Warning: Many voices are a combination of these vocal types. However, generally speaking, most voices tend to “favor" one of these.
What is a Vocal Type?
A vocal type is not whether you are a soprano, alto, tenor or bass.
A vocal type describes what your vocal cords and the sound vibrations (resonance) tend to do in your body when you sing.
What are the Vocal Types?
There are 4 vocal types:
1. Pulled Chest/High Larynx: You tend to pull the low voice (chest voice) higher than is appropriate. And/or the larynx is raised higher than it should be. Usually it feels and sounds like you are reaching up for the note, or it sounds yelled, strained and difficult.
2. Light Chest/No Chest: Your vocal cords don't come together firmly resulting in a breathy or soft tone. Or they don't come together at all in the lower ranges.
3. Flip/Falsetto: Your vocal cords break or separate as you sing higher resulting in a break or interruption in the tone. In the case of falsetto, the vocal cords slightly come together but are essentially disconnected. This results is a tone with little bottom tonal quality which cannot blend with the lower voice without reconnecting.
4. Mix: Your vocal cords are able to adjust from your lower to upper voice without interruption in sound. The "weight" or mass of the vocal cords thins as you sing higher, the cords stay together (don't disconnect) and you get a blend of both the lower (chest) voice and upper (head) voice. Because you get a blend of both head and chest voice it is referred to as a Mix...that is a mix of chest and head voice.
Why is knowing my vocal type critical to my singing success?
Vocal exercises tend to cause the vocal cords and the resonance to do specific things in your body. You don’t want to do exercises that are going to keep you doing the same wrong thing. You want exercises that will get you doing the right thing. This gives you results quickly.
For example: Suppose you came to me as your track coach for exercises to help you jump higher. But instead I gave you exercises that helped you run faster instead…but had no impact on your jumping. How long will it take to see results? Maybe never. But if I give you the exercises designed specifically for your exact needs, soon you will be jumping higher.
It’s that simple. Knowing what you tend to do vocally helps you know what exercises you need for your voice to improve rapidly.

Which vocal types are bad?
There are no bad vocal cords or resonance. The vocal types only describes a physical process inside your body not a judgement about the quality of the voice or artistry of the singer. Your vocal type describes what your vocal cords and resonance tends to do when you sing.
What do I do after I know my Vocal Type?
After discovering your vocal type using the free PowerTest and Quiz [link to it], study more about it in the Knowledge Center. Once you have a better understanding of what you tend to do when you sing, select exercises in the Knowledge Center designed for your vocal type. These exercises are tailored specifically for your unique needs and can lead to rapid improvement in your voice. Free downloads of exercises for each vocal type are available in the Knowledge Center. Many singers see immediate results. I recommend doing these exercises daily for several weeks. If done correctly you will see incredible results.

Use this to find your vocal range - it only takes 1 minute.
If you sing solo you need to know your range so that you can put songs into keys that suit your voice best.
If you sing in a choir, you need to know your range to find the right section of the choir for you e.g. soprano, alto etc. If you practice singing your vocal range may increase over time.
Choir Section vocal ranges are shown in a table at the end of the video so you can see where your vocal range fits in.

