'The Tower of London, a Historical Romance', a popular novel from 1840, fed a lot of the untruths surrounding Jane's imprisonment. The famous painting of the Execution of Lady Jane Grey, by Paul Delaroche, became a fascinating focal point for this vast interest in Lady Jane, but how accurate is his depiction? Despite the location and costuming being wildly inaccurate, Delaroche captures the essence of that event. The clips inserted are from the film 'Lady Jane' -- (another very inaccurate version of her story) however the execution was completed with some accuracy. Lady Jane Grey (married name Lady Jane Dudley; 1536/1537 – 12 February 1554), also known as The Nine Days' Queen, was an English noblewoman and de facto monarch of England from 10 July until 19 July 1553. She was subsequently executed. The great-granddaughter of Henry VII through his younger daughter Mary, Jane was a first cousin once removed of Edward VI.
In May 1553 Jane was married to Lord Guildford Dudley, a younger son of Edward's chief minister, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. When the 15-year-old King lay dying in June 1553, he nominated Jane as successor to the Crown in his will, thus subverting the claims of his half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth under the Third Succession Act. During her short reign, Jane resided in the Tower of London. She became a prisoner there when the Privy Council decided to change sides and proclaim Mary as Queen on 19 July 1553.
She was convicted of high treason in November 1553, though her life was initially spared.
Wyatt's rebellion in January and February 1554 against Queen Mary's plans of a Spanish match led to her execution at the age of 16 or 17, and that of her husband.

PRINTS NOW AVAILABLE! http://www.cafepress.com/maludwigworks #Project requested by user/clpeucker85 One of history's most tragic victims of her own heritage, Lady Jane Grey, famously dubbed "The Nine Days' Queen", was the great-granddaughter of King Henry VII by his younger daughter Mary, and was cousin to King Edward VI. King Edward VI, at the age of fifteen, would never live to adulthood, much less produce an heir to the throne to succeed him. His late father, King Henry VIII, decreed that Edward's half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth would be able to claim the throne as written in his "Third Succession Act" which overturned the law's assertion that Mary and Elizabeth were illegitimate and not eligible to seek the crown. In the event that his own children died childless, King Henry VIII gave provisions that would allow the throne to be passed to heirs of his younger sister, Mary Tudor, which included Lady Jane Grey. Edward VI, being of Protestant mould, did not welcome the idea of his half-sister Mary, who was Catholic, taking over the throne, and with the possible influence of the Duke of Northumberland, Edward supervised the writing of a draft of his will which named his Protestant cousin, Lady Jane Grey, as his successor to the throne, trumping his father's will which named Mary, and later Elizabeth, as the rightful heirs to the throne. The legality of Edward's will was doubtful, a fact which proved to seal Lady Jane's fate when Edward died July 6, 1553 and Jane found herself the unwilling recipient of the royal crown at the age of 15-16. Lady Jane, who was considered one of the most learned ladies of her day, was certainly intelligent enough to realize what accepting the crown would mean, and by all accounts, she refused it until at last it was shoved upon her with the threat of obligation. She was never easy in her mind about the transaction, and she had every right to be worried. Rather than have her husband Lord Guilford Dudley be crowned as her King, she immediately tried to protect him by suggesting he be made Duke of Clarence instead. The Duke of Northumberland, who had quasi-orchestrated the crowning of Lady Jane as a view to capture Lady Mary to prevent her from gathering supporters and making a claim to the throne, had to leave London on official business. In his absence, Lady Mary, wasting no time, began to rally supporters which included the Privy Council that had previously pledged their allegiance to Lady Jane. The council proclaimed Lady Mary as the rightful queen and Lady Jane was immediately imprisoned in the Tower of London under the charges of usurping the throne and high treason. When Northumberland returned, he was executed. On February 12, 1554, Lady Jane Grey and her husband Lord Guilford Dudley was executed by beheading. She was barely 16-17 at the time of her death. *An official portrait of Lady Jane Grey has never been confirmed, though many are suspected. *Lady Jane's appearance has been described as short, thin, graceful, with small features, a well-shaped nose, red lips, beautiful smile and sharp teeth, arched eyebrows which are darker than her nearly-red hair, a fair though freckled complexion, and sparkling reddish-brown eyes. *This restoration was created by "back-referencing" known portraits of Lady Jane's mother, father, and sisters and using the average of all of their features to construct Lady Jane's appearance. With any guess, it is only approximate. -

