The Shimanami Kaido Cycle Route links the main islands of Honshu and Shikoku in Japan through a series of bridges and islands in the Seto Inland Sea.
The 70km cycle trail takes you between islands across a series of impressive bridges with special cycle lanes and for added fun there's a network of ferries to help you get back. We rented bikes in Onomichi and set off to explore some of the trail which is a great day out for those who enjoy cycling.

Miyajima Island is located south of Hiroshima City in Japan. Miyajima Island, also called as Itsukushima Island, is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Itsukushima Island has the Itsukushima Jinja Shrine. This Shrine's Torii is built in the water and in high tide it looks like it is floating in water. It is the highlight of this Island.
The Ferry to Miyajima Island is operated by Japan Railways (JR). Japan Railways, in addition to operating a big chunk of the railways inside Japan also operates Bus routes and Ferry routes. There is also another Ferry company right alongside JR Ferry but if you are a foreign visitor and have a Japan Rail Pass, take JR Ferry.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the ride and the visit to the Island. Hope you do too.

前回の続きです。フェリーを降りた後、宮島フェリーターミナルから厳島神社まで歩き、参拝します。参道に立ち並ぶさまざまなお店、満潮時の大鳥居、五重塔、初詣で賑わう厳島神社の境内（回廊，本社）などを、実際に参拝する感覚でご覧になれます。（2014年1月4日撮影）
Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine on the island of Itsukushima (popularly known as Miyajima), best known for its "floating" torii gate. The shrine complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Japanese government has designated several buildings and possessions as National Treasures.
The island of Itsukushima, in the Seto inland sea, has been a holy place of Shintoism since the earliest times. The first shrine buildings here were probably erected in the 6th century. The present shrine dates from the 12th century and the harmoniously arranged buildings reveal great artistic and technical skill. The shrine plays on the contrasts in colour and form between mountains and sea and illustrates the Japanese concept of scenic beauty, which combines nature and human creativity.

During our most recent trip to Hiroshima Prefecture, specifically a city called Otake not far from the Yamaguchi Prefecture boarder, we found this beautiful shrine. This shrine is nestled in the mountains not too far from the main road. It's a shinto shrine which is referred to as 大歳神社 which can be translated to "Dasai Shrine" or "Otoshi Shrine". Unfortunately I do not have specifics on this particular shrine at this time.
These shrines, which are marked on maps as "Dasai Shrine" are located throughout the local area and likely throughout Japan. They can range in size from massive to relatively small. Although I cannot seem to find information on the shrine itself I can tell by some of the signage, cleanliness and such that it must be relatively popular amongst the neighborhood at very least.

Hiroshima Prefecture (広島県, Hiroshima-ken?) is a prefecture of Japan located in the Chūgoku region on Honshu island. The capital is the city of Hiroshima.
The area around Hiroshima was formerly divided into Bingo Province and Aki Province. This location has been a center of trade and culture since the beginning of Japan's recorded history. Hiroshima is a traditional center of the Chūgoku region and was the seat of the Mōri clan until the Battle of Sekigahara.
Hiroshima is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites:
Hiroshima prefecture lies in the middle of Chūgoku. Most of the prefecture consists of mountains leading towards Shimane Prefecture; and rivers produce rich plains near the coast.
The province facing Shikoku across the Seto Inland Sea. Hiroshima Bay opens on the Inland Sea. The prefecture also includes many small islands.

Hiroshima (広島市, Hiroshima-shi?) (
listen (help·info)) is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and the largest city in the Chūgoku region of western Honshu, the largest island of Japan. It is best known as the first city in history to be destroyed by a nuclear weapon when the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) dropped an atomic bomb on it at 8:15 A.M. on August 6, 1945, near the end of World War II. Its name 広島 means "Wide Island".
Hiroshima gained city status on April 1, 1889. On April 1, 1980, Hiroshima became a designated city. The city's current mayor since April 2011 is Kazumi Matsui.
Hiroshima was founded on the river delta coastline of the Seto Inland Sea in 1589 by the powerful warlord Mōri Terumoto, who made it his capital after leaving Koriyama Castle in Aki Province.Hiroshima Castle was quickly built, and Terumoto moved in, in 1593. Terumoto was on the losing side at the Battle of Sekigahara. The winner, Tokugawa Ieyasu, deprived Mori Terumoto of most of his fiefs including Hiroshima and gave Aki province to Masanori Fukushima, a daimyo who had supported Tokugawa.

