Future Systems was a London-based architectural and design practice, formerly headed by Directors Jan Kaplický and Amanda Levete.
Future Systems was founded by Kaplický and David Nixon after working with Denys Lasdun, Norman Foster, Renzo Piano, and Richard Rogers in 1979. The work of Future Systems can be classified within the British high-tech architects as either bionic architecture or amorphous, organic shapes sometimes referred to as "blobitecture". "Compared to his peers, Kaplicky was the avant-garde incarnate, relentlessly pursuing the new new thing, refusing to settle into some predictable, and comfortable, architectural niche."
Future Systems proposals adapted construction methods from other professions, including (most commonly) the curved monocoque shell structures found in aircraft design, car design and boat building.
In the 1990s the company moved from theoretical projects to fee-paying work with projects such as the "spacecraft-like"Media Centre at Lord's Cricket Ground in London (completed 1999), and the Selfridges Building (completed 2003). For Lord's, Kaplicky received the Stirling Prize. The Selfridges department store is a prime example of the early 21st century movement referred to as "blobitecture", and has been compared to Peter Cook's Kunsthaus in Graz, Austria.
Jan Kaplický (/ˈjæn ˈkæplɪtski/; Czech: [ˈjan ˈkaplɪt͡skiː]; 18 April 1937 – 14 January 2009) was a world-renowned NeofuturisticCzech architect who spent a significant part of his life in the United Kingdom. He was the leading architect behind the innovative design office, Future Systems. He was best known for the neofuturistic Selfridges Building in Birmingham, England, and the Media Centre at Lord's Cricket Ground in London.
Jan Kaplický, the only child of a sculptor and a botanical illustrator, was born on 18 April 1937 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and grew up in a suburb of Prague called Ořechovka.
Between 1956 and 1962 he studied at the College of Applied Arts and Architecture and Design (VSUP) in Prague, receiving a Diploma in Architecture. He worked in private practice in Czechoslovakia between 1964 and 1968. In the wake of the Prague Spring, the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, he escaped to London in September 1968 with fellow architect Jaroslav Vokoun carrying only US$100 and a few pairs of socks. In 1969 in London he met again Eva Jiřičná whom he had known in Prague, who then became his girlfriend.
The future is what will happen in the time after the present. Its arrival is considered inevitable due to the existence of time and the laws of physics. Due to the apparent nature of reality and the unavoidability of the future, everything that currently exists and will exist can be categorized as either permanent, meaning that it will exist forever, or temporary, meaning that it will end. The future and the concept of eternity have been major subjects of philosophy, religion, and science, and defining them non-controversially has consistently eluded the greatest of minds. In the Occidental view, which uses a linear conception of time, the future is the portion of the projected time line that is anticipated to occur. In special relativity, the future is considered absolute future, or the future light cone.
In the philosophy of time, presentism is the belief that only the present exists and the future and the past are unreal. Religions consider the future when they address issues such as karma, life after death, and eschatologies that study what the end of time and the end of the world will be. Religious figures such as prophets and diviners have claimed to see into the future. Organized efforts to predict or forecast the future may have derived from observations by early man of heavenly objects.
A system is a set of interacting or interdependent component parts forming a complex/intricate whole. Every system is delineated by its spatial and temporal boundaries, surrounded and influenced by its environment, described by its structure and purpose and expressed in its functioning.
The term system may also refer to a set of rules that governs structure and/or behavior. Alternatively, and usually in the context of complex social systems, the term is used to describe the set of rules that govern structure and/or behavior.
The term "system" comes from the Latin word systēma, in turn from Greek σύστημα systēma: "whole compounded of several parts or members, system", literary "composition".
According to Marshall McLuhan,
"System" means "something to look at". You must have a very high visual gradient to have systematization. In philosophy, before Descartes, there was no "system". Plato had no "system". Aristotle had no "system".
In the 19th century the French physicist Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot, who studied thermodynamics, pioneered the development of the concept of a "system" in the natural sciences. In 1824 he studied the system which he called the working substance (typically a body of water vapor) in steam engines, in regards to the system's ability to do work when heat is applied to it. The working substance could be put in contact with either a boiler, a cold reservoir (a stream of cold water), or a piston (to which the working body could do work by pushing on it). In 1850, the German physicist Rudolf Clausius generalized this picture to include the concept of the surroundings and began to use the term "working body" when referring to the system.

