thirty, forty seconds as opposed to minutes.
It was so good. I'm so sad we finished it so quickly.
But my favorite sauce definitely the curry ketchup. I know that is not traditionally Belgian but I tried it the first time when I had currywurst in Berlin and it is so nice having ketchup with curry and I love it with my fries. So I recommend trying that if you get the chance. Yeah, I have to agree with you but they also taste really good mixed together as well.
Okay, so price point. How much can we expect to pay for these delicious fries? So we got a medium portion and we paid about 3.50 Euros but if you get a large you can expect to pay maybe 4 and if you get a small you can expect to pay about 2.
Another thing to keep in mind is these shops are all over the city. All you have to do is look for the French Fry symbol. On the maps. The maps show you where to get fries.

Belgian Congo, French Congo Belge, former colony (coextensive with the present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo) in Africa, ruled by Belgium from 1908 until 1960. It was established by the Belgian parliament to replace the previous, privately owned Congo Free State, after international outrage over abuses there brought pressure for supervision and accountability. The official Belgian attitude was paternalism: Africans were to be cared for and trained as if they were children. They had no role in legislation, but traditional rulers were used as agents to collect taxes and recruit labour; uncooperative rulers were deposed. In the late 1950s, when France and the United Kingdom worked with their colonies to prepare for independence, Belgium still portrayed the Congo as an idyllic land of parent-child relationships between Europeans and Africans.
Private European and American corporations invested heavily in the Belgian Congo after World War I. Large plantations (growing cotton, oil palms, coffee, cacao, and rubber) and livestock farms were developed. In the interior, gold, diamonds, copper, tin, cobalt, and zinc were mined; the colony became an important source of uranium for the United States during World War II. Africans worked the mines and plantations as indentured labourers on four- to seven-year contracts, in accordance with a law passed in Belgium in 1922. Roads, railroads, electric stations, and public buildings were constructed by forced labour.
African resistance challenged the colonial regime from the beginning. A rebellion broke out in several eastern districts in 1919 and was not suppressed until 1923. Anti-European religious groups were active by the 1920s, including Kimbanguism and the Negro Mission in the west and Kitawala in the southeast. Unrest increased in the depression years (1931–36) and during World War II. Because political associations were prohibited at the time, reformers organized into cultural clubs such as Abako, a Bakongo association formed in 1950. The first nationwide Congolese political party, the Congo National Movement, was launched in 1958 by Patrice Lumumba and other Congolese leaders. In January 1959, riots broke out in Leopoldville (now Kinshasa) after a rally was held calling for the independence of the Congo. Violent altercations between Belgian forces and the Congolese also occurred later that year, and Belgium, which previously maintained that independence for the Congo would not be possible in the immediate future, suddenly capitulated and began making arrangements for the Congo’s independence. Belgian Congo, French Congo Belge, former colony (coextensive with the present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo) in Africa, ruled by Belgium from 1908 until 1960. It was established by the Belgian parliament to replace the previous, privately owned Congo Free State, after international outrage over abuses there brought pressure for supervision and accountability. The official Belgian attitude was paternalism: Africans were to be cared for and trained as if they were children. They had no role in legislation, but traditional rulers were used as agents to collect taxes and recruit labour; uncooperative rulers were deposed. In the late 1950s, when France and the United Kingdom worked with their colonies to prepare for independence, Belgium still portrayed the Congo as an idyllic land of parent-child relationships between Europeans and Africans.
Private European and American corporations invested heavily in the Belgian Congo after World War I. Large plantations (growing cotton, oil palms, coffee, cacao, and rubber) and livestock farms were developed. In the interior, gold, diamonds, copper, tin, cobalt, and zinc were mined; the colony became an important source of uranium for the United States during World War II. Africans worked the mines and plantations as indentured labourers on four- to seven-year contracts, in accordance with a law passed in Belgium in 1922. Roads, railroads, electric stations, and public buildings were constructed by forced labour.
African resistance challenged the colonial regime from the beginning. A rebellion broke out in several eastern districts in 1919 and was not suppressed until 1923. Anti-European religious groups were active by the 1920s, including Kimbanguism and the Negro Mission in the west and Kitawala in the southeast. Unrest increased in the depression years (1931–36) and during World War II. Because political associations were prohibited at the time, reformers organized into cultural clubs such as Abako, a Bakongo association formed in 1950. The first nationwide Congolese political party, the Congo National Movement, was launched in 1958 by Patrice Lumumba and other Congolese leaders. In January 1959, riots broke out in Leopoldville (now Kinshasa) after a rally was held calling for the independence of the Congo. Violent altercations between Belgian forces and the Congolese also occurred later that year, and Belgium, which previously maintained that independence for the Congo would not be possible in the immediate future, suddenly capitulated and began making arrangements for the Congo’s independence. The Congo became an independent republic on June 30, 1960.

The nation's politicians are bickering over an issue that's plagued the country since its creation in 1830: how do you reconcile the French speaking Walloons in the south and the Dutch speaking Flemish in the north? How can you have national co-operation when the people who make up the nation don't share a common language let alone read the same newspapers, watch the same television or vote for the same politicians?
Asked "What is Belgium actually for?" those on the Flemish far right have a devastating answer. "Belgium in my opinion is an occupier, because basically it was created to let the French culture dominate the Dutch culture, so in my opinion it's an occupier." That's the opinion of the new leader of the Flemish far-right, Bruno Valkeniers.
The conflict even intrudes into the celebrity show biz media.
Minutes after being crowned Miss Belgium, Alizee Poulicek, a French speaker, stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine and into the fire of the separatist debate. Asked an innocuous question in Flemish (Dutch), she was unable to reply. Booed by the crowd she was pilloried by the Dutch language press as being representative of the arrogance displayed by French speaking Belgians.
Ms Poulicek has seen the linguistic light and confides in Epstein that actually she's very keen, "to learn Dutch and to do a lot of things on the Dutch side of the country and with Dutch people... and I have to do my best to try to speak Dutch."