A short video regarding the Execution of Lady Jane Grey on 12th February 1554, and the historical controversy that has surrounded it. 'The Tower of London, a Historical Romance', a popular novel from 1840, fed a lot of the untruths surrounding Jane's imprisonment. The famous painting of the Execution of Lady Jane Grey, by Paul Delaroche, became a fascinating focal point for this vast interest in Lady Jane, but how accurate is his depiction? Despite the location and costuming being wildly inaccurate, Delaroche captures the essence of that event. The clips inserted are from the film 'Lady Jane' -- (another very inaccurate version of her story) however the execution was completed with some accuracy. Nine Days a Queen is a much forgotten, and little seen early British film depicting the tragic life of Lady Jane Grey. Also known as 'Tudor Rose', the film follows the events after King Henry VIII's death -- the change of succession prior to the death of Edward VI, the brief 'reign' of Jane Grey, and her eventual fall and end. Nova Pilbeam playes Jane, with a typically 30's cheery smile, and a young John Mills plays Guilford Dudley. The film 'Lady Jane' in the 80's borrowed a lot of the romantic inaccuracies began in this movie, between Jane and Guilford. 10th July 1553: Lady Jane Grey becomes queen of England
On the 10th July 1553, Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed queen of England after her first cousin once removed, the 15-year-old King Edward VI, died of an unknown respiratory problem. However, the Privy Council proclaimed Edward’s older sister Mary as queen just nine days later and imprisoned Jane in the Tower of London. She was tried on charges of high treason, found guilty, and beheaded the following February. The Third Act of Succession was passed by Parliament in July 1543 and restored Henry’s daughters – Mary and Elizabeth – to the line of succession after his son Edward and any children he might have. Jane was the grandniece of Henry VIII through her grandmother, Mary Tudor, Queen of France, who was Henry’s sister. The Third Act of Succession stated that the throne would pass to her line... -

Lady Jane Grey (1536/1537 – 12 February 1554(1554-02-12)), also known as Lady Jane Dudley or The Nine Days' Queen, was an English noblewoman and de facto monarch of England from 10 July until 19 July 1553. The great-granddaughter of Henry VII through his younger daughter Mary, Jane was a first cousin once removed of Edward VI. In May 1553, she was married to Lord Guildford Dudley, a younger son of Edward's chief minister, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. When the 15-year-old king lay dying in June 1553, he nominated Jane as successor to the Crown in his will, thus subverting the claims of his half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth under the Third Succession Act. Jane was imprisoned in the Tower of London when the Privy Council decided to change sides and proclaim Mary as queen on 19 July 1553... -

'The Tower of London, a Historical Romance', a popular novel from 1840, fed a lot of the untruths surrounding Jane's imprisonment. The famous painting of the Execution of Lady Jane Grey, by Paul Delaroche, became a fascinating focal point for this vast interest in Lady Jane, but how accurate is his depiction? Despite the location and costuming being wildly inaccurate, Delaroche captures the essence of that event. The clips inserted are from the film 'Lady Jane' -- (another very inaccurate version of her story) however the execution was completed with some accuracy. One of history's most tragic victims of her own heritage, Lady Jane Grey, famously dubbed "The Nine Days' Queen", was the great-granddaughter of King Henry VII by his younger daughter Mary, and was cousin to King Edward VI.
King Edward VI, at the age of fifteen, would never live to adulthood, much less produce an heir to the throne to succeed him. His late father, King Henry VIII, decreed that Edward's half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth would be able to claim the throne as written in his "Third Succession Act" which overturned the law's assertion that Mary and Elizabeth were illegitimate and not eligible to seek the crown.
In the event that his own children died childless, King Henry VIII gave provisions that would allow the throne to be passed to heirs of his younger sister, Mary Tudor, which included Lady Jane Grey.
Edward VI, being of Protestant mould, did not welcome the idea of his half-sister Mary, who was Catholic, taking over the throne, and with the possible influence of the Duke of Northumberland, Edward supervised the writing of a draft of his will which named his Protestant cousin, Lady Jane Grey, as his successor to the throne, trumping his father's will which named Mary, and later Elizabeth, as the rightful heirs to the throne. The legality of Edward's will was doubtful, a fact which proved to seal Lady Jane's fate when Edward died July 6, 1553 and Jane found herself the unwilling recipient of the royal crown at the age of 15-16.
Lady Jane, who was considered one of the most learned ladies of her day, was certainly intelligent enough to realize what accepting the crown would mean, and by all accounts, she refused it until at last it was shoved upon her with the threat of obligation. She was never easy in her mind about the transaction, and she had every right to be worried. Rather than have her husband Lord Guilford Dudley be crowned as her King, she immediately tried to protect him by suggesting he be made Duke of Clarence instead.
The Duke of Northumberland, who had quasi-orchestrated the crowning of Lady Jane as a view to capture Lady Mary to prevent her from gathering supporters and making a claim to the throne, had to leave London on official business. In his absence, Lady Mary, wasting no time, began to rally supporters which included the Privy Council that had previously pledged their allegiance to Lady Jane. The council proclaimed Lady Mary as the rightful queen and Lady Jane was immediately imprisoned in the Tower of London under the charges of usurping the throne and high treason. When Northumberland returned, he was executed.
On February 12, 1554, Lady Jane Grey and her husband Lord Guilford Dudley was executed by beheading. She was barely 16-17 at the time of her death.
*An official portrait of Lady Jane Grey has never been confirmed, though many are suspected.
*Lady Jane's appearance has been described as short, thin, graceful, with small features, a well-shaped nose, red lips, beautiful smile and sharp teeth, arched eyebrows which are darker than her nearly-red hair, a fair though freckled complexion, and sparkling reddish-brown eyes.
*This restoration was created by "back-referencing" known portraits of Lady Jane's mother, father, and sisters and using the average of all of their features to construct Lady Jane's appearance. With any guess, it is only approximate.

