LA taps half their water from Owens Valley, killing an otherwise thriving agricultural community. Hollywood uses the local hills as a backdrop.
Lone Pine is the gateway to the highest of the High Sierras, with peaks such as Mt. Whitney exceeding the tallest in the contiguous United States.
This video touches on the bittersweet affair (albeit more bitter than sweet) between Los Angeles and Owens Valley, and ends with an unsuccessful, but breathtaking hike up the Mount Whitney Trail.
Construction of the Owens Valley Project (the Los Angeles Aqueduct) began in the first decade of the 20th century. It was considered one of the engineering marvels of the era, rivaling the Panama Canal. (The movie "Chinatown" is based on the project but reset in the 1930s. The movie version is highly fictionalized. See S. Erie, "Beyond Chinatown" (Stanford U Press, 2006).

A short explanation of the expansion of Los Angeles and the destruction of the Owens River and Valley. Many Paiute Indians lived in Yosemite and Hetch Hetchy but were pushed out as Yosemite became a park and Hetch Hetchy was dammed and the water diverted to San Francisco. Many Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiutes were swindled out of their water rights around these and other ancestral areas for the new gold, water. Many Paiutes who were forced out of Yosemite, Hetch Hetchy and the Mono Lake area and were promised farm land around Owens Lake. Later after some Paiutes settled with the Owens Valley Paiutes this water was taken for the expansion of the City of Los Angeles. Paiutes used to irrigate the area for taboose and wai, native plants that we Paiutes used to cultivate and eat. Clara (Hess) Rambeau, Yosemite-Mono Lake and Owen's Valley Paiute. Granddaughter of Paiute Young Charlie and Great-Granddaughter of Paiute Captain Jim of Bridgeport and Hetch Hetchy area speaks about the Native American Paiute angle to this story. Paiute means "Water Ute", but we are Indians without water.

This is a segment from a new documentary series by WaterSupply.Com, and produced by Unoque.Com.
This is Episode One of Series One on Water Resources.
The documentary will explore the history of large metropolitan regions acquisition of water resources, from great distances. We will compare the monetary costs, collateral, social, and environmental damages imposed by those practices.
We will then compare the opportunities of more recent technologies to provide water resources for these metropolitan regions in a manner eliminating distant water resources.

The Owens Valley River flows through Bishop, California on it's way to feed a thirsty Los Angeles. This is a 12 mile section of meandering slow moving water that I like to float on occasion. My friend Keith and I did this float in 1998. It was the last Time Keith went to the Owens Valley with me because he died a year later in an ultralight aircraft accident. We used to go up there a couple of times a year to fish, camp, float and fly hang gliders. I miss his friendship and will never foget him. We had a lot of fun together.

The Owens Valley River flows through Bishop, California on it's way to feed a thirsty Los Angeles. This is a 12 mile section of meandering slow moving water that I like to float on occasion. My friend Keith and I did this float in 1998. It was the last Time Keith went to the Owens Valley with me because he died a year later in an ultralight aircraft accident. We used to go up there a couple of times a year to fish, camp, float and fly hang gliders. I miss his friendship and will never foget him. We had a lot of fun together.

Included are cultural displays, Memorial Hall paying tribute to Native American Veterans and their families, Environmental Displays, and collections of artifacts, historical archives and media. We also have a wonderful Native Garden and a Walking Trail through the tribe’s COSA (Conservation Open Space Area). Our Museum Gift Shop offers visitors the opportunity to purchase arts and crafts as keepsakes made by local tribal artisans as well as publications that pertain to native culture. The Museum and Gift shop are great resource for researchers and general public.

"Saving Payahüüpü: The Owens Valley Solar Story" explores the land, people, history, and future of the Owens Valley as its community members work to build broad-based grassroots support at home and in Los Angeles to protect the natural, historic, and cultural resources of their valley.
"Saving Payahüüpü" focuses on the ways in which a 1200 acre industrial scale solar energy development project currently being proposed by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power would cause severe and irreparable harm to Paiute cultural sites and to the integrity of the Manzanar National Historic Site located in the Owens Valley.
