Five years into World War II, the future of Europe hangs in the balance, as 34,000 US soldiers embark on a mission to launch the biggest attack ever from sea. This fascinating documentary, interviews the soldiers who fought at Omaha, recalling their experiences as they approached the shore line under intense cross fire. Using CGI graphics to recreate and illustrate what happened on D Day, the programme also explores the weaponry used in the first wave of the invasion.Omaha Beach is the code name for one of the five sectors of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France in the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944, during World War II. The beach is located on the coast of Normandy, France, facing the English Channel, and is 5 miles (8 km) long, from east of Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes to west of Vierville-sur-Mer on the right bank of the Douve River estuary. Operation Overlord was the code name for the Battle of Normandy, the operation that launched the invasion of German-occupied western Europe during World War II by Allied forces.
The operation commenced on 6 June 1944 with the Normandy landings (Operation Neptune, commonly known as D-Day). A 12,000-plane airborne assault preceded an amphibious assault involving almost 7,000 vessels. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on 6 June; more than three million allied troops were in France by the end of August
Allied land forces that saw combat in Normandy on D-Day itself came from Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. Free French Forces and Poland also participated in the battle after the assault phase, and there were also minor contingents from Belgium, Greece, the Netherlands, and Norway. Other Allied nations participated in the naval and air forces.
The battle for Normandy continued for more than two months, concluding with the closing of the Falaise pocket on 24 August, the Liberation of Paris on 25 August, and the German retreat across the Seine which was completed on 30 August 1944.

D-day was the largest seaborne invasion in world history and was a pivotal moment in WWII.
On the morning of June 6, 1944, nearly 160,000 allied soldiers crossed the English Channel and stormed five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of Normandy, France. The United States led the assault to try to retake the western coast of Europe from the Germans, who had conquered and been occupying it for four years.
In the months and weeks leading up to the invasion, the allies used a variety of means to deceive the Germans, who knew an attack was coming, but didn't know where it be focused.
After postponing the invasion by a day because of bad weather, the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces, American General Dwight D. Eisenhower, gave the go-ahead for the operation, codenamed Neptune.
Shortly after midnight, 24,000 British, US, and Canadian airborne troops parachuted into France. Around the same time, minesweepers began clearing channels for the invasion fleet, which was comprised of almost 7,000 boats of all types--although around 4,100 of these were landing crafts carrying infantrymen. The Germans, by contrast, had just over 100 total ships in the area at the time and were heavily outnumbered. The same was true for the German Air Force, which could muster only 815 aircraft over Normandy in comparison to the Allies' 9,500.
Naval bombardment of the beaches commenced at 05:45 AM, while it was still dark. Allied infantry and armoured divisions began landing on the coast of France starting at 06:30. The men landed under heavy fire from gun emplacements overlooking the beaches. The shore was mined and covered with wooden stakes, metal tripods, and barbed wire obstacles, making the work of the beach clearing teams difficult and dangerous. Casualties were heaviest at Omaha, with its high cliffs. At Gold, Juno, and Sword, several towns were cleared in house-to-house fighting.
The Allies did not achieve all of their goals on D-Day. Only Juno and Gold beach were linked in the first 24 hours, and all five bridgeheads were not connected until nearly a week had passed. However, the operation was successful as the Allies gained a precious foothold that gradually expanded as they drove into Germany from the west over the coming months.
German casualties on D-Day were around 1,000 men. Allied casualties were at least 12,000, with 4,414 confirmed dead.
With Russia bearing down from the east, the European side of World War II ended with the surrender of Germany less than a year after the Normandy operation. Once Japan surrendered in September, 1945, the deadliest conflict in human history was over. It had taken the lives of anywhere from 50 to 85 million people.
The outcome of the war has been critical in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the last 70 years. The victorious great powers—the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, and what is now the Russian Federation—became the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

British and American veterans are set to leave Portsmouth and travel to Normandy for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
The World War Two veterans have journeyed from across the UK and the US ahead of a series of memorial events to be held this week.
Some of the former servicemen are returning to the beaches of northern France for the first time in 70 years.

