Emperor Ōgimachi (正親町天皇 Ōgimachi-tennō) (June 18, 1517 – February 6, 1593) was the 106th Emperor of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession. He reigned from October 27, 1557 to December 17, 1586, corresponding to the transition between the Warring States Era and the Azuchi-Momoyama period. His personal name was Michihito (方仁).
The finances of the emperor and his court were greatly strained. The authority of the Imperial Court also began to fall, but this trend reversed after Oda Nobunaga entered Kyoto in a show of allegiance to the Emperor but which also indicated that the Emperor had the support of the Oda clan. Frequently using the Emperor as a mediator when fighting enemies, Oda Nobunaga worked to unify the disparate elements to Japan. However, by around 1573, Oda Nobunaga began demanding the Emperor's abdication, but the Emperor refused.
Before political power was transferred to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in order to take advantage of the Emperor's authority, the power of the Imperial Family was increased. In this way, Hideyoshi and the Imperial Family entered into a mutually beneficial relationship.

At the time of his birth in 1852, Japan was an isolated, pre-industrial, feudal country dominated by the Tokugawa Shogunate and the daimyo, who ruled over the country's more than 250 decentralized domains. By the time of his death in 1912, Japan had undergone a political, social, and industrial revolution at home (See Meiji Restoration) and emerged as one of the great powers on the world stage. The New York Times summed up this transformation at his funeral in 1912, with the words: "the contrast between that which preceded the funeral car and that which followed it was striking indeed. Before it went old Japan; after it came new Japan."

The views seen along the line change each season, and the train is particularly popular during the autumn color season from mid November to early December when the color of leaves along the gorge turned into the autumn color. Trains are not in service in winter from December 31 to the end of February.

The Sagano Scenic Railway (also known as the Sagano Romantic Train or Sagano Torokko) is a sightseeing train line that runs alongside of the Hozugawa River between Arashiyama and Kameoka. Its charming, old fashioned trains wind their way through the mountains at a relatively low speed, which is a journey of seven kilometer distance for about 25 minutes, so that the passengers can enjoy a pleasant view of the scenery while they travel from Arashiyama through the forested gorge and into rural Kameoka.
It was originally part of the JR Sanin Line before it was replaced by a faster, straighter route in 1989. Then, the railway route of this scenic area was preserved and outfitted with nostalgic trains featuring wooden benches. The views seen along the line change each season, and the train is particularly popular during the autumn color season from mid November to early December when the color of leaves along the gorge turned into the autumn color. Trains are not in service in winter from December 31 to the end of February.
