A 31-year-old woman will spend the rest of her life in prison without the possibility of parole in the murder of her boyfriend in their Jackson apartment. MyFoxDetroit.com reports that Jackson County Circuit Judge John McBain told Camia Gamet at Wednesday's sentencing that the slaying was among the worst "cold-blooded murders" he has seen. Marcel Hill was beaten and stabbed to death May 18 with a filet knife. When one of Hill's aunts spoke to the court, Gamet was seen by the judge rolling her eyes and snickering. "You gutted him like a fish in that apartment," McBain said at Gamet's sentencing. "You were relentless. You stabbed, you stabbed, you stabbed, you stabbed, you stabbed until he was dead. I agree with the family, I hope you die in prison as well. You know, if this was a death penalty state, you'd be getting the chair." A jury convicted Gamet last month of first-degree murder. Gamet has said she believed she was fighting an intruder in a darkened room and that the slaying was in self-defense. The 38-year-old Hill was stabbed 11 times. Hill told police in March 2013 that Gamet had struck him in the head with a hammer.

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Channel 9 has obtained video of Judge Frederic Schott becoming angry with a prosecutor during a hearing in Seminole County. The exchange between Schott and Assistant State Attorney Diana Miers happened on March 11 and was captured on courtroom video. A jury had just found a woman guilty of driving under the influence when the attorneys and judge started discussing the woman's license suspension. The Sanford police officer who made the arrest caused the defendant to lose her driver's license for a few months because of a mistake on the arrest paperwork. "Are you going to nolle pros that case? Or am I going to get mad at you today?" Schott asked. The judge and Miers got into a heated argument because he wanted the police officer to be charged with lying. "I want you taking him up on perjury," Schott said. "He admitted it was a mistake, your honor," Miers said. After the exchange, Schott decided to reverse the jury's verdict to not guilty. "This whole case was fishy," Schott said. Miers tried to argue against Schott's dismissal of the case but he didn't agree. "This is again evidence, direct evidence, and not circumstantial evidence," Miers said. WFTV legal analyst Belvin Perry, former chief judge for Orange and Osceola counties, was surprised to see Schott's behavior in court. "That is a very poor example of judicial temperament that judges are supposed to display," Perry said. "He should've counted to 10 and kept quiet." Officials told Eyewitness News that as a result of the incident, Schott will soon only be presiding over civil cases.

What do you call it when a judge warns a kid about prison rape? Tough love. Judge Verda Colvin pretty much shredded a courtroom full of children with her warnings about what happens to the incarcerated. For example: “Somebody raping you in the middle of the night, and there’s nothing you can do but just lay there because guess what, everybody got to get their turn,” she said in a Thursday report from Fox 5 Atlanta. It’s part of “Consider the Consequences,” a scared straight program at Bibb County, Georgia. As part of this, boys and girls age 9 to 17 were shown what it’s like to be in jail. They were made to wear jump suits, and were put in cells. But it was their meeting with Judge Colvin that left some in tears. You can see the talk here. Forgive the grainy video quality because it’s worth a watch: “Stop acting like you’re trash, and putting pictures of yourself on the Internet,” she said in a comment aimed at the girls. Early on, she whipped out a body bag to show them the worst possible consequence to a life of crime and violence. “I am sick and tired of seeing people who look like you and I [black] come in my courtroom, and I have to sentence them to prison,” Colvin later said. “And then you hear them fussing on TV about African Americans being in the prison system. Well, guess what, if you don’t do what it takes to there, you won’t be a part of it. You already know the game. If you know they [the police] come into your community more than they do in other communities, then guess what, you’ve got a heads up. So that means you’ve got to do what’s right, right?” But Colvin’s tough lecture was tempered by an undercurrent of compassion. She voiced a hope—a demand, really—that she never see those kids in her courtroom ever again, and pushed them to be the best adults they could be. “You are special, and you are uniquely made, and nobody else can do what you’re supposed to do in this world. Nobody else. And if you don’t do it, we won’t have it.”