His late father, King Henry VIII, decreed that Edward's half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth would be able to claim the throne as written in his "Third Succession Act" which overturned the law's assertion that Mary and Elizabeth were illegitimate and not eligible to seek the crown.
In the event that his own children died childless, King Henry VIII gave provisions that would allow the throne to be passed to heirs of his younger sister, Mary Tudor, which included Lady Jane Grey.
Edward VI, being of Protestant mould, did not welcome the idea of his half-sister Mary, who was Catholic, taking over the throne, and with the possible influence of the Duke of Northumberland, Edward supervised the writing of a draft of his will which named his Protestant cousin, Lady Jane Grey, as his successor to the throne, trumping his father's will which named Mary, and later Elizabeth, as the rightful heirs to the throne. The legality of Edward's will was doubtful, a fact which proved to seal Lady Jane's fate when Edward died July 6, 1553 and Jane found herself the unwilling recipient of the royal crown at the age of 15-16.
Lady Jane, who was considered one of the most learned ladies of her day, was certainly intelligent enough to realize what accepting the crown would mean, and by all accounts, she refused it until at last it was shoved upon her with the threat of obligation. She was never easy in her mind about the transaction, and she had every right to be worried. Rather than have her husband Lord Guilford Dudley be crowned as her King, she immediately tried to protect him by suggesting he be made Duke of Clarence instead.
The Duke of Northumberland, who had quasi-orchestrated the crowning of Lady Jane as a view to capture Lady Mary to prevent her from gathering supporters and making a claim to the throne, had to leave London on official business. In his absence, Lady Mary, wasting no time, began to rally supporters which included the Privy Council that had previously pledged their allegiance to Lady Jane. The council proclaimed Lady Mary as the rightful queen and Lady Jane was immediately imprisoned in the Tower of London under the charges of usurping the throne and high treason. When Northumberland returned, he was executed.
On February 12, 1554, Lady Jane Grey and her husband Lord Guilford Dudley was executed by beheading. She was barely 16-17 at the time of her death.
*An official portrait of Lady Jane Grey has never been confirmed, though many are suspected.
*Lady Jane's appearance has been described as short, thin, graceful, with small features, a well-shaped nose, red lips, beautiful smile and sharp teeth, arched eyebrows which are darker than her nearly-red hair, a fair though freckled complexion, and sparkling reddish-brown eyes.
*This restoration was created by "back-referencing" known portraits of Lady Jane's mother, father, and sisters and using the average of all of their features to construct Lady Jane's appearance. With any guess, it is only approximate.

Also known as 'Tudor Rose', the film follows the events after King Henry VIII's death -- the change of succession prior to the death of Edward VI, the brief 'reign' of Jane Grey, and her eventual fall and end. Nova Pilbeam playes Jane, with a typically 30's cheery smile, and a young John Mills plays Guilford Dudley. The film 'Lady Jane' in the 80's borrowed a lot of the romantic inaccuracies began in this movie, between Jane and Guilford. Following in the shadows of the much better know 'Private Life of Henry VIII'; the film boasts far superior settings (for its time!). It is, however, widely inaccurate. A lot of the actors would have first appeared in silent films, and the oversized gestures are still apparent... take a look at Queen Mary with Jane in the Tower! (Part 3).

