24 year old Jenna gave up her job as a vet's assistant to become a paramedic. An hour into her first shift, Jenna and mentor Cleone rush to the aid of an elderly man in cardiac arrest. At college she practised CPR on dummies ... but now for the first time a human life rests in her hands.
Starting his new career is former tyre fitter, John Williams. Under the mentorship of Jordan, John heads out on his first emergency call - a 26 year old girl is critically ill with fever.
As one group of trainees hit the road, the next class of students start their journey at college. Former firey, Reynir, has been waiting seven years for this moment. And from day one the pressure is on. Educators stage a fake heart attack in the classroom to test the student's reaction time. When only 2 out of 50 trainees go to the aid of the victim the immensity of the challenge ahead becomes apparent.

Leaderless Palestinian youth, inspired by instructional videos and photos on social media encouraging people to "Stab a Jew," are thought to be behind a new wave of violence in Israel and the West Bank. Uncoordinated and spontaneous attacks by individual young Palestinians, mostly under the age of 25, started to occur almost daily from October 2015, with assailants often using a household weapon — a knife, axe, meat cleaver, screwdriver — before being fired upon by nearby Israeli security forces. So far, the bloodshed has claimed the lives of at least 28 Israelis and 189 Palestinians, 128 of whom Israel says were assailants.
Israelis believe that Palestinian Muslim youth are being radicalized by Islamic groups through online incitement campaigns. Micah Avni, the son of Richard Lakin who was killed in an attack on a public bus in East Jerusalem in October, has filed a civil action lawsuit against Facebook. He and 20,000 other Israelis are suing the platform CEO.
In this extra scene, VICE News meets a paramedic who has attended the aftermath of dozens of these incidents and describes the scene after a fatal attack on bus passengers in East Jerusalem in October 2015.

A paramedic is a healthcare professional that works in emergency medical situations. Paramedics provide advanced levels of care for medical emergencies and trauma. The majority of paramedics are based in the field in ambulances, emergency response vehicles, or in specialist mobile units such as cycle response. Paramedics provide out-of-hospital treatment and some diagnostic services, although some may undertake hospital-based roles, such as in the treatment of minor injuries.
Throughout the evolution of paramedic care, there has been an ongoing association with military conflict. One of the first indications of a formal process for managing injured people dates from the Imperial Legions of Rome, where aging Centurions, no longer able to fight, were given the task of organizing the removal of the wounded from the battlefield and providing some form of care. Such individuals, although not physicians, were probably among the world's earliest surgeons by default, being required to suture wounds and complete amputations. A similar situation existed in the Crusades, with the Knights Hospitallers of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem filling a similar function; this organisation continued, and evolved into what is now known throughout the Commonwealth of Nations as the St. John Ambulance.

James Joseph Brown (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and recording artist. He is the originator of funk music and is a major figure of 20th century popular music and dance.
In a career that spanned decades, Brown profoundly influenced the development of many different musical genres. Brown moved on a continuum of blues and gospel-based forms and styles to a profoundly "Africanized" approach to music making. Brown performed in concerts, first making his rounds across the Chitlin' Circuit, and then across the country and later around the world, along with appearing in shows on television and in movies. Although he contributed much to the music world through his hitmaking, Brown holds the record as the artist who charted the most singles on the Billboard Hot 100 without ever hitting number one on that chart.
For many years, Brown's touring show was one of the most extravagant productions in American popular music. At the time of Brown's death, his band included three guitarists, two bass guitar players, two drummers, three horns and a percussionist. The bands that he maintained during the late 1960s and 1970s were of comparable size, and the bands also included a three-piece amplified string section that played during ballads. Brown employed between 40 and 50 people for the James Brown Revue, and members of the revue traveled with him in a bus to cities and towns all over the country, performing upwards of 330 shows a year with almost all of the shows as one-nighters. In 1986, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 1990 into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Chicago emergency personnel are being assaulted on the job and first responders say it's getting worse. You could hardly blame paramedics if they felt some paranoia on every call. First responders tell the I-Team that at least once a day in the City of Chicago, paramedics trying to save lives, end up fighting to stay alive. It's happening across the country and right here. Related Content More: EMS Self-Defense Training "It's so unpredictable," said Brandy Kasper, paramedic. "Six people turned into 12, a mini mob kind of formed, and the physical violence started," said Larry Kaczmarek, paramedic. "We had nothing. No warning," said Melanie Howe, paramedic. Sirens blare, paramedics roll, help is on the way. The I-Team rode with Ambulance 49 in Englewood among Chicago paramedics trained to save lives, but always on the defensive in case they need to fight for their own. "You have something that seems like a benign situation and then all of a sudden it escalates. We have nothing to protect ourselves," said In late August, paramedic Brandy Kasper was treating someone she says appeared intoxicated -- who didn't want to go to the hospital-- and during a routine blood pressure check, she was blind-sided. "As I leaned down, she cold cocked me, right in the face. She punched me right in the face and gave me a nice black eye to take home to my daughters. When she connected, I felt the thumbnail, it kind of came down across here, and I just-I kind of saw stars for a second," said Kasper. One man was mad at paramedics in Oklahoma because their ambulance call had closed off the road, and similar incidents have happened to 52 percent of all EMS workers according to the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians. Here in Chicago, paramedics tell the I-Team, it's much worse. They say citywide, there's at least one assault every day. "He says I'm going to kill you white [expletive], over and over again," said Howe. Paramedic Melanie Howe says a patient and his family pinned her to the floor of her ambulance until firefighters had to rip the attackers off of her. "If they had not stayed with me, I don't know what they would have done to me, I'm scared to think every day that I go to work is different since that day," said Howe. While there is no paramedic self-defense training for Chicago paramedics, this private company has trained EMTs elsewhere. "You don't really realize it's happening, but it does happen, way too frequently," said Jeff Larsen, CFD assistant deputy paramedic. Chicago Fire Department officials say after incidents when paramedics are attacked, they push for felony charges. "The law allows any assault on police or fire to be prosecuted as a felony charge, not just a misdemeanor battery or anything like that," said Larsen. Cook County State's Attorney records show in the past two years, 60 paramedic assault cases have been charged as felonies, with the majority of them ending in a conviction or guilty plea. "I've heard a judge say, 'It's an inherent risk in your job.' I don't believe that," said Kaczmarek. After a hostile mob attacked paramedic Larry Kaczmarek, he says the bashing only resulted in community service for most of those charged. Kaczmarek wants stiffer penalties. "Going out this door, going through a light and getting into a car accident that's a part of the job, going to somebody's house trying to take care of a loved one and getting assaulted, that's not part of my job," said Kaczmarek. City fire officials say police and prosecutors determine the severity of charges after an attack. A spokesperson for the Cook County State's Attorney maintains that her office has never rejected felony charges in a paramedic attack when police have asked. On Wednesday night, officials of the Chicago Firefighters Union says when one of their members is beat up, they plan to pack the courtroom.

