This is a time lapse compilation covering about 5 hours of the California Zephyr ride from Chicago, IL to San Francisco, CA (total of 51 hours) The video represents only parts of the ride, shown on the map between stations.
Mainly Iowa and Illinois plains, crossing the Mississippi, sunrise coming into Denver, climbing the Rockies and tunnels district, Colorado River for about 200 miles, sunrise somewhere either in Utah or Nevada :) Coming down the Sierras, Tahoe National Forest. Enjoy in HD :)

Since childhood, one of my dreams has been to ride Amtrak train #5, the westbound “California Zephyr” on the entire route, from Chicago, Illinois, to Emeryville, California. On July 29th, I finally was able to fulfill that dream, with a trip out to California for my niece’s birthday.
This section of the route, between Chicago and Denver, is on the BNSF Railway’s tracks, which were formerly operated by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, and later, the Burlington Northern. On the day that I traveled, the train wound up leaving around 50 minutes late, as we were waiting for Amtrak’s westbound “Lake Shore Limited” (train #49/449) from Boston & New York, which had been running several hours behind schedule, and had around 50 passengers connecting to the “California Zephyr.” Despite the best efforts of the crew to make up time, in the end, we wound up arriving in Denver, on a cold and dreary morning about 4 hours late, due largely to freight train interference, and “slow orders” along the line.
Between Chicago and Denver, the train makes stops in: Naperville, IL, Princeton, IL, Galesburg, IL
Burlington, IA, Mount Pleasant, IA, Ottumwa, IA, Osceola, IA, Creston, IA, Omaha, NE
Lincoln, NE, Hastings, NE, Holdredge, NE, McCook, NE, and, Ft. Morgan, CO.

This is a condensed video showing the progress of AMTRAK's "California Zephyr" train from Chicago to Emeryville, near San Franciso, in late December, 2016. I edited down about four hours of video I took to and hour and a half, but pretty much everything of interest is represented in the version presented here. I think people interested in taking this great trip will get a good feeling of what they will see during the journey.
I have other videos about what it is like to ride an AMTRAK Superliner train, especially what to expect in a Roomette in a sleeper car on such a train. Accordingly I have NOT included that kind of information in this video.....it is just about the California Zephyr route and scenery.
In this video, you will see the departure from Chicago's Union Station, passing across northern Illinois, then continuing the next morning near Denver, Colorado, then the scenic passage over the Rocky Mountains, then continuing the next morning near Reno, Nevada, with the crossing of the Sierra Nevada mountains and finally the flat transit to the Bay Area and the arrival in Emeryville.

Since childhood, one of my dreams has been to ride Amtrak train #5, the westbound “California Zephyr” on the entire route, from Chicago, Illinois, to Emeryville, California. On July 29th, I finally was able to fulfill that dream, with a trip out to California for my niece’s birthday. This section of the route, between Chicago and Denver, is on the BNSF Railway’s tracks, which were formerly operated by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, and later, the Burlington Northern. On the day that I traveled, the train wound up leaving around 50 minutes late, as we were waiting for Amtrak’s westbound “Lake Shore Limited” (train #49/449) from Boston & New York, which had been running several hours behind schedule, and had around 50 passengers connecting to the “California Zephyr.” Despite the best ... -

This is a condensed video showing the progress of AMTRAK's "California Zephyr" train from Chicago to Emeryville, near San Franciso, in late December, 2016. I edited down about four hours of video I took to and hour and a half, but pretty much everything of interest is represented in the version presented here. I think people interested in taking this great trip will get a good feeling of what they will see during the journey.
I have other videos about what it is like to ride an AMTRAK Superliner train, especially what to expect in a Roomette in a sleeper car on such a train. Accordingly I have NOT included that kind of information in this video.....it is just about the California Zephyr route and scenery.

