On Wednesday, Aug. 28, The Old Globe presented Artistic Director and noted Shakespearean Barry Edelstein In Conversation with James Shapiro, the internationally renowned Shakespeare scholar. This special discussion between the two Shakespeare experts explored themes in the Bard's canon, current trends in American Shakespeare and the controversies surrounding the play The Merchant of Venice, which ran as part of the Globe's 2013 Shakespeare Festival.
"Professor James Shapiro is one of the world's most important Shakespeareans, and it is a high honor to welcome him to The Old Globe and San Diego," said Edelstein prior to the event. "The excellence of his scholarly work speaks for itself, but there are two things that I think make Prof. Shapiro unique: he is a deep lover and meaningful supporter of the theater, and he has a rare ability to make complex ideas in Shakespeare accessible and immediate. I cannot wait for the real privilege of being in conversation with him."
James Shapiro is the Larry Miller Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, where he has taught since 1985. His books include Rival Playwrights (1991), Shakespeare and the Jews (1996), Oberammergau (2000), 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare (2005) and Contested Will: Who Wrote Shakespeare? (2010). In 2012 he coauthored and presented a three-part BBC documentary, Shakespeare: The King's Man. He is currently at work on a Library of America collection, Shakespeare in America, and a book, Shakespeare in 1606: The Year of Lear. He has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the New York Public Library Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. He serves on the Board of Governors of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Folger Shakespeare Library, as well as serving as Shakespeare Scholar in Residence at The Public Theater and Vice President of The Authors Guild. He was recently inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein is a stage director, producer, author and educator. Widely recognized as one of the leading authorities on the works of Shakespeare in the United States, he has directed nearly half of the Bard's works. As Director of the Shakespeare Initiative at The Public Theater (2008-2012), he oversaw all of the company's Shakespearean productions, as well as its extensive educational, community outreach and artist-training programs. At The Public, Edelstein staged Julius Caesar starring Jeffrey Wright for Shakespeare in the Park and The Merchant of Venice featuring Ron Leibman's Obie Award-winning portrayal of Shylock. He was also Associate Producer of The Public's Broadway production of The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino. From 1998-2003 he was Artistic Director of Classic Stage Company, where he produced and directed some of New York's most memorable classical productions. Edelstein's Shakespearean directorial credits include The Winter's Tale with David Strathairn, Timon of Athens with Richard Thomas, As You Like It with Gwyneth Paltrow and Richard III with John Turturro. His additional credits include the Lucille Lortel Award-winning revival of Arthur Miller's All My Sons; the world premiere of Steve Martin's The Underpants, which he commissioned; Molière's The Misanthrope starring Uma Thurman in her stage debut; and the world premiere of novelist Nathan Englander's play The Twenty-Seventh Man. Edelstein has taught Shakespearean acting at The Juilliard School, NYU's Graduate Acting Program and the University of Southern California. His book Thinking Shakespeare (called by New York magazine "a must-read for actors") was published in 2007 and is now the standard text on American Shakespearean acting. He is also the author of Bardisms: Shakespeare for All Occasions.

Greg Doran, the new artistic director of the RSC, was crowned with laurels at the Shakespeare Institute on January 24th to mark his installation as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow. Conferring the honour, the Director of the Institute, Professor Michael Dobson, spoke warmly of Mr Doran's career-long commitment to rediscovering neglected plays by Shakespeare's contemporaries, a project in which the Institute will be assisting the RSC from this spring onwards through a workshopping process involving academics, actors and directors known as 'Scholars' Pitch.'
During a candid hour-long interview, Mr Doran discussed this project, together with his wider plans for the RSC in Stratford and London, his preliminary thoughts towards his production of Richard II later this year (in which David Tennant, who played Hamlet for Mr Doran in 2008, will play the king), and his memories of playing Lady Macbeth at a Catholic boys' school in Lancashire.

