This video was recorded by Guillem Belmar in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, where he and Sjoukje work at Afûk, a Frisian advocacy organization. West Frisian, also simply called Frisian, is spoken by as many as 470,000 people, primarily in the Dutch province of Friesland, where Leeuwarden (natively, Ljouwert) is the capital city. A Germanic language of the Indo-European family, West Frisian is the most widely spoken of the Frisian languages, which include North and Saterland Frisian; collectively, the Frisian languages are among the most closely related to English and Scots. A literary language since at least the 17th century CE, Frisian media became especially common in the nineteenth century. Thanks to a lively activist movement, it has been a regionally official language in the Netherlands since 1956, and enjoys special protection in the European Union today.

West Frisian, or simply Frisian (Westerlauwersk Frysk or simply Frysk, pronounced [friːs(k)]; Dutch: Westerlauwers Fries, pronounced [fris]) is a West Germanic language spoken mostly in the province of Friesland (Fryslân) in the north of the Netherlands, mostly by those of Frisian ancestry. It is the most widely spoken of the Frisian languages.
In the study of the evolution of English, West Frisian is notable as being the most closely related foreign tongue to the various dialects of Old English spoken across the Heptarchy, these being part of the Anglo-Frisian branch of the West Germanic family, and is therefore often considered to be in-between English and Dutch — Dutch is widely dubbed in-between the Anglo-Saxon derived components of English and German.

Sylt Frisian (Söl'ring)

Language family: Indo-European (Germanic)
Sylt Frisian, or Söl'ring, is the dialect of the North Frisian language spoken on the island of Sylt in the German region of North Frisia. Söl'ring refers to the Söl'ring Frisian word for Sylt, Söl'. Together with the Fering, Öömrang, and Heligolandic dialects, it forms part of the insular group of North Frisian dialects. It differs from the mainland dialects because of its relatively strong Danish influence. Due to mass tourism on Sylt, the dialect has been largely displaced by forms of German and Söl'ring is spoken only by a few hundred people, many of whom no longer reside on Sylt. Although it is taught in several primary schools, its prospects for survival are unfavorable compared with other insular dialects.

West Frisian Dutch
The West Frisian dialect (Dutch: West-Fries) is a Dutch dialect spoken in the contemporary West Friesland region, Wieringen, Wieringermeer, the coastal area from Den Helder to Castricum, and the island of Texel. It is a Hollandic Dutch dialect but is influenced by Frisian (a group of languages distinct from Dutch). It is not to be confused with the language of the Friesland Province internationally indicated with the name West Frisian language (in Dutch simply Fries) although they are related to each other.
The dialect in itself is not a fixed one, as there is a diverse number of subdialects (sometimes referred to as the West Frisian dialect group) that consists of some widely spoken regional dialects, namely Wierings in Wieringen, Tessels or Texels in Texel and the dialect of Vlieland known as Vlielands, which has fallen into disuse. The smaller regions and villages, such as Zijpe, Andijk, Enkhuizen and Schagen, have some distinct differences between them. Slightly more different from the rest of the group is Derps, the dialect of the village Egmond aan Zee.

Name
The name "West Frisian" is only used outside the Netherlands, to distinguish this language from the closely related Frisian languages of Saterland Frisian and North Frisian spoken in Germany. Within the Netherlands, however, "West Frisian" refers to the West Frisian language of the Dutch language while the West Frisian language is almost always just called "Frisian" (in Dutch, Fries for the Frisian language and Westfries for the Dutch dialect.) The unambiguous name used for the Frisian language by linguists in the Netherlands is Westerlauwers Fries [ˈʋɛstərˌlʌu̯ərs ˈfris] (West Lauwers Frisian), the Lauwers being a border stream that separates the Dutch provinces of Friesland and Groningen.
Speakers
Most speakers of West Frisian live in the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands. This province was formerly officially called Friesland, but officially changed its name to Fryslân in 1997. The province has 643,000 inhabitants (2005); of these, 94% can understand spoken Frisian, 74% can speak Frisian, 75% can read Frisian, and 27% can write it.

Sylt Frisian, or Söl'ring, is the dialect of the North Frisian language spoken on the island of Sylt in the German region of North Frisia. Söl'ring refers to the Söl'ring Frisian word for Sylt, Söl'. Together with the Fering, Öömrang, and Heligolandic dialects, it forms part of the insular group of North Frisian dialects. It differs from the mainland dialects because of its relatively strong Danish influence. Due to mass tourism on Sylt, the dialect has been largely displaced by forms of German and Söl'ring is spoken only by a few hundred people, many of whom no longer reside on Sylt. Although it is taught in several primary schools, its prospects for survival are unfavorable compared with other insular dialects.

This video was recorded by Guillem Belmar in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, where he and Sjoukje work at Afûk, a Frisian advocacy organization. West Frisian, also simply called Frisian, is spoken by as many as 470,000 people, primarily in the Dutch province of Friesland, where Leeuwarden (natively, Ljouwert) is the capital city. A Germanic language of the Indo-European family, West Frisian is the most widely spoken of the Frisian languages, which include North and Saterland Frisian; collectively, the Frisian languages are among the most closely related to English and Scots. A literary language since at least the 17th century CE, Frisian media became especially common in the nineteenth century. Thanks to a lively activist movement, it has been a regionally official language in the Netherlands since 1956, and enjoys special protection in the European Union today.

West Frisian, or simply Frisian (Westerlauwersk Frysk or simply Frysk, pronounced [friːs(k)]; Dutch: Westerlauwers Fries, pronounced [fris]) is a West Germanic language spoken mostly in the province of Friesland (Fryslân) in the north of the Netherlands, mostly by those of Frisian ancestry. It is the most widely spoken of the Frisian languages.
In the study of the evolution of English, West Frisian is notable as being the most closely related foreign tongue to the various dialects of Old English spoken across the Heptarchy, these being part of the Anglo-Frisian branch of the West Germanic family, and is therefore often considered to be in-between English and Dutch — Dutch is widely dubbed in-between the Anglo-Saxon derived components of English and German.

Sylt Frisian (Söl'ring)

Language family: Indo-European (Germanic)
Sylt Frisian, or Söl'ring, is the dialect of the North Frisian language spoken on the island of Sylt in the German region of North Frisia. Söl'ring refers to the Söl'ring Frisian word for Sylt, Söl'. Together with the Fering, Öömrang, and Heligolandic dialects, it forms part of the insular group of North Frisian dialects. It differs from the mainland dialects because of its relatively strong Danish influence. Due to mass tourism on Sylt, the dialect has been largely displaced by forms of German and Söl'ring is spoken only by a few hundred people, many of whom no longer reside on Sylt. Although it is taught in several primary schools, its prospects for survival are unfavorable compared with other insular dialects.