Only a short drive from Kuba Station you will find a great park located in Otake City, Hiroshima Prefecture. This park known as "Kinryu Koen" or 錦竜公園 is located in the mountains of Otake and can be a great place to enjoy some outdoor fun! Access to the park itself is relatively easy to access if you have a small vehicle, however larger vehicles may struggle on the narrow roads leading through the mountains towards the small parking area [34.253450, 132.210484]. Although there is very limited space you can park along the side of the road in the gravel/grassy area to the left. Once parked you can begin your adventure. You are likely to notice a sign, which is rather worn, and two main paths. One path leads to the left and the other leads towards the right where you will also see a bright red bridge. If your goal is to find this waterfall continue towards the red bridge on the right. Follow the path until you find the waterfall [34.257604, 132.210637]. Just before the waterfall you will see a sign that points up a path to the right (it is rather steep and you can't miss it) as well as a path that that leads towards the water. Continue to wards the water if you would like to experience the falls. Although the path to this location is described as "well paved" it is really only so for the first 3/4 of the journey. Past that location the path becomes rocky and much more difficult. THIS IS NOT A STROLLER FRIENDLY LOCATION. This is also not a location good for children to walk freely as there are steep drop-offs offering no protection for wandering children. Although this is a "park" you will not find the comforts of a standard park in this area. There are no toilets. There are no vending machines. It is highly recommended that you bring your own water and anything else you may need for a short hike. The waterfall is also rather popular and therefore you can find a great deal of children playing and adults soaking up the sun. This is not a "quiet" location. The Shimanami Kaido Cycle Route links the main islands of Honshu and Shikoku in Japan through a series of bridges and islands in the Seto Inland Sea. The 70km cycle trail takes you between islands across a series of impressive bridges with special cycle lanes and for added fun there's a network of ferries to help you get back. Riding a Ferry to Miyajima (Itsukushima) Island, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan
Miyajima Island is located south of Hiroshima City in Japan. Miyajima Island, also called as Itsukushima Island, is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Itsukushima Island has the Itsukushima Jinja Shrine. This Shrine's Torii is built in the water and in high tide it looks like it is floating in water. It is the highlight of this Island. The Ferry to Miyajima Island is operated by Japan Railways (JR). Japan Railways, in addition to operating a big chunk of the railways inside Japan also operates Bus routes and Ferry routes. There is also another Ferry company right alongside JR Ferry but if you are a foreign visitor and have a Japan Rail Pass, take JR Ferry. I have thoroughly enjoyed the ride and the visit to the Island. Hope you do too. Enjoy. -

Beautiful Japanese Shrine [Otake Hiroshima Prefecture] 大歳神社
During our most recent trip to Hiroshima Prefecture, specifically a city called Otake not far from the Yamaguchi Prefecture boarder, we found this beautiful shrine. This shrine is nestled in the mountains not too far from the main road. It's a shinto shrine which is referred to as 大歳神社 which can be translated to "Dasai Shrine" or "Otoshi Shrine". Unfortunately I do not have specifics on this particular shrine at this time. These shrines, which are marked on maps as "Dasai Shrine" are located throughout the local area and likely throughout Japan. They can range in size from massive to relatively small. Only a short drive from Kuba Station you will find a great park located in Otake City, Hiroshima Prefecture. This park known as "Kinryu Koen" or 錦竜公園 is located in the mountains of Otake and can be a great place to enjoy some outdoor fun! Access to the park itself is relatively easy to access if you have a small vehicle, however larger vehicles may struggle on the narrow roads leading through the mountains towards the small parking area [34.253450, 132.210484]. Although there is very limited space you can park along the side of the road in the gravel/grassy area to the left. Once parked you can begin your adventure. You are likely to notice a sign, which is rather worn, and two main paths. One path leads to the left and the other leads towards the right where you will also see a bright... -

