I take a trip to North Wales from London, England. It starts with a train to Chester before meeting up with my new friend John from Boutique Tours and heading into Wales. There the road trip begins and we visit Hawarden Farm for lunch before visiting the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct along the Llangollen Canal, the city of Llangollen and finally the Valle Crucis Abbey on the way to Ruthin. Once in Ruthin we see the Ruthin Castle Hotel where I'm staying and that concludes the episode.

You don't have to travel across the world to see amazing things. We had many plans for our trip to Wales, but ended up enjoying an amazing experience just in one town. The town of Llangollen.
We spent the morning in the softest feather bed ever at Capel Pennant converted Chapel http://www.underthethatch.co.uk/capelp/2 Waking up feeling great we headed into town to get breakfast at Chatwins coffee and cakes, before heading down to the river Dee for a beautiful moment in the sunshine.
But the highlight moment of the day was when we headed to Castell Dinas Bran for an experience that made us remember that there is beauty all over the world. Even in a small Welsh town in November :-)

Less than an hour and a half from Crewe, the Llangollen Railway by the River Dee in Wales boasts some of the most stunning scenery one can see from the seat of a GWR chocolate and cream coach.

I've always wanted to do a driver's eye view video, and during a second visit to the Llangollen Railway to ride the line I did exactly that. With the line's resident 109 DMU (The only 109 to survive in preservation, formed of unit nos.50416 & 56171) in service, I took the opportunity to ask if I could stick my camcorder in the front window to record the journey through the Dee Valley from Carrog to Llangollen, which the crew were more than happy to let me do, so thanks go to them. A short lineside clip of the departure from Carrog has also been added into the mix.
Filmed on a Panasonic HS900 with a Panasonic VW-VM2SE microphone.

If you ever wanted a gentle reminder of the good old days on the Cambrian lines, Llangollen Railway were on hand to host their Spring gala, with a Cambrian theme which would see plenty of GWR action. Without doubt the highlight of the event would be the non stop double headed manors, which would see 7822 'Foxcote Manor' returning for it's first event since extensive boiler work. The other Manor in attendance was 7820 'Dinmore Manor'
With only half a day available to myself, I opted to set up four cameras to capture the Manor's double headed assualt of the 1/80 Berwyn Bank. Apologies for the shaking of the camera in the first scene, the ground was very unstable, also I had to brighten up the 3rd shot as it was very dark due to the poor light, this has unfortunately caused the the sky to be rather bright. I have included a couple of other shots from the gala as a bonus, which feature 6430 'GWR' Pannier Tank departing Llangollen & 4566 double heading with 7822 while Departing Llangollen

Featuring the return to steam of flagship locomotive, 7822 Foxcote Manor, which was appearing in BR black for the first time in preservation, the Llangollen Railway's Spring Steam Gala 2016 took the theme of 'Along Cambrian Lines'. 7820 Dinmore Manor, also in BR unlined black (a preservation first of a pairing of two unlined black manors) and 45xx 4566 were the guest locomotives, joining 7822, 5199 and 6430. An intensive timetable ran with 4 sets in use, including a short mixed train formed of a Suburban Mk1, Van, Open Wagon and Toad Brake Van. Named trains were recreated including double headed Manors on the 'Cambrian Coast Express' and Small Prairie/Manor combination on the 'Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society AGM Special'.

Llangollen (Welsh pronunciation: [ɬaŋˈɡɔɬɛn]) is a small town and community in Denbighshire, north-east Wales, situated on the River Dee and on the edge of the Berwyn mountains. It has a population of 3,412.
Llangollen takes its name from Saint Collen (from the Welsh llan meaning 'church' or 'saint' or perhaps 'holy') and Collen, a 6th century monk who founded a church beside the river there. St Collen is said to have arrived in Llangollen by coracle. As there are no other churches in Wales dedicated to St. Collen, it is possible that this St. Collen may also have connections in both Colan, Cornwall and Langolen, Brittany.
Standing high above the town to the north is Castell Dinas Bran, the former stronghold of the Princes of Powys. Beyond the castle is the limestone escarpment known as the Eglwyseg Rocks. The outcrop continues north to the area known as World's End. The area nearest to the castle is the Panorama Walk, and a monument to local poet I.D. Hooson (from the nearby village of Rhosllanerchrugog) can be found there.