The California Zephyr was operated by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad from Chicago to Denver, Colorado, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad between Denver and Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Western Pacific Railroad from Salt Lake City to Oakland, California. Trains ran with cars of mixed ownership; cars cycled in and out of the consists for service, repairs, and varying passenger loads with the seasons.
The first train was christened in San Francisco by Eleanor Parker while California Lieutenant Governor Goodwin Knight, Mayor of San Francisco Elmer Robinson, and WP President Harry A. Mitchell looked on. For the inaugural run in 1949, every female passenger on the train was given a corsage of "silver" and orange orchids that were specially flown in from Hilo, Hawaii. The women who worked as car hostesses on this train were known as "Zephyrettes."
The train traversed the route's 2,525 mi (4,064 km) in 2½ days. .

Zephyr is a three-piece band from the Natal Midlands made up of Colin Arbuckle and the brothers Liam and Jeremy Mathias. The band will be performing at the Botanical Gardens on 20 July at the Hillside Concert. The band has played in a number of towns and cities - from Durban to Newcastle, Margate to Sodwana, often featuring in and around the Midlands. They make regular appearances at The Forgotten Falls in Howick, and at the Red Door in Pietermaritzburg and have opened for bands like Dan Patlansky, Celtis, Syd Kitchen and Roly Struckmeyer. -

On 17 -24 March the British Council Russia has organized the UK Film Industry Inward Mission to Moscow with leading British film producers meeting 70 key Russian producers, TV broadcasters, directors, agents, distributors, and state film authorities.
The aim of the visit is to provide networking opportunities and to give the UK professionals an overview of the Russian film industry with the long-term perspective for joint collaborations (co-production, sales, educational projects, talent import).

The westbound "California Zephyr" enters Agency, Iowa with a horn show from the engineer on April 22, 2016. Unusually, Amtrak #5 has an old heritage baggage behind its locomotives this evening. These cars had been replaced with new Viewliner II ones several months ago. This heritage baggage car, AMTK 1716, was originally built by the Budd Company as the coach ATSF 2857 for the Santa Fe Railway. Happy Spring, everyone. Basically, this is my first video of 2016. I haven't uploaded anything recently so I though this video would be awesome to upload to start the year off right. Back on October 25, 2015, it was on a Sunday, Amtrak GE P42DC #74 and AMTK #20 were leading Train #6 at Lisle Metra Station. However, the Viewliner II Baggage cars are now common within the consists of most long distance Amtrak Trains. This video was recorded on a CRAPPY, and YES, I said it! Back on October 25, 2015, it was on a Sunday, Amtrak GE P42DC #74 and AMTK #20 were leading Train #6 at Lisle Metra Station. However, the Viewliner II Baggage cars are now common within the consists of most long distance Amtrak Trains. This video was recorded on a CRAPPY, and YES, I said it! On a Crappy LG Tribute 2 by Boost mobile. WORST CAMERA QUALITY ON ALL THE PHONES I'VE OBTAINED.

A tour of the Amtrak California Zephyr as it travels from Truckee (North Lake Tahoe) to San Francisco in late November, 2012. Video inside and outside of the train, including time lapse of the entire trip from multiple angles with instrumentation (speed, elevation, heading, etc). Probably best watched in full screen mode. Now with Closed Captions. I'd be curious to hear from anyone who uses the Closed Captions, as to how well they worked for you, anything I could improve, etc. I am somewhat hampered by YouTube's Closed Captioning, which is somewhat buggy -- it often doesn't display italics when I've told it to, and I can't control the positioning. -

My third & final installment of my "California Zephyr" videos takes us the final 830 miles from Salt Lake City to Emeryville, CA. The "California Zephyr" at around 11 pm, and leave a half hour later. However, we were running about 6 hours late, arriving at around 5 am. Despite the incovenience, it, nevertheless, afforded a lovely view of the Wasatch Mountains at sunrise. "California Zephyr" Trip, Part 2: Riding through the Rockies
This segment of my trip on the "California Zephyr" takes us between Denver & Grand Junction, CO. Leaving the BNSF Railway behind, the "California Zephyr" goes on to Union Pacific rails, actually, on the rest of its run to Emeryville, CA. Heading out of Denver, the train makes its way through "Little Ten" and "Big Ten" curve, on its way up the Front Range, continuing on up to the 6.2 Moffat Tunnel, which goes under the Continental Divide. West of Moffat Tunnel, the train then runs parallel to the Colorado River, through Fraser, Byers, Gore, Red & Glenwood Canyons. Now with Closed Captions. I'd be curious to hear from anyone who uses the Closed Captions, as to how well they worked for you, anything I could improve, etc. I am somewhat hampered by YouTube's Closed Captioning, which is somewhat buggy -- it often doesn't display italics when I've told it to, and I can't control the positioning.