On the 10th July 1553, Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed queen of England after her first cousin once removed, the 15-year-old King Edward VI, died of an unknown respiratory problem. However, the Privy Council proclaimed Edward’s older sister Mary as queen just nine days later and imprisoned Jane in the Tower of London. She was tried on charges of high treason, found guilty, and beheaded the following February.
The Third Act of Succession was passed by Parliament in July 1543 and restored Henry’s daughters – Mary and Elizabeth – to the line of succession after his son Edward and any children he might have. Jane was the grandniece of Henry VIII through her grandmother, Mary Tudor, Queen of France, who was Henry’s sister. The Third Act of Succession stated that the throne would pass to her line if his own children did not have any descendants.
Despite all Henry’s planning, Edward VI chose to restrict the succession further. As he lay on his death bed, he nominated the Protestant Jane Grey as his successor rather than his older Catholic sister Mary. Historians disagree over how much influence Edward’s chief minister, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland and the father of Jane’s husband Lord Guildford Dudley, had on this decision.
Whatever the role of Northumberland in the succession, when he left London after Edward’s death to intercept his sister Mary the Privy Council switched their allegiance and proclaimed Mary as queen on 19th July. Parliament later declared Jane a usurper, and she was found guilty of treason for having signed documents as "Jane the Queen".

I borrowed a friend’s camera to make it; it’s shot entirely by me. It was an idea I’d had for a long time; I only really got motivated because I thought Zena would do a good job, and that brought out the director in me.
Almost every line of dialogue you here is improvised; there was absolutely no script. I just knew the scenes we needed. I would, before hitting record, throw the actors (random friends of mine) the idea they needed to convey. Occasionally I got more specific, but mostly it was “Prompt, shoot, notes, prompt again, shoot again, notes again” until I got what I needed.
The end result got put in limbo as my life grew steadily more busy, but I’m happy to finally release this cut. It’s not the “SUPAR HIGH PRODUCTION VALUE SPECIAL EFFECTS WOW” type of short most directors release these days. It certainly isn’t “viral.”
But I’m very proud of it as an experiment in shooting from the hip to tell a story, which is exactly what it was meant to be.
The cast, with the exception of Zena chosen via their availability, is as follows:
Zena Grey, an actual actress (when she’s not editing together passion projects, animating or doing whatever other mysterious things she does in her spare time), who in reality is NOTHING like the Borderline Personality manic pixie she portrays in this. Her performance weirdly grows in magnitudes if you’ve ever actually met her.
Hadrian Belove, not a performer of any kind, but rather the raconteur behind Los Angeles’ wonderful Cinefamily theater.
Russell Henson and Maggie Levin, people I barely knew at all, and am now, three years later, quite fond of; I asked them to be in a movie, randomly, and they said yes. I believe this was our first time hanging out.
Anna DeHaan, an actress from Chronicle, who did her role with less than thirty minutes notice as we walked around the Hollywoodland Estates.
The film was edited by Kim Kruse, who edited Death and Return, and then again years later by Andy Holton, my regular production partner from Animal Battles, The Slap, etc. The effects were all the handiwork of the spectacular Mike Diva, a great director in his own right who was gracious enough to give his time and ideas to this weird little thing.
And of course Evan Goldman, who wrote the film’s cute little end ditty.

Elizabeth I (7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603) was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. Sometimes called The Virgin Queen, Gloriana or Good Queen Bess, the childless Elizabeth was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII by second wife, Anne Boleyn, who was executed two and a half years after Elizabeth's birth. Anne's marriage to Henry VIII was annulled, and Elizabeth was declared illegitimate. Her half-brother, Edward VI, ruled until his death in 1553, bequeathing the crown to Lady Jane Grey and ignoring the claims of his two half-sisters, Elizabeth and the Roman Catholic Mary, in spite of statute law to the contrary. However, Edward's will was set aside and Mary became queen, deposing Lady Jane Grey. During Mary's reign, Elizabeth was imprisoned for nearly a year on suspicion of supporting Protestant rebels.
In 1558, Elizabeth succeeded her half-sister to the throne, and she set out to rule by good counsel.[1] She depended heavily on a group of trusted advisers, led by William Cecil, Baron Burghley. One of her first actions as queen was the establishment of an English Protestant church, of which she became the Supreme Governor. This Elizabethan Religious Settlement later evolved into today's Church of England. It was expected that Elizabeth would marry and produce an heir to continue the Tudor line. She never did, despite numerous courtships. As she grew older, Elizabeth became famous for her virginity. A cult grew up around her which was celebrated in the portraits, pageants, and literature of the day.
In government, Elizabeth was more moderate than her father and half-siblings had been.[2] One of her mottoes was "video et taceo" ("I see, and say nothing").[3] In religion she was relatively tolerant, avoiding systematic persecution. After 1570, when the pope declared her illegitimate and released her subjects from obedience to her, several conspiracies threatened her life. All plots were defeated, however, with the help of her ministers' secret service. Elizabeth was cautious in foreign affairs, manoeuvring between the major powers of France and Spain. She only half-heartedly supported a number of ineffective, poorly-resourced military campaigns in the Netherlands, France, and Ireland. However, by the mid-1580s, war with Spain could no longer be avoided. When Spain finally decided to attempt to conquer England in 1588, the failure of the Spanish Armada associated her with one of the greatest military victories in English history.