How to explore your unique singing voice

In today’s video, we’re going to be talking about how you can explore your own unique singing voice. It’s my favorite topic! But I would like to start by saying it is my belief that your unique voice is already there within you. In our work together, we’re going to be sifting through all that extra information so that your unique voice can reveal itself to you. In today’s video, we’ll talk about 3 ways that you can explore your most unique sound.
1. Pay attention. That seems simple enough right? Nope. It’s not that easy. Our minds want to go every which way. But see if you can pay attention to how your voice feels and sounds to you in everyday conversation. This will give you a better sense of how your voice actually feels. Is it high and light? Is it deep and dark? Is it forward and brassy a little bit? Also, your voice will shift and change based off of your intention. By that I mean, if I’m talking to someone that I love, I’m going to approach my voice differently than if I feel angry or threatened. If you have a type of day to day experience that doesn’t come in contact with too many people, you can simply read aloud and observe the natural speech patterns of your own voice. Remember, all great singing is not that different in essence than speaking. So start by observing your natural speech.
2. Model other artists. I say this with a tad bit of caution. We don’t want to become clones of other artists. Today’s video is all about finding YOUR unique sound. The whole idea is to be different. However, we can explore a lot about our own voices simply by modeling others artists. We can use their sound filtered through our own bodies as a means of exploring a new area. Treat it like play time! Get in touch with that new area of your voice and then add your unique personality to it.
3. Get in touch with who you are. This is my favorite! This is the end to which we work! We want strong, capable voices true. But we want to be able to express freely who we are. In the end, that is more important to us. So start by making a list. It doesn’t have to be a long list. But focus on different essences that you would use to describe yourself. For example, I am…playful, child like, mischievous, sassy. These characteristics may be dominant in your personality and they will most certainly carry over into your sound. Then ask your friends and family to describe your personality in one word as well. This will let you know if there are common themes in the way you see yourself, as well as the way others are responding to you.

Voice type
A voice type is a particular human singing voice identified as having certain qualities or characteristics of vocal range, vocal weight, tessitura, vocal timbre, and vocal transition points (passaggio), such as breaks and lifts within the voice. Other considerations are physical characteristics, speech level, scientific testing, and vocal register. A singer's voice type is identified by a process known as voice classification, by which the human voice is evaluated and thereby designated into a particular voice type. The discipline of voice classification developed within European classical music and is not generally applicable to other forms of singing. Voice classification is often used within opera to associate possible roles with potential voices. Several different voice classification systems are available to identify voice types, including the German Fach system and the choral music system among many others; no system is universally applied or accepted.
Voice classification is a tool for singers, composers, venues, and listeners to categorize vocal properties and to associate roles with voices. While useful, voice classification systems have been used too rigidly, i.e. a house assigning a singer to a specific type and only casting him or her in roles they consider belonging to this category. While choral singers are classified into voice parts based on their vocal range, solo singers are classified into voice types based more on their tessitura – where their voice feels most comfortable for the majority of the time.

Vocal range
Vocal range is the measure of the breadth of pitches that a human voice can phonate. Although the study of vocal range has little practical application in terms of speech, it is a topic of study within linguistics, phonetics, and speech and language pathology, particularly in relation to the study of tonal languages and certain types of vocal disorders. However, the most common application of the phrase "vocal range" is within the context of singing, where it is used as one of the major defining characteristics for classifying singing voices into groups known as voice types.
Singing and the definition of vocal range
While the broadest definition of vocal range is simply the span from the lowest to the highest note a particular voice can produce, this broad definition is often not what is meant when "vocal range" is discussed in the context of singing. Vocal pedagogists tend to define the vocal range as the total span of "musically useful" pitches that a singer can produce. This is because some of the notes a voice can produce may not be considered usable by the singer within performance for various reasons. For example, within opera all singers must project over an orchestra without the aid of a microphone. An opera singer would therefore only be able to include the notes that they are able to adequately project over an orchestra within his or her vocal range. In contrast, a pop artist could include notes that could be heard with the aid of a microphone.

