Highlights of a debate held on Sunday 9 August 2015 at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. This was the second in a series of supporting discussions bringing together a variety of expert speakers and commentators to discuss issues and topics raised by our summer season of plays, including The Merchant of Venice, Othello and The Jew of Malta.
Speakers discuss whether Othello can be considered a racist play. The debate drew on our then current production, and examined what it means to stage a contemporary interpretation of the play.

Shakespeare's timeless classic of love, jealousy and revenge is broadcast live in Cineworld from Stratford-upon-Avon. The greatest general of his age, Othello is both a fearsome warrior and a loving husband, as equally devoted to his beloved Desdemona as he is to defending Venice from its enemies. However, the treacherous Iago lurks in the shadows, driven by prejudice and hatred to destroy Othello, who realises too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but his own fragile and destructive pride.
Holby City actor Hugh Quarshie returns to the RSC to play the iconic Othello, following his roles in Faust and Julius Caesar, whilst film and theatre actor Lucian Msamati plays the scheming Iago. Broadcast live in Cineworld from Stratford-upon-Avon, this riveting new production is directed by Iqbal Khan, who directed the Bard's Much Ado About Nothing to great success back in 2012.

Lucian Msamati
Lucian Msamati, sometimes credited as Wiina Msamati, is a British-Tanzanian film, television and theatre actor.
Early life and education
Lucian Gabriel Wiina Msamati was born in the United Kingdom and brought up in Zimbabwe by his Tanzanian parents, a doctor and a nurse; he is the eldest of four siblings. His primary education began at Olympio Primary School in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, and continued at Avondale Primary School in Harare, Zimbabwe. After secondary education at Prince Edward School in Harare, he studied towards a BA Honours Degree in French and Portuguese at the University of Zimbabwe from 1995–97.
Career
Theatre
After University he took a 'day-job' as an advertising copywriter and freelance radio presenter. He also worked as a voice-over artist, compere and after-dinner speaker.
In 1994 Msamati and school friends, Shaheen Jassat (deceased), Craig and Gavin Peter, Kevin Hanssen, Roy Chizivano, Sarah Norman founded what would become Zimbabwe's acclaimed Over the Edge Theatre Company in Harare, later joined by Erica Glyn-Jones, Zane E Lucas, Chipo Chung, Karin Alexander and Michael Pearce. The company celebrated its 10th anniversary in December 2004 having flown the Zimbabwe flag across Europe, the US and South Africa. The last few years have seen individual members pursuing other interests. Though not officially disbanded, there are no immediate plans of an Over the Edge reunion. From 1998 to 2001, the company performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland; some plays were written by Msamati.

Highlights of a debate held on Sunday 9 August 2015 at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. This was the second in a series of supporting discussions bringing together a variety of expert speakers and commentators to discuss issues and topics raised by our summer season of plays, including The Merchant of Venice, Othello and The Jew of Malta.
Speakers discuss whether Othello can be considered a racist play. The debate drew on our then current production, and examined what it means to stage a contemporary interpretation of the play.

Shakespeare's timeless classic of love, jealousy and revenge is broadcast live in Cineworld from Stratford-upon-Avon. The greatest general of his age, Othello is both a fearsome warrior and a loving husband, as equally devoted to his beloved Desdemona as he is to defending Venice from its enemies. However, the treacherous Iago lurks in the shadows, driven by prejudice and hatred to destroy Othello, who realises too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but his own fragile and destructive pride.
Holby City actor Hugh Quarshie returns to the RSC to play the iconic Othello, following his roles in Faust and Julius Caesar, whilst film and theatre actor Lucian Msamati plays the scheming Iago. Broadcast live in Cineworld from Stratford-upon-Avon, this riveting new production is directed by Iqbal Khan, who directed the Bard's Much Ado About Nothing to great success back in 2012.

Shakespeare's timeless classic of love, jealousy and revenge is broadcast live in Cineworld from Stratford-upon-Avon. The greatest general of his age, Othello is both a fearsome warrior and a loving husband, as equally devoted to his beloved Desdemona as he is to defending Venice from its enemies. However, the treacherous Iago lurks in the shadows, driven by prejudice and hatred to destroy Othello, who realises too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but his own fragile and destructive pride.
Holby City actor Hugh Quarshie returns to the RSC to play the iconic Othello, following his roles in Faust and Julius Caesar, whilst film and theatre actor Lucian Msamati plays the scheming Iago. Broadcast live in Cineworld from Stratford-upon-Avon, this riveting new production is directed by Iqbal Khan, who directed the Bard's Much Ado About Nothing to great success back in 2012.

Lucian Msamati
Lucian Msamati, sometimes credited as Wiina Msamati, is a British-Tanzanian film, television and theatre actor.
Early life and education
Lucian Gabriel Wiina Msamati was born in the United Kingdom and brought up in Zimbabwe by his Tanzanian parents, a doctor and a nurse; he is the eldest of four siblings. His primary education began at Olympio Primary School in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, and continued at Avondale Primary School in Harare, Zimbabwe. After secondary education at Prince Edward School in Harare, he studied towards a BA Honours Degree in French and Portuguese at the University of Zimbabwe from 1995–97.
Career
Theatre
After University he took a 'day-job' as an advertising copywriter and freelance radio presenter. He also worked as a voice-over artist, compere and after-dinner speaker.
In 1994 Msamati and school friends, Shaheen Jassat (deceased), Craig and Gavin Peter, Kevin Hanssen, Roy Chizivano, Sarah Norman founded what would become Zimbabwe's acclaimed Over the Edge Theatre Company in Harare, later joined by Erica Glyn-Jones, Zane E Lucas, Chipo Chung, Karin Alexander and Michael Pearce. The company celebrated its 10th anniversary in December 2004 having flown the Zimbabwe flag across Europe, the US and South Africa. The last few years have seen individual members pursuing other interests. Though not officially disbanded, there are no immediate plans of an Over the Edge reunion. From 1998 to 2001, the company performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland; some plays were written by Msamati.
