Blaqstarr is back! We've dusted off 4 of the heaviest unreleased tracks from the Supastarr era here and brought them into the light with brand new mixing and mastering. You might have come across these over the years but these new versions are super crisp and loud, doing justice to four classic tracks that were previously only available as low quality mp3s. Notes from Diplo:
Blaqstarr was the first US artist I released on Mad Decent. He might have been one of the reasons I started the label. Bmore club was this faceless, crazy, frenetic and scary dance music, not unlike the city itself. I thought Blaqstarr was the real star of this world. Almost a decade ago, many times I traveled down to Baltimore and sat in Blaqstarr and his brother's house, guns peeking out under the mattresses, blunt wrappers everywhere, computer guts laid out on what might have been a shelf turned into a desk, loose weights and blank cds all over the carpet. Blaqstarr would make his music with no chorus or verses, just chants, curses, girls screaming "Blaqstarr" and other random ideas thrown on the track - sounding the same way his brother's house looked. There's no rhyme or reason, it's like the ghetto spontaneously combusted into music. If Bmore was a full fledged music scene, then Blaqstarr was Hunter S Thompson. While most producers were making records for the radio, Blaqstarr was making a soundtrack to murder people with by using a screaming Lil Jon sample played like a piano. Oh and did I mention he could sing and in a crazy falsetto like Al Green. These are some of the records that got lost from that era before Hype Machine. We want to document what the real Bmore sound was about.

Now word comes that Jeffree's and Mad Decent are putting out a collection of remastered tunes from the past. First to drop as a freebie is "Gangsta," which flips the Ini Kamoze classic "Here Comes The Hotstepper" into a straight-up club banger.

Charles Smith (born September 30, 1985), better known as Blaqstarr or DJ Blaqstarr, is a Baltimore, Maryland area rapper, singer, producer and DJ. He is best known for his work with M.I.A..
Biography
Blaqstarr had local success in the early 2000s with the songs "Get My Gun", "Ryda Girl", "Jiggle It", "Hands Up Thumbs Down" and "Feel It In the Air", released via Starr Productions. In 2005, he contributed songs such as "Tote It" to the album Operation Playtime and the songs "Supastarr" and "So Horney" to the album Baltimore Club 9. In December 2005, M.I.A. travelled to America to work with Blaqstarr on her second album, telling The Observer, "I arrived at 9 am and he'd been arrested at seven; he was still up from the night before. That's his studio, and it's got a washer-dryer in the back and a sofa bed, that's his whole set-up; that's why he doesn't make it out of Baltimore." "Shake It to The Ground" featured Rye Rye, an affiliate of Blaqstarr's in Baltimore, became a club hit in 2006. Blaqstarr introduced Rye Rye to M.I.A. after the singer asked for a meeting, leading to both touring with the artist and collaborations on her album Kala which lead to wide recognition. His EP Supastarr was released, its first single being the rereleased "Shake It To the Ground" for which a music video was made, and another EP, titled Shake It To the Ground was also released in 2007.

Blaqstarr was the first US artist I released on Mad Decent. He might have been one of the reasons I started the label. Bmore club was this faceless, crazy, frenetic and scary dance music, not unlike the city itself. I thought Blaqstarr was the real star of this world. Almost a decade ago, many times I traveled down to Baltimore and sat in Blaqstarr and his brother's house, guns peeking out under the mattresses, blunt wrappers everywhere, computer guts laid out on what might have been a shelf turned into a desk, loose weights and blank cds all over the carpet. Blaqstarr would make his music with no chorus or verses, just chants, curses, girls screaming "Blaqstarr" and other random ideas thrown on the track - sounding the same way his brother's house looked. There's no rhyme or reason, it's like the ghetto spontaneously combusted into music. If Bmore was a full fledged music scene, then Blaqstarr was Hunter S Thompson. While most producers were making records for the radio, Blaqstarr was making a soundtrack to murder people with by using a screaming Lil Jon sample played like a piano. Oh and did I mention he could sing and in a crazy falsetto like Al Green. These are some of the records that got lost from that era before Hype Machine. We want to document what the real Bmore sound was about.

AAttempting to show to use a 4 channel mixer to make a cool mash up ,with out using Beat Sync or Auto Beat Matching technology. Just good old fashion turntablism and pitch control. Its hard to film w/ 1 hand and mix on the fly lol. I will upload the final version, w/ out scratching and so much channel messing so it can be used by other djs for club use. Baltimore-based DJ, producer, and artist, Blaqstarr, produced his first "club banger," when he was 16-years old, a local Baltimore Club track that he produced called "Tote It." In fact, before he was even 20 years old, Blaqstarr (real name Charles Smith) had produced over half-a-dozen original tracks that were the biggest tunes in Bmore and whether they were broadcast in his own sets at some eastside house party or spun on the radio at a neighborhood block jam, seemingly every tune Blaqstarr would put out has been a straight "club banger."
It's that Midas touch of Blaqstarr's that thrust him out of the typically provincial, claustrophobic world of B-more clubland and into the world at large. It's why M.I.A. trusted a then relatively unknown Blaqstarr as a key collaborator for her wildly original second album (Kala) and its hit single, "Paper Planes." And it's why Blaqstarr found a home as part of Diplo's Mad Decent family and got to take his musc around the world. In just a short period of time, Blaqstarr's seemingly effortless string of catchy, booming club tracks has made him one of the most anticipated and observed beat-makers in the world.