After two years on the drawing board, D-Day was the most meticulously planned operation in military history - a logistical effort on a scale never seen before or since. On June 6, 1944, 3,000 planes dropped 23,000 airborne troops behind German lines, and 7,000 ships delivered around 20,000 military vehicles and 130,000 allied soldiers to storm five heavily defended French beaches in an all-or-nothing assault on Nazi-occupied Europe. Once on the shore, the troops had to negotiate two million mines buried in the sand, 46,000 fearsome beach obstacles, and hundreds of miles of barbed wire while dodging the shells and bullets fired by 40,000 German defenders.

The Normandy landings, codenamed Operation Neptune, were the landing operations of the Allied invasion of Normandy, in Operation Overlord, during World War II. The landings commenced on Tuesday, June 6, 1944 (D-Day), beginning at 6:30 AM British Double Summer Time (GMT+2). In planning, D-Day was the term used for the day of actual landing, which was dependent on final approval.
The landings were conducted in two phases: an airborne assault landing of 24,000 British, American, Canadian and Free French airborne troops shortly after midnight, and an amphibious landing of Allied infantry and armoured divisions on the coast of France starting at 6:30 AM. There were also decoy operations under the codenames Operation Glimmer and Operation Taxable to distract the German forces from the real landing areas.
Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces was General Dwight Eisenhower while overall command of ground forces (21st Army Group) was given to General Bernard Montgomery. The operation, planned by a team under Lieutenant-General Frederick Morgan, was the largest amphibious invasion in world history and was executed by land, sea, and air elements under direct British command with over 160,000 troops landing on June 6, 1944. 195,700 Allied naval and merchant navy personnel in over 5,000 ships were involved. The invasion required the transport of soldiers and material from the United Kingdom by troop-laden aircraft and ships, the assault landings, air support, naval interdiction of the English Channel and naval fire-support. The landings took place along a 50-mile (80 km) stretch of the Normandy coast divided into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.

This educational documentary covers the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. On June 6, 1944, 3,000 planes dropped 23,000 airborne troops behind German lines, and 7,000 ships delivered around 20,000 military vehicles and 130,000 allied soldiers to storm five heavily defended French beaches in an all-or-nothing assault on Nazi-occupied Europe. Once on the shore, the troops had to negotiate two million mines buried in the sand, 46,000 fearsome beach obstacles, and hundreds of miles of barbed wire while dodging the shells and bullets fired by 40,000 German defenders. Focusing on the most important strip of Omaha beach that day - the exit at Vierville-sur-Mer - D-DAY 360 strips D-Day back to its raw data to reveal how the odds of victory, in the greatest gamble of World War II, swung on what happened over a five-hour period on a five mile stretch of French coastline. Operation Overlord was the code name for the Battle of Normandy, the operation that launched the invasion of German-occupied western Europe during World War II by Allied forces. The operation commenced on 6 June 1944 with the Normandy landings (Operation Neptune, commonly known as D-Day). Landings here were necessary in order to link up the British landings to the east at Gold Beach with the American landing to the west at Utah Beach, thus providing a continuous lodgement on the Normandy coast of the Bay of the Seine. Taking Omaha was to be the responsibility of United States Army troops, with sea transport and naval artillery support provided by the U.S. Navy
and elements of the British Royal Navy.

This fascinating documentary, interviews the soldiers who fought at Omaha, recalling their experiences as they approached the shore line under intense cross fire. Using CGI graphics to recreate and illustrate what happened on D Day, the programme also explores the weaponry used in the first wave of the invasion.Omaha Beach is the code name for one of the five sectors of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France in the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944, during World War II. The beach is located on the coast of Normandy, France, facing the English Channel, and is 5 miles (8 km) long, from east of Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes to west of Vierville-sur-Mer on the right bank of the Douve River estuary. Landings here were necessary in order to link up the British landings to the east at Gold Beach with the American landing to the west at Utah Beach, thus providing a continuous lodgement on the Normandy coast of the Bay of the Seine. Taking Omaha was to be the responsibility of United States Army troops, with sea transport and naval artillery support provided by the U.S. Navy
and elements of the British Royal Navy.

