George Orwell

Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), who used the pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. His work is marked by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism.

Orwell wrote literary criticism, poetry, fiction, and polemical journalism. He is perhaps best known for his dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) and the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945). His non-fiction works, including The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), documenting his experience of working class life in the north of England, and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, are widely acclaimed, as are his essays on politics, literature, language, and culture. In 2008, The Times ranked him second on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".

Orwell's work continues to influence popular and political culture, and the term Orwellian—descriptive of totalitarian or authoritarian social practices—has entered the language together with many of his neologisms, including, but not limited to, cold war, Big Brother, Thought Police, Room 101, memory hole, newspeak, doublethink, and thoughtcrime.

Eric Arthur

Eric Ross Arthur, CC (1 July 1898 – 1 November 1982) was a Canadian architect, writer and educator.

Born in Dunedin, New Zealand and educated in England, he served in World War I with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He emigrated to Canada in 1923 to teach architecture at the University of Toronto.

During the Centennial of the City of Toronto, in 1934, Arthur was on the "Toronto's Hundred Years" Publication Committee, which published Toronto's 100 Years.

Arthur was a professor until 1966, and remained a professor emeritus until his death. In 1963, he wrote the book, Toronto: No Mean City. In 1968, he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.

A stage name, also called a screen name, is a pseudonym used by performers and entertainers such as actors, wrestlers, comedians, and musicians.

Motivation to use a stage name

A performer will often take a stage name because his/her real name is considered unattractive, dull, or unintentionally amusing, is difficult to pronounce or spell, has been used by another notable individual, or projects an undesired image. Sometimes a performer adopts a name that is unusual or outlandish to attract attention. Other performers use a stage name in order to retain anonymity. The equivalent concept among writers is called a nom de plume or pen name, while the term ring name is used in professional wrestling. In radio, the term "radio name" or "air name" is used. For example, well-known talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, who now uses his real name, was known under the radio name Jeff Christie in his days as a top-40 disk jockey.

Animal Farm

Animal Farm is an allegorical and dystopian novella by George Orwell, first published in England on 17 August 1945. According to Orwell, the book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. Orwell, a democratic socialist, was a critic of Joseph Stalin and hostile to Moscow-directed Stalinism, an attitude that was critically shaped by his experiences during the Spanish Civil War. The Soviet Union, he believed, had become a brutal dictatorship, built upon a cult of personality and enforced by a reign of terror. In a letter to Yvonne Davet, Orwell described Animal Farm as a satirical tale against Stalin ("un conte satirique contre Staline"), and in his essay "Why I Write" (1946), wrote that Animal Farm was the first book in which he tried, with full consciousness of what he was doing, "to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole".

The original title was Animal Farm: A Fairy Story; U.S. publishers dropped the subtitle when it was published in 1946, and only one of the translations during Orwell's lifetime kept it. Other titular variations include subtitles like "A Satire" and "A Contemporary Satire". Orwell suggested the title Union des républiques socialistes animales for the French translation, which abbreviates to URSA, the Latin for "bear", a symbol of Russia, which also played on the French name of the Soviet Union, Union des républiques socialistes soviétiques.

One of those books is 1984. The author was born Eric Arthur Blair, but was probably most know by his pen name, George Orwell. George Orwell was one of the greatest visionaries of the twentieth century who identified himself as a democratic socialist. Under the Soviet Union he was forced to flee under communism suppression of socialist dissidents. In 1945 he wrote Animal Farm, a novel anthropomorphizing the animal kingdom, meant to serve as a metaphor for Stalin's betrayal of the Russian Revolution. Soon after, Orwell wrote his most famous book of all time, 1984, which portrayed a terrifying future of a total surveillance and police state. Tragically, just one year after it published, Orwell died of tuberculosis at the unforgivably young age of 46. What novels did Orwell write? How are his works viewed today? George Orwell’s real name was Eric Blair, and he was born in India in 1903. At the age of one, his mother took him and his two sisters to live in England. He spent the remainder of his childhood in a town called Henley-on-Thames. Eric was a poor student in college, and he eventually joined the Imperial Police. As a part of this organization, he lived and worked in Burma where he was responsible for the safety and security of more than 200,000 people. During his young adult life, Blair also lived in Paris for two years before returning to England and living in his family home for five years. He became a private tutor and eventually a teacher. At the outbreak of World War II, Eric was deemed unfit for military service because of poor physical health. However, he did join the Home Guard, a volunteer organization that was intended to serve as a secondary defense in the event of a Nazi invasion of Great Britain. Blair also worked for the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) by supervising broadcasts to India, which were intended to act as a counter to Nazi propaganda. As his life progressed, Eric found a career as a writer. He began using the pseudonym George Orwell and wrote several works of non-fiction. These books usually described the living conditions of the poor or related his experiences traveling in different parts of the world. He also wrote a large number of hard-hitting political commentaries which appeared in newspapers and magazines. Additionally, he reviewed many books and became a notable influence on literary criticism. Orwell became best known for two works of fiction. Animal Farm, published in 1945, and Nineteen Eighty-Four, published in 1949, are both highly regarded works of fiction. Animal Farm tells the story of a group of pigs that lead a revolt and take over their farm. It serves as an allegory for Joseph Stalin’s rise to power in the Soviet Union. Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian tale of a society completely controlled by its government. It is viewed by many as one of the most influential novels of the 20th Century. Eric Blair (Orwell) died in January of 1950 at the age of 46. He had long suffered from poor physical health and had been diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1947. His death was caused by a burst artery in his lung. He was buried with a simple headstone which bears the name Eric Arthur Blair, and the marker makes no reference to the name George Orwell. Orwell is remembered today as one of the world’s greatest authors. His influence reached far beyond the world of literature. Terms that Orwell created, such as “doublethink,” “thought police,” and “Big Brother” are all used in popular culture today. Additionally, he was the first modern author to use the phrase “cold war.” Also, even his name has entered the common language. When someone is attempting to describe an oppressive, overreaching government, the individual might use the term “Orwellian.” George Orwell’s books are required reading in high school classrooms around the world. His impact on society will surely continue to be felt for years to come.

Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 -- 21 January 1950),known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. His work is marked by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and commitment to democratic socialism. Nineteen Eighty-Four, sometimes published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by George Orwell published in 1949. The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation, dictated by a political system euphemistically named English Socialism (or Ingsoc in the government's invented language, Newspeak) under the control of a privileged Inner Party elite that persecutes all individualism and independent thinking as "thoughtcrimes".The tyranny is epitomized by Big Brother, the quasi-divine Party leader who enjoys an intense cult of personality, but who may not even exist. Big Brother and the Party justify their oppressive rule in the name of a supposed greater good.[1] The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party who works for the Ministry of Truth (or Minitrue), which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to rewrite past newspaper articles so that the historical record always supports the current party line. Smith is a diligent and skillful worker, but he secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. As literary political fiction and dystopian science-fiction, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic novel in content, plot, and style. Many of its terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Room 101, Telescreen, 2 + 2 = 5, and memory hole, have entered everyday use since its publication in 1949. Moreover, Nineteen Eighty-Four popularised the adjective Orwellian, which describes official deception, secret surveillance, and manipulation of the past by a totalitarian or authoritarian state. In 2005, the novel was chosen by TIME magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005.[It was awarded a place on both lists of Modern Library 100 Best Novels, reaching number 13 on the editor's list, and 6 on the readers' list.[6] In 2003, the novel was listed at number 8 on the BBC's survey The Big Read. EricArthurBlair comes from the late evening, the smell of old books. Summer rain on concrete -the feeling of bare feet on kitchen tiles. EricArthurBlair, comes from the texture of white stucco ceilings, and brown corduroy couches -where comfort is comfortable. EricArthurBlair met not too long ago. Formed through vehicles such as mutual interest and organic chemistry. Mathew Denyes and Zach Goddard went to High School together. They talked about playing for the better half of year, and after procrastination became tiresome in itself, EricArthurBlair was formed in a glucose star burst that breathed life into the mouth of February. Austin was seen performing with a band called "These Lights" (they're awesome check them out), that he still currently performs with, and was recruited almost immediately. Zachary Stuckey was recruited by Mathew Denyes when it was realized that EAB should probably have a bass player (and who better than a dream bucket like Stuckey). Then there was Meat, and now Patrick Hamilton makes beautiful noises with his throat. We love Patrick. He was born on June 25th, 1903, in Motihari, Bengal Presidency, British India. There... Then, roughly 10 years later... George Orwell... ... was accepted into St. Cyprian's School, in Eastbourne, Sussex at age 11, for his mother wished for him to have a good education. Then, after one semester at Wellington College, he decided to transfer to Eton College, which he attended from 1917-1921. Wellington Eton After graduating from Eton, Eric Arthur Blair wanted to further his education by going to Oxbridge, but insufficient funds decapitated his chances. Therefore, he decided to become one of the Imperial Police Force, stationed in Burma. In 1927, Eric Arthur Blair contracted Dengue Fever, which allowed him to leave his current post, in Katha, roughly 6 months early. While recovering from The Dengue Fever in England, Blair reevaluated his life and decided that he wanted to become a writer. After a period of being a struggling new author, he hit it big when he wrote "The Road to Wigan Pier" in 1936, which wasn't released to the public until 1937. Before the book he had written was even released, Eric found something, or someone rather, to preoccupy his time. Soon afterward he married his first wife, Eileen O'Shaughnessy. Soon after marrying his wife, Eileen, they went to Spain as a fighters for the Republican Side in the Spanish Civil War. During the course of action, he was shot in the neck and nearly killed. Lets break it down to Math... In 1944, after returning from Spain, Orwell finished the anti-Stalinist allegory Animal Farm that was published in Britain on August 17th, 1945, and in the U.S. on August 26th, 1946. During the Second World War, Orwell wrote a weekly radio political commentary, designed to counter German and Japanese propaganda in India. At the time, radio broadcasts were still a major staple in the communities mass-media needs.. Then, shortly before the end of World War II, Eric Arthur Blair's wife died during an operation of some sort. The details are unclear, but what is known is that she died on March 29th, 1945. Following that, in the year 1949, Orwell wrote what was quite possibly his most famous book. "1984" was a book that showed what it was like to live in a "utopia" that controls everything, including your own thoughts. Within a matter of weeks, Orwell fell in love, once again. His second wife was Sonia Brownell, whom many of his friends considered to be a gold-digger. On January 21st, 1950, Eric Arthur Blair (or George Orwell, as he was better known) died at age 46, from tuberculosis in London. The gravestone made no mention of popular pen name, it simply stated: "Here lies Eric Arthur Blair, born June 25, 1903, died January 21, 1950." To this day, George Orwell continues to help guide new and upcoming writers. He wrote a book, entitled Politics and the English Language, which gave six rules for writers to follow, that are still in use today. The Six Rules 1) Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print. 2) Never us a long word where a short one will do. 3) If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out. 4) Never use the passive where you can use the active. 5) Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent. 6) Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.
