Jane Austen created the definitive picture of Georgian England -- a landscape of Palladian mansions and handsome parsonages, peopled by rigidly-divided classes. No writer matches Austen's sensitive ear for the hypocrisy and irony lurking beneath the genteel conversation. Never has a novelist written comic prose with such subtlety and restraint. Her backdrop is the savage Yorkshire moors, her subject the all-consuming passions of the heart. The story of Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw is a full-blooded tale of violent attraction, thwarted love, death and the supernatural that makes Jane Austen look mundane -- and clutches at the reader's heart with a vigour and directness unmatched in English literature.

The Brontës (
/ˈbrɒntiz/) were a nineteenth-century literary family associated with the village of Haworth in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The sisters, Charlotte (born 21 April 1816), Emily (born 30 July 1818), and Anne (born 17 January 1820), are well known as poets and novelists. They originally published their poems and novels under masculine pseudonyms, following the custom of the times practised by female writers. Their stories immediately attracted attention, although not always the best, for their passion and originality. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were later to be accepted as masterpieces of literature.
The three sisters and their brother, Branwell, were very close and they developed their childhood imaginations through the collaborative writing of increasingly complex stories. The confrontation with the deaths first of their mother then of their two older sisters marked them profoundly and influenced their writing.

Our video is a guided walk in Bronte Country in West Yorkshire. We start our in Haworth and walk past the Bronte Parsonage Museum to Lower Laithe Reservoir, through the village of Stanbury then along the Pennine Way to Top Withens which is known as Wuthering Heights in Emily Bronte's book. We then make our way down to Bronte Waterfalls then follow the Bronte Way back to Haworth. We start our in Haworth and walk past the Bronte Parsonage Museum to Lower Laithe Reservoir, through the village of Stanbury then along the Pennine Way to Top Withens which is known as Wuthering Heights in Emily Bronte's book. We then make our way down to Bronte Waterfalls then follow the Bronte Way back to Haworth. We finish our walk by visiting the Worth Valley Railway to watch the steam train come into the station.This is an easy walk on good tracks and paths over open land and fields. There are some inclines and declines and a two stretches of road. Elevation: Approx lowest point 228m (748 ft) Approx highest point 421m (1381ft). Approx 7.5 miles allow 3 hours using OS Explorer map OL21, South Pennines. Start point: The Village car park off Weavers Hill in Haworth. Pay and Display £4 for all day.
