HMT Rohna
HMT Rohna was a British India Steam Navigation Company passenger and cargo liner that was built on Tyneside in 1926 as SS Rhona and requisitioned as a troop ship in 1940. ("HMT" stands for His Majesty's Transport.) Rohna was sunk in the Mediterranean in November 1943 by a Henschel Hs 293 guided glide bomb launched by a Luftwaffe aircraft. More than 1,100 people were killed, most of whom were US troops.
Building
In 1925 British India Line ordered two new ships for its Madras – Nagapatam – Singapore service. They were sister ships but were built by different shipyards and had different engines. Hawthorn Leslie and Company built Rohna at its shipyard at Hebburn on Tyneside. Barclay, Curle and Company built Rajula in Glasgow on Clydeside. Both ships were launched and completed in 1926.
Rohna was launched on 24 August 1926 and completed on 5 November. She was named after a village in Sonipat, Punjab, India. She had 15 corrugated furnaces that heated five single-ended boilers with a combined heating surface of 14,080 square feet (1,308 m2). These fed steam at 215 lbf/in2 to two four-cylinder quadruple expansion steam engines, developing a total of 984 NHP. Each engine drove one of the ship's twin screws, giving Rohna 984 NHP or 5,000 ihp. She achieved 14.3 knots (26.5 km/h) on her sea trials and had a cruising speed of 12.5 knots (23.2 km/h).

LIVING HISTORY - WWII. My grandfather, Sgt Louis R. Markiewitz, served during World War II in the 853rd Engineer Aviation Battalion. His unit was the largest aboard the HMT Rohna, a British troopship, when it was sunk by enemy action on the day after Thanksgiving in 1943. In this attack, the Nazi He-217 bomber released an HS-293 radio-guided bomb that was guided toward the convoy in which the Rohna was in the dubious "coffin corner." As the bomb struck the ship, over 400 died instantly. Another 600 died in the water that night and in the end, 1,015 US Servicemen perished in the Mediterranean Sea that night. On Nov 26, 1943, the HMT Rohna was attacked and sunk while transporting troops in the Mediterranean. 1,138 men were killed of which 1,015 were U.S. personnel. The attack was the largest loss of U.S. troops at sea due to enemy action in a single incident. However, the War Department was slow to release the true cause of the sinking. Not until 1967 was a more complete history of the event revealed. Jason Markiewitz and Michael Walsh present the events surrounding the attack and the sinking and their organization's continuing effort to bring this story to the public. Jason Markiewitz is President, The Rohna Survivors Memorial Association & Descendant of a Survivor and Michael Walsh is a Past President, The Rohna Survivors Memorial Association and Next-of-Kin of a Rescuer.

The attack was the largest loss of U.S. troops at sea due to enemy action in a single incident. However, the War Department was slow to release the true cause of the sinking. Not until 1967 was a more complete history of the event revealed.

In 1943, PFC Manny Carvalho was part of the U.S. Army's Armor Corps under command of General George Patton in World War II's North African Theatre. In November of that year Manny found himself aboard the HMT Rohna sailing off the coast of Algeria.
The Rohna was part of convoy of ships that came under the attack of the Luftwaffe. Shortly into the attack the Rohna was hit by a first of it's kind radio-guided glide bomb known as the Henschel Hs 293. The bomb fatally impacted the port side of the ship near the engine room and troop deck, killing and wounded many on board.
Of the 1,138 men who were killed, 1,015 were US personnel. The attack is the largest loss of US troops at sea due to enemy action in a single incident. Full details of the sinking were not released until 1967 after the passing of the Freedom of Information Act.

HMT Rohna
HMT Rohna was a British India Steam Navigation Company passenger and cargo liner that was built on Tyneside in 1926 as SS Rhona and requisitioned as a troop ship in 1940. ("HMT" stands for His Majesty's Transport.) Rohna was sunk in the Mediterranean in November 1943 by a Henschel Hs 293 guided glide bomb launched by a Luftwaffe aircraft. More than 1,100 people were killed, most of whom were US troops.
Building
In 1925 British India Line ordered two new ships for its Madras – Nagapatam – Singapore service. They were sister ships but were built by different shipyards and had different engines. Hawthorn Leslie and Company built Rohna at its shipyard at Hebburn on Tyneside. Barclay, Curle and Company built Rajula in Glasgow on Clydeside. Both ships were launched and completed in 1926.
Rohna was launched on 24 August 1926 and completed on 5 November. She was named after a village in Sonipat, Punjab, India. She had 15 corrugated furnaces that heated five single-ended boilers with a combined heating surface of 14,080 square feet (1,308 m2). These fed steam at 215 lbf/in2 to two four-cylinder quadruple expansion steam engines, developing a total of 984 NHP. Each engine drove one of the ship's twin screws, giving Rohna 984 NHP or 5,000 ihp. She achieved 14.3 knots (26.5 km/h) on her sea trials and had a cruising speed of 12.5 knots (23.2 km/h).