An artistic director is the executive of an arts organization, particularly in a theatre company, that handles the organization's artistic direction.[citation needed] He or she is generally a producer and director, but not in the sense of a mogul, since the organization is generally a non-profit organization. The artistic director of a theatre company is the individual with the over-arching artistic control of the theatre's production choices, directorial choices, and overall artistic vision. In smaller theatres, the artistic director may be the founder of the theatre and the primary director of its plays. In larger non-profit theatres (often known in Canada and the United States as regional theatres) the artistic director may be appointed by the board of directors.
The artistic director of a theatre is similar to the music director of a symphony, the primary person responsible for planning a theatre's season. The artistic director's responsibilities can include but are not limited to choosing the material staged in a season, the hiring of creative/production personnel (such as directors), and other theatre management tasks. He or she may also direct productions for the company. Artistic directors work closely with the general manager of the theatre, and contribute the artistic evaluation of projects and productions to be included in promotional, funding, and press materials. An artistic director also functions as a resource for the directors who are working to mount productions at the theatre and can provide support, counsel, and/or artistic input where requested. The artistic director may be called to assume the production should the director become unable to complete his/her duties. Artistic directors are frequently regarded as the artistic representatives of theatre companies and are often required to speak about their theatre to the press. In the United States, artistic directors often have fundraising responsibilities as well.

Kevin Spacey, CBE (born Kevin Spacey Fowler; July 26, 1959) is an American actor, director, screenwriter, producer, and crooner. He grew up in California, and began his career as a stage actor during the 1980s, before being cast in supporting roles in film and television. He gained critical acclaim in the early 1990s, culminating in his first Academy Award for The Usual Suspects (Best Supporting Actor), followed by a Best Actor Academy Award win for American Beauty (1999). His other starring roles in Hollywood include Seven, L.A. Confidential, Pay It Forward, K-PAX, and Superman Returns in a career which has earned him several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Since 2003, he has been artistic director of the Old Vic theatre in London.
Spacey was born in South Orange, New Jersey, the son of Kathleen Ann (née Knutson; December 5, 1931 – March 19, 2003), a secretary, and Thomas Geoffrey Fowler (June 4, 1924 – December 24, 1992), a technical writer and data consultant. He has two older siblings: a sister, Julie, and a brother, Randy. He attended Northridge Military Academy, Canoga Park High School (in tenth and eleventh grades), and then Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, where he graduated valedictorian of his class. At Chatsworth High, he starred in the school's senior production of The Sound of Music, playing the part of Captain Georg von Trapp, opposite Mare Winningham's character, Maria.

On Wednesday, Aug. 28, The Old Globe presented Artistic Director and noted Shakespearean Barry Edelstein In Conversation with James Shapiro, the internationally renowned Shakespeare scholar. This special discussion between the two Shakespeare experts explored themes in the Bard's canon, current trends in American Shakespeare and the controversies surrounding the play The Merchant of Venice, which ran as part of the Globe's 2013 Shakespeare Festival.
"Professor James Shapiro is one of the world's most important Shakespeareans, and it is a high honor to welcome him to The Old Globe and San Diego," said Edelstein prior to the event. "The excellence of his scholarly work speaks for itself, but there are two things that I think make Prof. Shapiro unique: he is a deep lover and meaningful supporter of the theater, and he has a rare ability to make complex ideas in Shakespeare accessible and immediate. I cannot wait for the real privilege of being in conversation with him."
James Shapiro is the Larry Miller Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, where he has taught since 1985. His books include Rival Playwrights (1991), Shakespeare and the Jews (1996), Oberammergau (2000), 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare (2005) and Contested Will: Who Wrote Shakespeare? (2010). In 2012 he coauthored and presented a three-part BBC documentary, Shakespeare: The King's Man. He is currently at work on a Library of America collection, Shakespeare in America, and a book, Shakespeare in 1606: The Year of Lear. He has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the New York Public Library Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. He serves on the Board of Governors of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Folger Shakespeare Library, as well as serving as Shakespeare Scholar in Residence at The Public Theater and Vice President of The Authors Guild. He was recently inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Conferring the honour, the Director of the Institute, Professor Michael Dobson, spoke warmly of Mr Doran's career-long commitment to rediscovering neglected plays by Shakespeare's contemporaries, a project in which the Institute will be assisting the RSC from this spring onwards through a workshopping process involving academics, actors and directors known as 'Scholars' Pitch.'
During a candid hour-long interview, Mr Doran discussed this project, together with his wider plans for the RSC in Stratford and London, his preliminary thoughts towards his production of Richard II later this year (in which David Tennant, who played Hamlet for Mr Doran in 2008, will play the king), and his memories of playing Lady Macbeth at a Catholic boys' school in Lancashire.
