Guy Cassiers regisseert deze bewerking met een negenkoppige cast, samengesteld uit de ensembles van Toneelhuis en Toneelgroep Amsterdam. Het is de eerste coproductie in een reeks van vier, gepland tussen 2014 en 2016. Voor zijn bewerking van Hamlet duikt Tom Lanoye in de psychologie van de adolescentie. De ‘halfwas’ Hamlet voelt zich verpletterd door de wereld van de volwassenen. Zo ontstaat een personage dat weifelt tussen zelfhaat en zelfoverschatting, tussen minachting voor zichzelf en minachting voor de ‘onzuivere’ wereld. De getormenteerde monologen van Hamlet zijn hartenkreet en uitdrijving, aanklacht en bezwering tegelijk. Hamlet raakt niet alleen verstrikt in de netten van de waanzin op zich, maar ook in de theatraliteit waarmee hij zichzelf ensceneert. Hij is een mens zoals wij allemaal: inconsequent, meerlagig, dubbelslachtig, ambigu. Cassiers met cette adaptation en scène avec neuf comédiens de la Toneelhuis et du Toneelgroep Amsterdam. Il s’agit du premier partenariat d’une série de quatre productions que les deux maisons ont prévu de coproduire entre 2014 et 2016. Pour son adaptation d’Hamlet, Tom Lanoye se plonge dans la psychologie de l’adolescence. Ce « blanc-bec » de Hamlet se sent écrasé par le monde des adultes. C’est ainsi que naît un personnage qui oscille entre la haine de soi et la présomption, entre l’autodépréciation et le dégoût du monde « impur ». Les monologues tourmentés de Hamlet relèvent à la fois du cri du cœur et de l’exorcisme, du réquisitoire et de l’incantation. Guy Cassiers is directing this adaptation with a cast of nine from Toneelhuis and Toneelgroep Amsterdam. It is the first in a series of four coproductions between these two theatre companies, planned for between 2014 and 2016. For his adaptation of Hamlet Tom Lanoye explores the psychology of adolescence. The ‘juvenile’ Hamlet feels crushed by the adult world. A picture is painted of a character who fluctuates between self-hatred and inflated ego, between contempt for himself and contempt for an imperfect world. Hamlet’s tormented monologues are a cri de coeur and exorcism, an indictment and adjuration rolled into one. Hamlet becomes entangled in the nets of madness, as well as in the theatricality with which he stage-manages himself.