Snowboarding and skiing at the Osorakan ski resort in the beautiful mountains of central Hiroshima Prefecture, only an hour and a half by car from the main Hiroshima Shinkansen (High-Speed Train) Station. Record snowfalls have been great for winter sports but avalanche warnings are common outside the dignated ski slopes. Snowboarders outnumber skiers two to one. -

During our most recent trip to Hiroshima Prefecture, specifically a city called Otake not far from the Yamaguchi Prefecture boarder, we found this beautiful shr...
During our most recent trip to Hiroshima Prefecture, specifically a city called Otake not far from the Yamaguchi Prefecture boarder, we found this beautiful shrine. This shrine is nestled in the mountains not too far from the main road. It's a shinto shrine which is referred to as 大歳神社 which can be translated to "Dasai Shrine" or "Otoshi Shrine". Unfortunately I do not have specifics on this particular shrine at this time.
These shrines, which are marked on maps as "Dasai Shrine" are located throughout the local area and likely throughout Japan. They can range in size from massive to relatively small. Although I cannot seem to find information on the shrine itself I can tell by some of the signage, cleanliness and such that it must be relatively popular amongst the neighborhood at very least.

Only a short drive from Kuba Station you will find a great park located in Otake City, Hiroshima Prefecture. This park known as "Kinryu Koen" or 錦竜公園 is located in the mountains of Otake and can be a great place to enjoy some outdoor fun!
Access to the park itself is relatively easy to access if you have a small vehicle, however larger vehicles may struggle on the narrow roads leading through the mountains towards the small parking area [34.253450, 132.210484].
Although there is very limited space you can park along the side of the road in the gravel/grassy area to the left. Once parked you can begin your adventure. You are likely to notice a sign, which is rather worn, and two main paths. One path leads to the left and the other leads towards the right where you will also see a bright red bridge. If your goal is to find this waterfall continue towards the red bridge on the right.
Follow the path until you find the waterfall [34.257604, 132.210637]. Just before the waterfall you will see a sign that points up a path to the right (it is rather steep and you can't miss it) as well as a path that that leads towards the water. Continue to wards the water if you would like to experience the falls.
Although the path to this location is described as "well paved" it is really only so for the first 3/4 of the journey. Past that location the path becomes rocky and much more difficult. THIS IS NOT A STROLLER FRIENDLY LOCATION. This is also not a location good for children to walk freely as there are steep drop-offs offering no protection for wandering children.
Although this is a "park" you will not find the comforts of a standard park in this area. There are no toilets. There are no vending machines. It is highly recommended that you bring your own water and anything else you may need for a short hike.
The waterfall is also rather popular and therefore you can find a great deal of children playing and adults soaking up the sun. This is not a "quiet" location.

To most people, Hiroshima means just one thing. The city's name will forever evoke thoughts of 6 August 1945, when Hiroshima became the target of the world's first atomic-bomb attack. Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park is a constant reminder of that day, and it attracts visitors from all over the world. But leafy Hiroshima, with its wide boulevards and laid-back friendliness, is a far from depressing place. Present-day Hiroshima is home to a thriving and internationally minded community, and it's worth spending a couple of nights here to experience the city at its vibrant best.
Atomic Bomb Dome

Perhaps the starkest reminder of the destruction visited upon Hiroshima in WWII is the Atomic Bomb Dome. Built by a Czech architect in 1915, it was the Industrial Promotion Hall until the bomb exploded almost directly above it. Everyone inside was killed, but the building was one of very few left standing near the epicentre. A decision was taken after the war to preserve the shell as a memorial.
The building has since become a haunting symbol of the city, and was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1996. Try to wander past in the evening when it's quiet and the propped-up ruins are floodlit.

The main building of Hiroshima's premier museum houses a collection of items salvaged from the aftermath of the atomic bomb. The displays are confronting and personal – ragged clothes, a child's melted lunch box, a watch stopped at 8.15am – and there are some grim photographs. While upsetting, it's a must-see in Hiroshima. The east building presents a history of Hiroshima and the development and destructive power of nuclear weapons.
The museum is undergoing major renovations. The east building will be closed until spring 2016, at which point the main building will close until a 2018 grand reopening. During its closure, some items from the main building will be on display in the east building. Check the website for the latest developments.

