Belgium vs Australia Men's Hockey World League Rotterdam Final [23/6/13]
Belgium defeated
Australia 7-6 in a dramatic shootout to win the
Men's
Rabobank Hockey World League Semi-Final in
Rotterdam.
After a tense start
Chris Ciriello opened the scoring with a low drag flick from a penalty corner.
Ciriello nearly made it two from another short corner but was denied by a terrific stop from
Vincent Vanash.
Vanash kept the Red
Lions in touch early in the second half; another wonderful save to deny
Matthew Swann after good work from
Matt Gohdes.
Belgium levelled the match with twenty four minutes left to play. Tom Boons' powerful shot deflected off an
Australian defender on the way in.
Despite being dominated for most of the match
Sebastien Dockier put the
Red Panthers into the lead.
Left unchecked at
point blank range Dockier turned the ball in.
With one minute left
Russell Ford deflected the ball up and over the
Belgian goalie to make it 2-2. Like the women's final the day before, this would be settled with a shootout.
With both sides tied after five shots it went to sudden death.
Simon Gougnard in for the injured
Loick Luypaert kept his nerve to slot past
Andrew Charter on the ninth penalty.
Chris Ciriello shot wide on his attempt to give Belgium the victory.