Lecture date: 1998-03-03 Future Systems is an architectural and design practice headed by Jan Kaplicky and Amanda Levete. In this slide show retrospective of the practice's projects, Kaplicky illustrates how they aim to deliver innovative and provocative design while challenging traditional preconceptions of space. Future Systems seeks inspiration from the context and the site as well as from nature and technology, drawing on organic formations and the human form as much as from the materials and technologies of industry. After an international career in practice and teaching, Kaplicky founded Future Systems in 1979. He was an AA Unit master between 1982 and 1988.

Scientists and engineers at BAE Systems have lifted the lid on some futuristic technologies that could be incorporated in military and civil aircraft of 2040 or even earlier. The Survivor - This technology allows jets to quickly heal themselves from damage sustained in flight. The Transformer - The Transformer is a flexible aircraft system that combines smaller jets for more efficient travel, before having them split apart to quickly adapt to any scenario. On-board 3D Printing - Smaller unmanned aircraft -- or UAVs -- are created by super high-tech on-board 3D printers, via Additive Layer Manufacturing and robotic assembly techniques. The 3D printers respond to data fed to them by a remote control room where a human commander decides what should be produced. Directed Energy Systems - A...
We must entirely rethink the way we provide energy, and change our mindset from energy as a commodity to energy as a service. And we can do this in one generation, both lowering emissions and elevating quantity and quality of service if we think innovatively. This is even more critical as we address challenges implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris agreement on Climate Change. Rethinking Energy is a talk for everyone who cares about climate change, and the ways to balance the needs of the developing and developed world regarding energy. Scott Foster, an engineer and innovative thinker on energy is Director of the Sustainable Energy Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). He has led numerous strategy engagements on the question of clim...

Lecture date: 1996-10-14 Jan Kaplicky and Angus Pond of Future Systems and Cynthia Grant of the London Docklands Corporation deliver a lecture to mark the opening of the AA exhibition Floating Bridge: West India Quay which examines the bridge constructed by Future Systems that links the strongly contrasting scales of Canary Wharf and West India Quay. The objective for the design of the bridge was a span between two points with as elegant and minimal structure as possible, giving pedestrians a sense of freedom and space as they cross the dock. By creating a floating structure, emphasis is placed on the stretch of water. The design reinterprets the ancient tradition of the pontoon bridge, creating a gently arched structure floating on four pairs of pontoons. Future Systems is an architectu...
Twenty-thirteen is off to a roaring start with the announcement of Futures newest team rider, Merewether, Australia’s Craig Anderson. After years of riding the Futures system, thanks to the guidance of his longtime shaper Hayden Cox, Ando has officially joined the squad. “I’ve been riding Hayden Shapes surfboards for quite a while, and he’s always put Futures in my boards,” Craig said in a recent video interview. “To be honest though, I don’t really know too much about surfboards and fins, but I know what feels good under my feet… they feel good” Craig has begun a crash course in knowing more, with early signature fin proto-types already in his board, in pursuit of a new feeling that is also good. After nearly 10 years of riding the Futures system, Rob Machado has signed off on his first ever signature fin. The collaboration between Rob and Futures is the perfect blend of cutting edge hydrodynamics and environmental sustainability. Rob’s fin features a torsional flex pattern, thanks to Futures’ V2 foil and a layer of strategically placed carbon fiber. Combined with renewable, fast growing bamboo, the fin is both light and lively. Designed for Rob’s explosive style, the bamboo carbon matrix stores potential energy and releases it as a burst of kinetic speed.