Leaderless Palestinian youth, inspired by instructional videos and photos on social media encouraging people to "Stab a Jew," are thought to be behind a new wave of violence in Israel and the West Bank. CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Chicago emergency personnel are being assaulted on the job and first responders say it's getting worse.
You could hardly blame paramedics if they felt some paranoia on every call. First responders tell the I-Team that at least once a day in the City of Chicago, paramedics trying to save lives, end up fighting to stay alive.
It's happening across the country and right here.

"It's so unpredictable," said Brandy Kasper, paramedic.
"Six people turned into 12, a mini mob kind of formed, and the physical violence started," said Larry Kaczmarek, paramedic.
"We had nothing. No warning," said Melanie Howe, paramedic.
Sirens blare, paramedics roll, help is on the way. The I-Team rode with Ambulance 49 in Englewood among Chicago paramedics trained to save lives, but always on the defensive in case they need to fight for their own.
"You have something that seems like a benign situation and then all of a sudden it escalates. We have nothing to protect ourselves," said
In late August, paramedic Brandy Kasper was treating someone she says appeared intoxicated -- who didn't want to go to the hospital-- and during a routine blood pressure check, she was blind-sided.
"As I leaned down, she cold cocked me, right in the face. She punched me right in the face and gave me a nice black eye to take home to my daughters. When she connected, I felt the thumbnail, it kind of came down across here, and I just-I kind of saw stars for a second," said Kasper.
One man was mad at paramedics in Oklahoma because their ambulance call had closed off the road, and similar incidents have happened to 52 percent of all EMS workers according to the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians. Here in Chicago, paramedics tell the I-Team, it's much worse. They say citywide, there's at least one assault every day.
"He says I'm going to kill you white [expletive], over and over again," said Howe. Paramedic Melanie Howe says a patient and his family pinned her to the floor of her ambulance until firefighters had to rip the attackers off of her.
"If they had not stayed with me, I don't know what they would have done to me, I'm scared to think every day that I go to work is different since that day," said Howe.
While there is no paramedic self-defense training for Chicago paramedics, this private company has trained EMTs elsewhere.
"You don't really realize it's happening, but it does happen, way too frequently," said Jeff Larsen, CFD assistant deputy paramedic.
Chicago Fire Department officials say after incidents when paramedics are attacked, they push for felony charges.
"The law allows any assault on police or fire to be prosecuted as a felony charge, not just a misdemeanor battery or anything like that," said Larsen.
Cook County State's Attorney records show in the past two years, 60 paramedic assault cases have been charged as felonies, with the majority of them ending in a conviction or guilty plea.
"I've heard a judge say, 'It's an inherent risk in your job.' I don't believe that," said Kaczmarek.
After a hostile mob attacked paramedic Larry Kaczmarek, he says the bashing only resulted in community service for most of those charged. Kaczmarek wants stiffer penalties.
"Going out this door, going through a light and getting into a car accident that's a part of the job, going to somebody's house trying to take care of a loved one and getting assaulted, that's not part of my job," said Kaczmarek.
City fire officials say police and prosecutors determine the severity of charges after an attack. A spokesperson for the Cook County State's Attorney maintains that her office has never rejected felony charges in a paramedic attack when police have asked. On Wednesday night, officials of the Chicago Firefighters Union says when one of their members is beat up, they plan to pack the courtroom.