Carrog to Llangollen - A Driver's Eye View
I've always wanted to do a driver's eye view video, and during a second visit to the Llangollen Railway to ride the line I did exactly that. With the line's resident 109 DMU (The only 109 to survive in preservation, formed of unit nos.50416 & 56171) in service, I took the opportunity to ask if I could stick my camcorder in the front window to record the journey through the Dee Valley from Carrog to Llangollen, which the crew were more than happy to let me do, so thanks go to them. A short lineside clip of the departure from Carrog has also been added into the mix. Filmed on a Panasonic HS900 with a Panasonic VW-VM2SE microphone. Enjoy. -

7822 & 7820 Thunder Up Berwyn Bank - Llangollen Railway - Along Cambrian Lines - 2016
If you ever wanted a gentle reminder of the good old days on the Cambrian lines, Llangollen Railway were on hand to host their Spring gala, with a Cambrian theme which would see plenty of GWR action. Without doubt the highlight of the event would be the non stop double headed manors, which would see 7822 'Foxcote Manor' returning for it's first event since extensive boiler work. The other Manor in attendance was 7820 'Dinmore Manor' With only half a day available to myself, I opted to set up four cameras to capture the Manor's double headed assualt of the 1/80 Berwyn Bank. Apologies for the shaking of the camera in the first scene, the ground was very unstable, also I had to brighten up the 3rd shot as it was very dark due to the poor light, this has unfortunately caused the the sky to be... -

Along Cambrian Lines - Llangollen Railway Spring Steam Gala 2016
Featuring the return to steam of flagship locomotive, 7822 Foxcote Manor, which was appearing in BR black for the first time in preservation, the Llangollen Railway's Spring Steam Gala 2016 took the theme of 'Along Cambrian Lines'. 7820 Dinmore Manor, also in BR unlined black (a preservation first of a pairing of two unlined black manors) and 45xx 4566 were the guest locomotives, joining 7822, 5199 and 6430. An intensive timetable ran with 4 sets in use, including a short mixed train formed of a Suburban Mk1, Van, Open Wagon and Toad Brake Van. This year saw a much more intensive timetable than the SSS4 Gala, with no less than 6 Western Region Locomotives taking to the stage. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on the Llangollen canal, May 2009.
This is a brief portrait of the aqueduct and two of the boats that carry passengers across it. The recommended pronunciation is not exact, but it serves many of us locals well enough! The aqueduct, built between 1795 and 1805, is one of Britain's most spectacular products of the Industrial Revolution. Known as "The Stream in the Sky", it was designed by Thomas Telford, the self-educated son of a Scottish shepherd, and built under the direction of William Jessop. The cruise boat shown in this video and a horse drawn boat, both based at Llangollen Wharf, bear the names of these great engineers. Telford's use of a cast-iron trough to carry the water across the Dee valley was revolutionary, allowing a very light, lofty structure with the minimum of stonework. Llangollen Railway 1960s weekend 2015
The weekend of July 25/6 saw the Llangollen Railway host their annual 1960s weekend, with a mixture of steam, diesel, DMU and auto-train workings. This year's event was a pioneer in more ways than one, not just being the first 60s gala to run to Corwen East, but the appearance of 2 locos in a wethered condition; Praire tank 2-6-2T No5199 and Pannier tank 0-6-0ST 6430 (working auto-trains). Without doubt the highlight of the event would be the non stop double headed manors, which would see 7822 'Foxcote Manor' returning for it's first event since extensive boiler work. With only half a day available to myself, I opted to set up four cameras to capture the Manor's double headed assualt of the 1/80 Berwyn Bank. Apologies for the shaking of the camera in the first scene, the ground was very unstable, also I had to brighten up the 3rd shot as it was very dark due to the poor light, this has unfortunately caused the the sky to be rather bright. I have included a couple of other shots from the gala as a bonus, which feature 6430 'GWR' Pannier Tank departing Llangollen & 4566 double heading with 7822 while Departing Llangollen