Warning: Many voices are a combination of these vocal types. However, generally speaking, most voices tend to “favor" one of these.
What is a Vocal Type?
A vocal type is not whether you are a soprano, alto, tenor or bass.
A vocal type describes what your vocal cords and the sound vibrations (resonance) tend to do in your body when you sing.
What are the Vocal Types?
There are 4 vocal types:
1. Pulled Chest/High Larynx: You tend to pull the low voice (chest voice) higher than is appropriate. And/or the larynx is raised higher than it should be. Usually it feels and sounds like you are reaching up for the note, or it sounds yelled, strained and difficult.
2. Light Chest/No Chest: Your vocal cords don't come together firmly resulting in a breathy or soft tone. Or they don't come together at all in the lower ranges.
3. Flip/Falsetto: Your vocal cords break or separate as you sing higher resulting in a break or interruption in the tone. In the case of falsetto, the vocal cords slightly come together but are essentially disconnected. This results is a tone with little bottom tonal quality which cannot blend with the lower voice without reconnecting.
4. Mix: Your vocal cords are able to adjust from your lower to upper voice without interruption in sound. The "weight" or mass of the vocal cords thins as you sing higher, the cords stay together (don't disconnect) and you get a blend of both the lower (chest) voice and upper (head) voice. Because you get a blend of both head and chest voice it is referred to as a Mix...that is a mix of chest and head voice.
Why is knowing my vocal type critical to my singing success?
Vocal exercises tend to cause the vocal cords and the resonance to do specific things in your body. You don’t want to do exercises that are going to keep you doing the same wrong thing. You want exercises that will get you doing the right thing. This gives you results quickly.
For example: Suppose you came to me as your track coach for exercises to help you jump higher. But instead I gave you exercises that helped you run faster instead…but had no impact on your jumping. How long will it take to see results? Maybe never. But if I give you the exercises designed specifically for your exact needs, soon you will be jumping higher.
It’s that simple. Knowing what you tend to do vocally helps you know what exercises you need for your voice to improve rapidly.

Which vocal types are bad?
There are no bad vocal cords or resonance. The vocal types only describes a physical process inside your body not a judgement about the quality of the voice or artistry of the singer. Your vocal type describes what your vocal cords and resonance tends to do when you sing.
What do I do after I know my Vocal Type?
After discovering your vocal type using the free PowerTest and Quiz [link to it], study more about it in the Knowledge Center. Once you have a better understanding of what you tend to do when you sing, select exercises in the Knowledge Center designed for your vocal type. These exercises are tailored specifically for your unique needs and can lead to rapid improvement in your voice. Free downloads of exercises for each vocal type are available in the Knowledge Center. Many singers see immediate results. I recommend doing these exercises daily for several weeks. If done correctly you will see incredible results.

How to explore your unique singing voice

In today’s video, we’re going to be talking about how you can explore your own unique singing voice. It’s my favorite topic! But I would like to start by saying it is my belief that your unique voice is already there within you. In our work together, we’re going to be sifting through all that extra information so that your unique voice can reveal itself to you. In today’s video, we’ll talk about 3 ways that you can explore your most unique sound.
1. Pay attention. That seems simple enough right? Nope. It’s not that easy. Our minds want to go every which way. But see if you can pay attention to how your voice feels and sounds to you in everyday conversation. This will give you a better sense of how your voice actually feels. Is it high and light? Is it deep and dark? Is it forward and brassy a little bit? Also, your voice will shift and change based off of your intention. By that I mean, if I’m talking to someone that I love, I’m going to approach my voice differently than if I feel angry or threatened. If you have a type of day to day experience that doesn’t come in contact with too many people, you can simply read aloud and observe the natural speech patterns of your own voice. Remember, all great singing is not that different in essence than speaking. So start by observing your natural speech.
2. Model other artists. I say this with a tad bit of caution. We don’t want to become clones of other artists. Today’s video is all about finding YOUR unique sound. The whole idea is to be different. However, we can explore a lot about our own voices simply by modeling others artists. We can use their sound filtered through our own bodies as a means of exploring a new area. Treat it like play time! Get in touch with that new area of your voice and then add your unique personality to it.
3. Get in touch with who you are. This is my favorite! This is the end to which we work! We want strong, capable voices true. But we want to be able to express freely who we are. In the end, that is more important to us. So start by making a list. It doesn’t have to be a long list. But focus on different essences that you would use to describe yourself. For example, I am…playful, child like, mischievous, sassy. These characteristics may be dominant in your personality and they will most certainly carry over into your sound. Then ask your friends and family to describe your personality in one word as well. This will let you know if there are common themes in the way you see yourself, as well as the way others are responding to you.

