Martin Jay

Martin Jay (born 1944) is the Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. He is an intellectual historian whose research interests have connected history with other academic and intellectual activities, such as the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, social theory, cultural criticism, and historiography.

Career

Jay received his B.A. from Union College in 1965. In 1971, he completed his Ph.D. in History at Harvard under the tutelage of H. Stuart Hughes. His dissertation was later revised into the book The Dialectical Imagination, which covers the history of the Frankfurt School from 1923-1950. While he was conducting research for his dissertation, he established a correspondence and friendship with many of the members of the Frankfurt School. He was closest to Leo Löwenthal, who had provided him access to personal letters and documents for his research. Jay's work since then has explored Marxism, socialism, historiography, cultural criticism, visual culture, and the place of post-structuralism and post-modernism in European intellectual history. His current research is nominalism and photography. He is a recipient of the 2010/2011 Berlin Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Berlin.

Jay Hardway

Jobke Heiblom (born April 27, 1991), better known as Jay Hardway, is a Dutch DJ, record producer and drummer. He is signed to Universal Music Publishing. He is best known for co-writing "Wizard" with Martin Garrix. The 2013 single became an international hit charting in Belgium, France and the Netherlands. The two had already collaborated in "Registration Code" in late-2012, and later again in early-2013 with "Error 404".

Career

2012–present: Breakthrough

Hardway's first collaboration with Martin Garrix "Registration Code" was released in 2012 as a free download through SoundCloud. In March 2013 the two had released the single "Error 404" through Doorn Records. In December 2013 Jay and Martin released the single "Wizard" through Spinnin' Records, which became one of their most successful collaborations to date. The song has peaked at number 16 on the Dutch Singles Chart and number 7 on the UK Singles Chart. Hardway released his first solo single "Bootcamp" in May 2014. The music video for "Bootcamp" had obtained over 6.8 million views on YouTube (sep 2015). His song "Freedom" with Mike Hawkins was later released on the August of the same year.Later in 2015, He collaborated with Naut Blonden. Pulse was released on Spinnin Records

Martijn Garritsen (born 14 May 1996), commonly known by his stage name Martin Garrix (by his logo Mar+in Garri×), is a Dutch DJ, composer, musician and record producer. He is best known for the track "Animals", which was a top 10 hit in more than 10 countries; the song has peaked at number 1 in Belgium and the United Kingdom, and number 3 in Ireland. His single "Wizard", produced with Jay Hardway, was successful in numerous countries in 2014. Debuting at number 40 of DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJs, he is currently ranked number 3, behind Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Hardwell.

Career

Martin Garrix learned to play guitar at age 8. In 2004, Martin Garrix expressed interest in becoming a DJ after seeing Tiësto perform at the Olympic games in Athens. Garritsen took particular inspiration from the track "Traffic", prompting him to download specialist software and enabling him to start composing. In 2013, Garritsen graduated from the Herman Brood Academy, a production school in Utrecht. Martin Garrix used multiple aliases, among them GRX. He ghost writes tracks for other artists, and despite this, only one in fifty of his tracks have made it out to the public.

Frankfurt School

The Frankfurt School (German: Frankfurter Schule) is a school of social theory and philosophy associated in part with the Institute for Social Research at the Goethe University Frankfurt. Founded during the interwar period, the School consisted of dissidents who were at home neither in the existent capitalist, fascist, nor communist systems that had formed at the time. Many of these theorists believed that traditional theory could not adequately explain the turbulent and unexpected development of capitalist societies in the twentieth century. Critical of both capitalism and Soviet socialism, their writings pointed to the possibility of an alternative path to social development.

Although sometimes only loosely affiliated, Frankfurt School theorists spoke with a common paradigm in mind; they shared the same assumptions and were preoccupied with similar questions. To fill in the perceived omissions of classical Marxism, they sought to draw answers from other schools of thought, hence using the insights of antipositivist sociology, psychoanalysis, existential philosophy, and other disciplines. The school's main figures sought to learn from and synthesize the works of such varied thinkers as Kant, Hegel, Marx, Freud, Weber, and Lukács.
