David John "Dave" Matthews (born January 9, 1967) is a South African-born American singer-songwriter, musician and actor, best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist for the Dave Matthews Band. Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and moved to Westchester County, New York at the age of 2. Matthews mainly plays acoustic guitar, which he started playing at age 9.

From 1991 to 2003, Matthews predominantly focused on songwriting and performing with the Dave Matthews Band, which he started in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991. Since then, he has also done various solo performances and produced other records. During the period from 2000 to 2010, his band sold more tickets and earned more money than any other act in North America. The band's most recent album, Away from the World, released in 2012, made them the only group to have six consecutive studio albums debut at number one on the Billboard charts.

Tim Reynolds

Tim Reynolds (born 15 December 1957 in Wiesbaden, Germany) is a Grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist known as both a solo artist and as a lead guitarist for the Dave Matthews Band. One reviewer has declared Reynolds 'an under-rated master'.

Reynolds plays the guitar, piano, sitar, drums, violin, bass, keyboards, ethnic percussive instruments, solo djembe, harp, uses drum machines for special effects, and sings, although his performances are primarily instrumental rock music. As well as being the founding member of the band TR3, he is one of the musicians who performed at "Miller's", in Charlottesville Virginia, befriending and encouraging the bartender, a young Dave Matthews, to form a band of his own, introducing him to local musicians, several of whom make up the Dave Matthews Band. While Reynolds declined the offer to join as an official member, he recorded and toured as a sideman with the Dave Matthews Band from its inception until late 1998, rejoining them as a permanent member in June 2008. He often tours with Dave Matthews as an acoustic duo, in addition to performing as a member of Dave Matthews & Friends.

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds or Dave and Tim is a musical act composed of Dave Matthews, member of Dave Matthews Band, and Tim Reynolds, member of TR3 and Dave Matthews Band.

History

Matthews and Reynolds met in Charlottesville, Virginia, while Matthews was a bartender at Miller's. Reynolds encouraged Matthews' musical growth. Matthews wanted to join Reynolds' band TR3, but Reynolds told him to form his own band.

Matthews went on to form Dave Matthews Band (DMB). Reynolds has occasionally joined the band in the studio, as on the albums Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash, Before These Crowded Streets, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, Away from the World, and as a touring member of DMB.

By 1993, as a side project, Matthews and Reynolds performed several acoustic set shows, first on April 22, 1993.

From this point onward, they always played acoustic, and they always played every year together (with the exception of the following years : 2000, 2001 and 2002), whether as Dave and Tim, Matthews guesting with TR3, Reynolds guesting with Dave Matthews Band, or Matthews and Reynolds playing in the band Dave Matthews and Friends.

Ants Marching

"Ants Marching" is a song by American rock group Dave Matthews Band. It was released in September 1995 as the second single from their debut album Under the Table and Dreaming. It reached #18 on the Alternative chart and on the mainstream rock chart as well. The song was considered a successful, hit single. A different recording of it was included on their prior album, Remember Two Things. This version was significantly longer, clocking in at 6:08. According to DMBAlmanac.com, the song is possibly one of DMB's best known songs, and Dave Matthews described it as being "our anthem." Dave Mathews wrote the music and lyrics prior to its first performance in 1991.

The song is centered on the idea that people get caught up in the monotony of their everyday lives and forget to focus on what is truly important. The metaphor used is that people are like marching ants in the line, "All the little ants are marching, red and black antennae waving, they all do it the same, they all do it the same way."
