Since Russia’s seizure of the Crimean peninsula and the start of conflict in eastern Ukraine in spring 2014, the small Baltic state of Lithuania has been anxiously eyeing Moscow. Some in the capital of Vilnius believe that the country might fall prey to a Ukraine-style military incursion, orchestrated by Russia. Lithuania, a former Soviet satellite, shares a border with the heavily militarized Russian exclave of Kaliningrad — which houses Russia’s Baltic fleet and has been flooded with arms and personnel in the last year. From Kaliningrad, Russia has staged military drills that reportedly involve thousands of soldiers, hundreds of military vehicles, and dozens of warships. In response, Lithuanian forces are also mobilizing. In May, VICE News followed the Lithuanian army during Operation Lightning Strike — a four-day wargames exercise. The drill marked the first nation-wide test of Lithuania’s new 2,500-strong “Rapid Reaction Force,” set up in the wake of the Ukraine crisis to deal with hybrid warfare threats, such as armed protests, airfield and weapons stockpile seizures, and the sudden appearance of “little green men” who seem to take orders from far away. The first lesson of the Lithuanian Video Course. The lesson covers the very basics of the Lithuanian language and is organised into three parts. The first part presents the new vocabulary, the second asks you to repeat after the audio and the third part gives you an English phrase and asks you to recall its Lithuanian equivalent. Don't worry if you can't do it the first time. Just keep playing the video over and over until you can easily remember the words. Then say them out loud before the audio does so! -

Since Russia’s seizure of the Crimean peninsula and the start of conflict in eastern Ukraine in spring 2014, the small Baltic state of Lithuania has been anxiously eyeing Moscow. Some in the capital of Vilnius believe that the country might fall prey to a Ukraine-style military incursion, orchestrated by Russia.
Lithuania, a former Soviet satellite, shares a border with the heavily militarized Russian exclave of Kaliningrad — which houses Russia’s Baltic fleet and has been flooded with arms and personnel in the last year. From Kaliningrad, Russia has staged military drills that reportedly involve thousands of soldiers, hundreds of military vehicles, and dozens of warships. In response, Lithuanian forces are also mobilizing.
In May, VICE News followed the Lithuanian army during Operation Lightning Strike — a four-day wargames exercise. The drill marked the first nation-wide test of Lithuania’s new 2,500-strong “Rapid Reaction Force,” set up in the wake of the Ukraine crisis to deal with hybrid warfare threats, such as armed protests, airfield and weapons stockpile seizures, and the sudden appearance of “little green men” who seem to take orders from far away.

The first part presents the new vocabulary, the second asks you to repeat after the audio and the third part gives you an English phrase and asks you to recall its Lithuanian equivalent. Don't worry if you can't do it the first time. Just keep playing the video over and over until you can easily remember the words. Then say them out loud before the audio does so!

Soviet Lithuanian Psychological Drama: Summer Ends In Fall/ Vasara baigiasi rudenį ENGLISH SUBTITLES
The film's script was written by Romualdas Granauskas who passed away today (28.10.2014) and it is a really fine example of Soviet-Lithuanian cinema: there are two layers in the film - one that is understandable to everybody: a story about a middle-aged man who has just come back from jail where he got into due to drunk driving and has difficult time adjusting & reuniting with his grown up son when they fall in love with the same woman, but through the small clues that were only understandable to Lithuanians it is clear that what the film's creators were really trying to portray the return home of people deported to the gulags due to political reasons by Soviets. This movie about the roots of Lithuanian folk customs was filmed in Lithuanian Film Studio in 1982 but it was banned from cinemas until 1984 because people in charge of Central USSR television regarded it as "too ethnic". The director of this film Gytis Lukšas recounts: "At the time when Lithuania's national broadcaster was not allowed to show even distaffs with traditional ornaments (because the Central Committee of the Communist Party regarded all ethnic items as idolization of the feudal-bourgeois past) a feature-length movie about the 9th century roots of our culture suddenly comes out! The film's script was written by Romualdas Granauskas who passed away today (28.10.2014) and it is a really fine example of Soviet-Lithuanian cinema: there are two layers in the film - one that is understandable to everybody: a story about a middle-aged man who has just come back from jail where he got into due to drunk driving and has difficult time adjusting & reuniting with his grown up son when they fall in love with the same woman, but through the small clues that were only understandable to Lithuanians it is clear that what the film's creators were really trying to portray the return home of people deported to the gulags due to political reasons by Soviets. The theme song for the film track is a well known folk song of Forest Brothers (guerrilla fighters against Soviets) & deportees to Siberia - nobody in Moscow's film studio where this film was brought for the audition knew it, otherwise it would have never passed the censorship of Soviet propaganda machine. The film's director also meant to cinematographically show how the forced Soviet farm collectivization was closing in on the last Lithuanian farmstead.
Filmo režisierius G. Lukšas turėjo net 8 metus laukti, kol tarybinė valdžia leis statyti šį filmą. Nomenklatūrininkai vis įžvelgdavo, kad scenarijus, kurį parašė Romualdas Granauskas, atspindi iškreiptą tarybinio gyvenimo vaizdą. Filmas atstovavo Lietuvą sąjunginiame kino festivalyje Leningrade. Filmas apdovanotas prizu už geriausią aktorių ansamblį (Vaiva Mainelytė, Valentinas Masalskis, Algimantas Masiulis). Pasak Gyčio Lukšo, sklandė gandai, kad šiai juostai buvo numatytas ir dar didesnis apdovanojimas, tačiau visgi nuspręsta jo neteikti. Tuo metu festivalio komisijos nariu buvęs garsus rusų aktorius Viačeslavas Tichonovas lietuvių režisieriui papasakojo apie jiems daromą spaudimą neduoti filmui „Vasara baigiasi rudenį“ daugiau prizų. „Deja, tas spaudimas buvo daromas ne iš Maskvos, o iš Lietuvos“, - apgailestaudamas prisimena G.Lukšas.

The film's script was written by Romualdas Granauskas who passed away today (28.10.2014) and it is a really fine example of Soviet-Lithuanian cinema: there are two layers in the film - one that is understandable to everybody: a story about a middle-aged man who has just come back from jail where he got into due to drunk driving and has difficult time adjusting & reuniting with his grown up son when they fall in love with the same woman, but through the small clues that were only understandable to Lithuanians it is clear that what the film's creators were really trying to portray the return home of people deported to the gulags due to political reasons by Soviets. This movie about the roots of Lithuanian folk customs was filmed in Lithuanian Film Studio in 1982 but it was banned from cinemas until 1984 because people in charge of Central USSR television regarded it as "too ethnic". The director of this film Gytis Lukšas recounts: "At the time when Lithuania's national broadcaster was not allowed to show even distaffs with traditional ornaments (because the Central Committee of the Communist Party regarded all ethnic items as idolization of the feudal-bourgeois past) a feature-length movie about the 9th century roots of our culture suddenly comes out! It featured the poetry of Marcelijus Martinaitis, ancient polyphonic folk songs & instruments, it was an open challenge! Moscow had requested to make this film but when they saw the end result, they got angry and banned it from the public for several years. However, unofficially people were still watching it in Lithuanian village culture centres, each such screening would turn into folk get-togethers even before the Sajūdis had started. At that time people in Lithuania were already talking about the independence and us being a European nation with deep cultural roots."