Hugged by rivers on both sides, Peace Memorial Park is a large, leafy space criss-crossed by walkways and dotted with memorials. Its central feature is the long tree-lined Pond of Peace leading to the cenotaph . This curved concrete monument holds the names of all the known victims of the bomb. Also at the pond is the Flame of Peace , set to burn on until all the world's nuclear weapons are destroyed.
Look through the cenotaph down the pond and you'll see it frames the Flame of Peace and the Atomic Bomb Dome across the river – the park was planned so that these features form a straight line, with the Peace Memorial Museum at its southern end.
Just north of the road through the park is the Children's Peace Monument , inspired by Sadako Sasaki, who was two years old at the time of the atomic bomb. When Sadako developed leukaemia at 11 years of age, she decided to fold 1000 paper cranes. In Japan, the crane is the symbol of longevity and happiness, and she believed if she achieved that target she would recover. She died before reaching her goal, but her classmates folded the rest. A monument was built in 1958. Sadako's story inspired a nationwide spate of paper-crane folding that continues to this day. Surrounding the monument are strings of thousands of colourful paper cranes sent here from school children around the country and all over the world.
Nearby is the Korean Atomic Bomb Victims Memorial . Many Koreans were shipped over to work as slave labourers during WWII, and Koreans accounted for more than one in 10 of those killed by the atomic bomb. Just north of this memorial is the Atomic Bomb Memorial Mound – the ashes of thousands of unclaimed or unidentified victims are interred in a vault below.
There are other monuments and statues throughout the park, and plenty of benches, including along the riverside looking across to the Atomic Bomb Dome, making this a pleasant area to take a break and reflect.

As of 2006, the city has an estimated population of 1,154,391, while the total population for the metropolitan area was estimated as 2,043,788 in 2000.The total area of the city is 905.08 km², with a population density of 1275.4 persons per km².The population around 1910 was 143,000. Before World War II, Hiroshima's population had grown to 360,000, and peaked at 419,182 in 1942.Following the atomic bombing in 1945, the population dropped to 137,197.By 1955, the city's population had returned to pre-war levels.
Hiroshima has a professional symphony orchestra, which has performed at Wel City Hiroshima since 1963. There are also many museums in Hiroshima, including the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, along with several art museums. The Hiroshima Museum of Art, which has a large collection of French renaissance art, opened in 1978. The Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum opened in 1968, and is located near Shukkei-en gardens. The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, which opened in 1989, is located near Hijiyama Park. Festivals include Hiroshima Flower Festival and Hiroshima International Animation Festival.Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which includes the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, draws many visitors from around the world, especially for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony, an annual commemoration held on the date of the atomic bombing. The park also contains a large collection of monuments, including the Children's Peace Monument, the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims and many others.
Hiroshima's rebuilt castle (nicknamed Rijō, meaning Koi Castle) houses a museum of life in the Edo period. Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine is within the walls of the castle. Other attractions in Hiroshima include Shukkei-en, Fudōin, Mitaki-dera, and Hijiyama Park.
The atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were conducted by the United States during the final stages of World War II in 1945. The two events are the only use of nuclear weapons in war to date.Following a firebombing campaign that destroyed many Japanese cities, the Allies prepared for a costly invasion of Japan. The war in Europe ended when Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender on 8 May, but the Pacific War continued. Together with the United Kingdom and the Republic of China, the United States called for a surrender of Japan in the Potsdam Declaration on 26 July 1945, threatening Japan with "prompt and utter destruction". The Japanese government ignored this ultimatum, and the United States deployed two nuclear weapons developed by the Manhattan Project. American airmen dropped Little Boy on the city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, followed by Fat Man over Nagasaki on 9 August.
Within the first two to four months of the bombings, the acute effects killed 90,000--166,000 people in Hiroshima and 60,000--80,000 in Nagasaki, with roughly half of the deaths in each city occurring on the first day. The Hiroshima prefecture health department estimated that, of the people who died on the day of the explosion, 60% died from flash or flame burns, 30% from falling debris and 10% from other causes. During the following months, large numbers died from the effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness. Hiroshima
As of 2006, the city has an estimated population of 1,154,391, while the total population for the metropolitan area was estimated as 2,043,788 in 2000.The total area of the city is 905.08 km², with a population density of 1275.4 persons per km².The population around 1910 was 143,000. Before World War II, Hiroshima's population had grown to 360,000, and peaked at 419,182 in 1942.Following the atomic bombing in 1945, the population dropped to 137,197.By 1955, the city's population had returned to pre-war levels.
Hiroshima has a professional symphony orchestra, which has performed at Wel City Hiroshima since 1963. There are also many museums in Hiroshima, including the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, along with several art museums. The Hiroshima Museum of Art, which has a large collection of French renaissance art, opened in 1978. The Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum opened in 1968, and is located near Shukkei-en gardens. The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, which opened in 1989, is located near Hijiyama Park. Festivals include Hiroshima Flower Festival and Hiroshima International Animation Festival.Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which includes the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, draws many visitors from around the world, especially for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony, an annual commemoration held on the date of the atomic bombing. The park also contains a large collection of monuments, including the Children's Peace Monument, the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims and many others.
Hiroshima's rebuilt castle (nicknamed Rijō, meaning Koi Castle) houses a museum of life in the Edo period. Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine is within the walls of the castle. Other attractions in Hiroshima include Shukkei-en, Fudōin, Mitaki-dera, and Hijiyama Park.
The atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were conducted by the United States during the final stages of World War II in 1945. The two events are the only use of nuclear weapons in war to date.Following a firebombing campaign that destroyed many Japanese cities, the Allies prepared for a costly invasion of Japan. The war in Europe ended when Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender on 8 May, but the Pacific War continued. Together with the United Kingdom and the Republic of China, the United States called for a surrender of Japan in the Potsdam Declaration on 26 July 1945, threatening Japan with "prompt and utter destruction". The Japanese government ignored this ultimatum, and the United States deployed two nuclear weapons developed by the Manhattan Project. American airmen dropped Little Boy on the city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, followed by Fat Man over Nagasaki on 9 August.