D-day was the largest seaborne invasion in world history and was a pivotal moment in WWII.
On the morning of June 6, 1944, nearly 160,000 allied soldiers crossed the English Channel and stormed five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of Normandy, France. The United States led the assault to try to retake the western coast of Europe from the Germans, who had conquered and been occupying it for four years.
In the months and weeks leading up to the invasion, the allies used a variety of means to deceive the Germans, who knew an attack was coming, but didn't know where it be focused.
After postponing the invasion by a day because of bad weather, the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces, American General Dwight D. Eisenhower, gave the go-ahead for the operation, codenamed Neptune.
Shortly after midnight, 24,000 British, US, and Canadian airborne troops parachuted into France. Around the same time, minesweepers began clearing channels for the invasion fleet, which was comprised of almost 7,000 boats of all types--although around 4,100 of these were landing crafts carrying infantrymen. The Germans, by contrast, had just over 100 total ships in the area at the time and were heavily outnumbered. The same was true for the German Air Force, which could muster only 815 aircraft over Normandy in comparison to the Allies' 9,500.
Naval bombardment of the beaches commenced at 05:45 AM, while it was still dark. Allied infantry and armoured divisions began landing on the coast of France starting at 06:30. The men landed under heavy fire from gun emplacements overlooking the beaches. The shore was mined and covered with wooden stakes, metal tripods, and barbed wire obstacles, making the work of the beach clearing teams difficult and dangerous. Casualties were heaviest at Omaha, with its high cliffs. At Gold, Juno, and Sword, several towns were cleared in house-to-house fighting.
The Allies did not achieve all of their goals on D-Day. Only Juno and Gold beach were linked in the first 24 hours, and all five bridgeheads were not connected until nearly a week had passed. However, the operation was successful as the Allies gained a precious foothold that gradually expanded as they drove into Germany from the west over the coming months.
German casualties on D-Day were around 1,000 men. Allied casualties were at least 12,000, with 4,414 confirmed dead.
With Russia bearing down from the east, the European side of World War II ended with the surrender of Germany less than a year after the Normandy operation. Once Japan surrendered in September, 1945, the deadliest conflict in human history was over. It had taken the lives of anywhere from 50 to 85 million people.
The outcome of the war has been critical in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the last 70 years. The victorious great powers—the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, and what is now the Russian Federation—became the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

After two years on the drawing board, D-Day was the most meticulously planned operation in military history - a logistical effort on a scale never seen before or since. On June 6, 1944, 3,000 planes dropped 23,000 airborne troops behind German lines, and 7,000 ships delivered around 20,000 military vehicles and 130,000 allied soldiers to storm five heavily defended French beaches in an all-or-nothing assault on Nazi-occupied Europe. Once on the shore, the troops had to negotiate two million mines buried in the sand, 46,000 fearsome beach obstacles, and hundreds of miles of barbed wire while dodging the shells and bullets fired by 40,000 German defenders.

After two years on the drawing board, D-Day was the most meticulously planned operation in military history - a logistical effort on a scale never seen before or since. On June 6, 1944, 3,000 planes dropped 23,000 airborne troops behind German lines, and 7,000 ships delivered around 20,000 military vehicles and 130,000 allied soldiers to storm five heavily defended French beaches in an all-or-nothing assault on Nazi-occupied Europe. Once on the shore, the troops had to negotiate two million mines buried in the sand, 46,000 fearsome beach obstacles, and hundreds of miles of barbed wire while dodging the shells and bullets fired by 40,000 German defenders.

