On July 29th, British actress Jean Kent celebrated her 90th birthday. This is the local ITV News item from ITN Anglia. Jean lived in the quiet Suffolk village of Westhorpe, and I think you'll agree this is a charming film for a great lady. She is probably best remembered as the star of 1940s Gainsborough melodramas such as Caravan and Fanny By Gaslight. Other films include Trottie True and The Browning Version.

A wonderful melodrama in the good old British 1940s tradition (though why it's called "Carnival" is beyond me!)... The gorgeous Sally Gray, sounding very modern, leads a great supporting cast - Michael Wilding, Stanley Holloway Jean Kent, Catherine Lacey, Hazel Court, Nancy Price, Brenda Bruce, and a sinister performance by Bernard Miles - also a small, surprisingly, uncredited role as a midwife by Kathleen Harrison who made her film debut in 1915 and lived till the ripe old age of 103. Watch out for a nice turn as the bitchy 'Madge Wilson' by an unknown actress called Pamela Foster. Sally Gray, Jean Kent and Brenda Bruce all had dancing experience in West End musicals so were able to perform in the dance sequences which were choreographed by Freddie Carpenter. Carpenter was a choreographe...

A superb British movie from 1951 for which Michael Redgrave won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival - Terence Rattigan also won the writing prize for his adaption of his own original stage play. The synopsis takes place at a minor English public school (actually filmed at Sherbourne) and revolves around the last day of the Classics master, Crocker-Harris, who, due to ill-health, is taking early retirement, thereby losing his pension which adds to the fury of his bitter and frustrated wife, who herself was having an affair with the science master - and not being too secretive about it! Michael Redgrave gives a superb delicately nuanced performance as the humourless, unpopular master, disliked and ridiculed by his pupils. As the film progresses there comes an extraordinarily touching s...

You think you're hot stuff
But in my book, you're not hot enough)
I know you think you're out of sight
'Cause all of the girls really like you
And just because of that build you got,
You think no girl can refuse you
I'll bet you do, oh yes you do,
But I've got some news for you now
You need somebody to tell you (yes you do now)
You need somebody to tell you (yes you do now)
You need somebody to tell you (yes you do now)
You think you're hot stuff
But in my book, you're not hot enough now
You think you're hot stuff
But I'm the one who's gonna cool you off
When the other girls looked at you,
I know how they got fooled
Their mistake was they got carried away
And they didn't know what to do now
Baby, baby, I know what you're after
But I know what you're not gonna get
You just need somebody to tell you (yes you do now)
You need somebody to tell you (yes you do now)
You need somebody to tell you (yes you do now)
You think you're hot stuff
But in my book, you're not hot enough now
You think you're hot stuff
But I'm the one who's gonna cool you off
Yes I am now
(You think you're hot stuff)
Many girls have been fooled
By too many men like you
And it's about time you got put in your place
And it's just what I'm gonna do now
I know I've got to give my love to some man
But you can bet it won't be you
'Cause you need somebody to tell you (yes you do now)
You just need somebody to tell you (yes you do now)
You need somebody to tell you (yes you do now)
You think you're hot stuff
But in my book, you're not hot enough now
You think you're hot stuff
But I'm the one who's gonna cool you off