If you ever wanted a gentle reminder of the good old days on the Cambrian lines, Llangollen Railway were on hand to host their Spring gala, with a Cambrian theme which would see plenty of GWR action. This is a brief portrait of the aqueduct and two of the boats that carry passengers across it. The recommended pronunciation is not exact, but it serves many of us locals well enough!
The aqueduct, built between 1795 and 1805, is one of Britain's most spectacular products of the Industrial Revolution. Known as "The Stream in the Sky", it was designed by Thomas Telford, the self-educated son of a Scottish shepherd, and built under the direction of William Jessop. The cruise boat shown in this video and a horse drawn boat, both based at Llangollen Wharf, bear the names of these great engineers.
Telford's use of a cast-iron trough to carry the water across the Dee valley was revolutionary, allowing a very light, lofty structure with the minimum of stonework. Indeed, the top portion of each pier is hollow. The approach embankment on the Froncysyllte side was at the time the biggest earthwork in the UK. It extends just as far (and high, 90 feet) as earthworks were less costly than fine masonry and cast iron! Also, a bridge of only one boat's width would have caused traffic congestion if it had been much longer, and the embankment has curves that align the canal with the ideal placement for the aqueduct.

Horse drawn boating at Llangollen, 30th May 2009, Part 2
Here's a view of how the boat is prepared for the return trip. The rudder is unshipped and dragged through the water to the other end, while the towrope is unhitched and reattached near the bow. Meanwhile, the horse usually snatches a quick graze. Geordie, a real laid-back character, has been known to kiss passengers on the head as he walks along the boat! Stanley is seen heading out on his last run of the day. During the working season the horses live in a field above the town, with woods for shelter and a lovely view up the valley . Holyhead is the largest town in the county of Anglesey in Wales and is also a major Irish Sea port providing a major ferry crossing point between Holyhead and in particular Dublin for the carriage of both exports and passenger traffic. Meanwhile, the horse usually snatches a quick graze. Geordie, a real laid-back character, has been known to kiss passengers on the head as he walks along the boat!
Stanley is seen heading out on his last run of the day. During the working season the horses live in a field above the town, with woods for shelter and a lovely view up the valley . They spend the winter in another field near Penley.

Holyhead is the largest town in the county of Anglesey in Wales and is also a major Irish Sea port providing a major ferry crossing point between Holyhead and in particular Dublin for the carriage of both exports and passenger traffic.
Geographically it is not based on the Isle of Angelsey, but is located on Holy Island and was at one time connected to Angelsey by
the Four Mile Bridge, the actual distance between the two points, but today the main causeway is known as The Cobb which carries both road and rail connections to and between the two destinations.
Holyhead and the surrounding area has a wealth of history to relates, the town centre was built around St,Cybi's Church which is part of the interior of one of Europe's few three walled Roman forts, the fourth being the Irish Sea! The Romans also during their occupation built the watchtower on Holyhead Mountain which itself was part of an historic hill fort.
There is evidence that passage has been taken by people on both sides of the Irish Sea for over 4000 miles and Holyhead's maritime importance was at its height during the 19th century with the longest breakwater in the entire United Kingdom built to safe guard vessels caught often in the stormy waters of the Irish Sea
The large jetty now is a welcoming point for cruise ships from all over the world.
As a final interesting aside Holyhead is an important destination for twitchers (birdwatchers)

The Llangollen Canal is situated in North Wales. It starts north of Llangollen and flows into to the Shropshire Union Canal north of Nantwich. This impression shows the part between Llangollen and Trevor over a distance of about 5 km. The canal currently has a touristical function.

Here is an example of a video we have produced recently about tour guides in the beautiful city of Oxford. This was completed during our training at the Oxford Film and Video Makers (OFVM) course in Oxford.
A Tour of Guides is a documentary about tourism in Oxford, with a focus on guided tours. The film shows a range of guides involved in different methods of seeing Oxford: by foot, bus, or canal. But which method is best? On a bus tour, the tourist will get to learn "a little about a lot", whereas if the tourist has a specific interest to learn about the University of Oxford, the porter may be of more assistance. If you feel more energetic, you can get up close and personal with the sites and sounds of the city, or have a relaxing ride on a barge on the canals of Oxford, showing a unique side of Oxford that most tourists do not see, and finally a special interview with a porter from one of Oxford Universities most famous colleges. As you will see, all methods of touring Oxford are explored, allowing the viewer to make up their own mind about what they want to learn about Oxford and how they could go about doing this.You will see some beautiful sites of the city in this short documentary, including interviews with tourists who visit and students who live there. So sit back, relax and get ready for us to give you a "A Tour of Guides".