Julia: My name's Julia, and I'm the City Wonders guide for the Normandy tour. This tour is unique because we get to see both Utah and Omaha beaches in a day trip from Paris.
Woman 1: I thought the visit to Utah beach was great. It was beautiful. I was excited to be part of the day, to see that.
Man 1: It's a humbling experience really to go to Normandy beach. Something that I think that'll change our life forever.
Woman 2: I really enjoyed going to the cider farms. It was just quite wonderful to see the product and how they grow it, and the pride that they take in their product.
Man 2: The lunch was excellent, too. It was just wonderful, and the restaurant was a very nice restaurant.
Julia: So you can imagine what it was like on D-Day standing up there and seeing all the ships coming in all directions and all the soldiers.
Man 2: Probably the most overwhelming thing for me was the visit to the American Cemetery. Seeing all those crosses and realizing the thousands of soldiers that died that day during that battle with Normandy was, just frankly, an overwhelming feeling to me.
Man 1: The guides were extremely helpful and informative. They really did an excellent job. We really got so much out of the experience. And to think that our soldiers, our allies fought for us during World War II is really a humbling experience, and we'll never forget it.
Julia: This tour's really special to me because my grandfather took part the D-Day landings, so every time I come here, I always think about him.

The protected bay of Calvi was visited with fondness even by the Etruscans, the Venetians and the Greek. The first harbor was built by the Romans. The name Calvi appears several times in history books. This is where Admiral Nelson, the later winner of the Trafalgar battle lost his eye when on the invitation of Paoli, the English troops tried to conquer Corsica from the French. In World War II, the marines of the allied forces departed from here for the invasion of Normandy. The old town built on a 30m high granite rock is surrounded by the walls of an 18th century Genoan fortress. The most important building of the citadel fortified with watchtowers is the old governor's palace. The building is the training center of the foreign legion even today. A tunnel like entrance leads to the castle district.
On its wall, the epigraph, sibitis Calvi semper fidelis or Calvi always remains faithful and the coat of arms of the town can be seen. It's probably only a myth that Christopher Columbus was born in this citadel, however this possibility cannot be excluded completely since when he was born, Corsica was under Genoan authority so the Genoan origin could have meant Calvi also. Anyway a memorial plaque was made for the famous explorer and was placed alongside that of Napoleon. Moreover a street was also named after him.
From the old practice grounds of the citadel, we reach the other famous site of Calvi the church named after St. John the Baptist which is famous for his penitential precessions on good Fridays. At this time, people march with their faces covered by hoods with heavy crosses on their shoulders hoping to gain absolution. The old building was rebuilt after the war against the Turkish. This is when it got its lantern copula. Directly next to it, lived Napoleon when he was a young artillery officer. The lower town with its harbor, cafes with colorful umbrellas, terraced restaurants and the colorful promenade is the direct opposite of the calm upper town. The ships and ferries arriving from France call at Port Quilandry. The passenger, cargo and yacht harbors are separated by moles. The salt tower defining the image of the harbor was built as a watchtower by the Genoans. Later it functioned as a salt storage. It's worth looking back from the light tower at the end of the mole. The view from the citadel unfolds most completely from here and this is the departure point of many cruises. The most scenic of them leads past the Las Sandola Peninsula which was declared a nature reserve up the girolata 60km from here.

From PBS - On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched the biggest armada in history to invade the Normandy beaches and liberate Europe from the Nazis. In less than 24 hours, more than 5,000 ships crossed the English Channel, along with thousands of tanks and landing craft and nearly 200,000 men. Hundreds of ships sank while running the gauntlet of mines and bunkers, creating one of the world's largest underwater archeological sites. Now, NOVA has exclusive access to a unique collaboration between military historians, archeologists, and specialist divers to carry out the first complete survey of the seabed bordering the legendary beachheads. Dive teams, submersibles, and underwater robots will discover and identify key examples of the Allied craft that fell victim to German shellfire, mines, and torpedoes.