Hiroshima
Hiroshima (広島市 Hiroshima-shi) is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and the largest city in the Chūgoku region of western Honshu, the largest island of Japan.
Hiroshima is situated on the Ōta River delta, on Hiroshima Bay, facing the Seto Inland Sea on its south side. The river's six channels divide Hiroshima into several islets.
Climate
Hiroshima has a humid subtropical climate characterized by mild winters and hot humid summers. Like much of the rest of Japan, Hiroshima experiences a seasonal temperature lag in summer, with August rather than July being the warmest month of the year. Precipitation occurs year-round, although winter is the driest season. Rainfall peaks in June and July, with August experiencing sunnier and drier conditions.

Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji located on Honshu Island, is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft).An active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707--08, Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometres (60 mi) south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped several months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers. It is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" (三霊山 Sanreizan) along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku; it is a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, a Historic Site, and was added to the World Heritage List as a Cultural Site on June 22nd, 2013.
The mountain has been selected as a "cultural" rather than a "natural" heritage site. As per UNESCO, Mount Fuji has "inspired artists and poets and been the object of pilgrimage for centuries". Hiroshima
Hiroshima (広島市 Hiroshima-shi) is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and the largest city in the Chūgoku region of western Honshu, the largest island of Japan.
Hiroshima is situated on the Ōta River delta, on Hiroshima Bay, facing the Seto Inland Sea on its south side. The river's six channels divide Hiroshima into several islets.
Climate
Hiroshima has a humid subtropical climate characterized by mild winters and hot humid summers. Like much of the rest of Japan, Hiroshima experiences a seasonal temperature lag in summer, with August rather than July being the warmest month of the year. Precipitation occurs year-round, although winter is the driest season. Rainfall peaks in June and July, with August experiencing sunnier and drier conditions.

Miyajima Island
The Island of Gods, well known for its floating shrine and Otorii.
Miyajima Island, one of the most scenic spots in Japan, has long been regarded as an Island of Gods on the beautiful Seto Inland Sea. It is a romantic and historical island where Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site, is located, along with the Virgin Forest of Mt. Misen, and numerous preserved shrines, temples and historical monuments.

Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji located on Honshu Island, is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft).An active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707--08, Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometres (60 mi) south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped several months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers. It is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" (三霊山 Sanreizan) along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku; it is a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, a Historic Site, and was added to the World Heritage List as a Cultural Site on June 22nd, 2013.
The mountain has been selected as a "cultural" rather than a "natural" heritage site. As per UNESCO, Mount Fuji has "inspired artists and poets and been the object of pilgrimage for centuries". This episode of Journeys in Japan travels to Hiroshima, a city attracting attention as a treasure trove of quality architecture. Now nearly 70 years since the devastation of the atomic bomb, the program visits the city sights from the 3 viewpoints of architecture, war and tourism, exploring the city's history of urban development and architecture as it was rebuilt after the world's first nuclear attack. Our traveler on his first trip to Hiroshima is Charles Glover, an actor from the United States.
Hiroshima is one of Japan's top industrial cities which had developed as a huge military base before the atomic bombing. Our traveler visits the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome) and Peace Memorial Museum, and while gaining a renewed realization of the fierce destructive power of the atomic bomb, he observes the masterful spatial designs and their inherent message never to repeat the tragedy again. He also visits the high-rise complex that was built where there had been the post-war slums, ponders over his perception of Hiroshima as someone from a nation that won World War II, and discusses the topic of peace with the students at a high school with an innovative design, learning how one of the top military cities in the country had transformed into a city aspiring to create a world of peace.
Charles from the United States goes on this journey with the questions "How had the city managed to recover from such a tragedy?" and "How had the wish for peace been passed down to the people of Hiroshima today?" in mind. He reflects upon the human stupidity of the past and searches for the possibility or hope for eternal peace.

Miyajima is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views.
While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for "shrine island". This is because the island is so closely related to its key shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, in the public's mind. Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are built over water.
Miyajima is a romantic place, best enjoyed by staying overnight at one of the island's ryokan. While there are usually many day tourists, in the evening the area becomes much quieter and more peaceful. There are also wild deer on the island that have become accustomed to people. In the day the deer wander around the same sites as the tourists, and in the evening they sleep along the walking paths.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Itsukushima is a large, red-lacquered complex of halls and pathways on stilts, originally so built that commoners could visit without defiling the island with their footprints. Weddings are occasionally held at the shrine, but that doesn't bar visitors, and the priest's ceremonial dance is a memorable sight. ¥300 for temple entry, ¥500 for entry plus Treasure Hall.
Senjokaku (千畳閣). The name means "1000 Mat Pavilion", a fairly apt description of this gigantic wooden hall which doesn't actually contain much other than empty space. It was originally built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587, but left incomplete after his death. There's also a picturesque 5-story pagoda (五重塔 Gojuto) next door, and plenty of cherry trees if you are visiting in sakura season. ¥100.
Daisho-in (大聖院), ☎ +81 0829-44-0111, Because it's nestled into the hills, this Buddhist temple is easily missed by tourists, but it features a number of interesting sights and a welcome respite from the crowds. Look for the Dai-hannyakyo Sutra (大般若経), the golden prayer wheels that are said to bring enormous fortune to anyone who touches them, and the Henjokutsu Cave (遍照窟), a fascinating and eerie collection of Buddhist icons related to the 88 Temple Pilgrimage in Shikoku. Free.
Miyajima Public Aquarium (宮島水族館), 10-3 Miyajima-cho, ☎ +81 0829-44-2010, 8:30AM-5PM daily. A collection of more than 350 sea creatures and daily animal events such as seal shows and penguin marches. It's worth a stop if you have restless kids in tow — about a twenty minute walk from the pier. ¥1050.
Museum of History and Folklore, 57 Miyajima-cho, ☎ +81 0829-44-2019. Tu-Su 8:30AM-5PM. A small, charming collection of folk crafts and pieces of Miyajima history, many donated by locals. The main building was originally the residence of a soy sauce mogul, built about 170 years ago, and has a traditional garden out back. ¥300 (¥170/150 for children).