My third & final installment of my "California Zephyr" videos takes us the final 830 miles from Salt Lake City to Emeryville, CA. The "California Zephyr" at around 11 pm, and leave a half hour later. However, we were running about 6 hours late, arriving at around 5 am. Despite the incovenience, it, nevertheless, afforded a lovely view of the Wasatch Mountains at sunrise.
The westbound "California Zephyr," leaving Salt Lake City, travels over Union Pacific rails the rest of the way to Emeryville. Skirting the south end of the Great Salt Lake, we pass through the Bonneville Salt Flats, before crossing into Nevada.
In Nevada, we cut across the desert, before climbing over the Toano Mountains via Arnold's Loop and Silver Zone Pass, and passing through the Goshute Valley and skirting the Ruby Mountains. At Wells, NV, we meet with the ex Central Pacific (now Union Pacific) tracks from Odgen, UT, and not too far after that, at Deeth, we pick up the Humboldt River, and run parallel to it, past our station stops in Elko, and Winnemauca, to Lovelock, NV. At Lovelock, we cut across the Lohantan Velly, also known as the Forty Mile Desert, where the "California Zephyr" was involved in an accident in 2011 which killed 6 people (semi-collided with the train) to Reno. We wound up stopping in Sparks, NV, after crossing the Virginia Mountains, to drop off some Union Pacific crew
At Reno, we begin the climb over the Sierra Nevadas, parallel to the Truckee River, ascending to Donner Lake, and passing over Donner Pass. Shortly after cresting Donner Pass, we got stuck behind a slow freight train, which eventually broke down, leaving us to sit a few miles out of Colfax for about 45 minutes, while 2 other eastbound freight trains passed, so we could use the eastbound track to pass the freight train, although, I don't recall switching over. After Colfax, and reaching the foot of the Sierra Nevadas, our engineer did everything in his power to make up time, and after making stops in Roseville, Sacramento, Davis, Martinez & Richmond, we finally arrived in Emeryville at 11:30 pm, 7 hours & 20 minutes behind the scheduled arrival time of 4:10 pm.

Anschließend führt die Reise durch den "Brotkorb der Nation", den Mittleren Westen. In Omaha besuchen wir das Theater, wo einst Henry Fonda seine Karriere begann. This segment of my trip on the "California Zephyr" takes us between Denver & Grand Junction, CO. Leaving the BNSF Railway behind, the "California Zephyr" goes on to Union Pacific rails, actually, on the rest of its run to Emeryville, CA. Heading out of Denver, the train makes its way through "Little Ten" and "Big Ten" curve, on its way up the Front Range, continuing on up to the 6.2 Moffat Tunnel, which goes under the Continental Divide. West of Moffat Tunnel, the train then runs parallel to the Colorado River, through Fraser, Byers, Gore, Red & Glenwood Canyons.
Usually, the train actually makes it all the way into Utah before sunset, but, we were already running about 4 hours late out of Denver, and then were held up by freight trains for nearly and hour & a half at Winter Park-Fraser, including a train that reportedly had a couple of cars derail, and slow orders, due to concerns about mudslides, as it had been raining almost continuously for the previous several days, so, it was past 10 pm by the time that we arrived in Grand Junction, and past sunset. Regrettably, also, as can be seen in the video, it was a fairly cloudy & foggy day, with the result that you couldn't see any of the tops of the various mountains, as we approached the Continental Divide.
Between Denver & Grand Junction, the train makes stops in Fraser-Winter Park, Granby & Grand Junction.