A vocal type is not whether you are a soprano, alto, tenor or bass.
A vocal type describes what your vocal cords and the sound vibrations (resonance) tend to do in your body when you sing.
What are the Vocal Types?
There are 4 vocal types:
1. Pulled Chest/High Larynx: You tend to pull the low voice (chest voice) higher than is appropriate. And/or the larynx is raised higher than it should be. Usually it feels and sounds like you are reaching up for the note, or it sounds yelled, strained and difficult.
2. Light Chest/No Chest: Your vocal cords don't come together firmly resulting in a breathy or soft tone. Or they don't come together at all in the lower ranges.
3. Flip/Falsetto: Your vocal cords break or separate as you sing higher resulting in a break or interruption in the tone. In the case of falsetto, the vocal cords slightly come together but are essentially disconnected. This results is a tone with little bottom tonal quality which cannot blend with the lower voice without reconnecting.
4. Mix: Your vocal cords are able to adjust from your lower to upper voice without interruption in sound. The "weight" or mass of the vocal cords thins as you sing higher, the cords stay together (don't disconnect) and you get a blend of both the lower (chest) voice and upper (head) voice. Because you get a blend of both head and chest voice it is referred to as a Mix...that is a mix of chest and head voice.
Why is knowing my vocal type critical to my singing success?
Vocal exercises tend to cause the vocal cords and the resonance to do specific things in your body. You don’t want to do exercises that are going to keep you doing the same wrong thing. You want exercises that will get you doing the right thing. This gives you results quickly.
For example: Suppose you came to me as your track coach for exercises to help you jump higher. But instead I gave you exercises that helped you run faster instead…but had no impact on your jumping. How long will it take to see results? Maybe never. But if I give you the exercises designed specifically for your exact needs, soon you will be jumping higher.
It’s that simple. Knowing what you tend to do vocally helps you know what exercises you need for your voice to improve rapidly.

How to explore your unique singing voice

In today’s video, we’re going to be talking about how you can explore your own unique singing voice. It’s my favorite topic! But I would like to start by saying it is my belief that your unique voice is already there within you. In our work together, we’re going to be sifting through all that extra information so that your unique voice can reveal itself to you. In today’s video, we’ll talk about 3 ways that you can explore your most unique sound.
1. Pay attention. That seems simple enough right? Nope. It’s not that easy. Our minds want to go every which way. But see if you can pay attention to how your voice feels and sounds to you in everyday conversation. This will give you a better sense of how your voice actually feels. Is it high and light? Is it deep and dark? Is it forward and brassy a little bit? Also, your voice will shift and change based off of your intention. By that I mean, if I’m talking to someone that I love, I’m going to approach my voice differently than if I feel angry or threatened. If you have a type of day to day experience that doesn’t come in contact with too many people, you can simply read aloud and observe the natural speech patterns of your own voice. Remember, all great singing is not that different in essence than speaking. So start by observing your natural speech.
2. Model other artists. I say this with a tad bit of caution. We don’t want to become clones of other artists. Today’s video is all about finding YOUR unique sound. The whole idea is to be different. However, we can explore a lot about our own voices simply by modeling others artists. We can use their sound filtered through our own bodies as a means of exploring a new area. Treat it like play time! Get in touch with that new area of your voice and then add your unique personality to it.
3. Get in touch with who you are. This is my favorite! This is the end to which we work! We want strong, capable voices true. But we want to be able to express freely who we are. In the end, that is more important to us. So start by making a list. It doesn’t have to be a long list. But focus on different essences that you would use to describe yourself. For example, I am…playful, child like, mischievous, sassy. These characteristics may be dominant in your personality and they will most certainly carry over into your sound. Then ask your friends and family to describe your personality in one word as well. This will let you know if there are common themes in the way you see yourself, as well as the way others are responding to you.

Eddie Vedder is the Pearl Jam's frontman. Also, he has a solo career, with two released albums. Eddie is known by his deep low notes and raspy vocals, especially in high chest notes, but his voice can produce a clear sound too. A great vocal range. Lowest Fry Note: C1 (Gehenna) Lowest Chest Note: C2 (Gently) Highest Chest Note: D5 (Hell & Consequences) Highest Mixed Note: F#5 (Surgery) Highest Whistle Note: C#7 (Tar Poo) Corey taylor is an American musician, author, and actor, best known as the lead singer and lyricist of the heavy metal band Slipknot and hard rock/alternative metal band Stone Sour. Taylor was also found, to possess the second-highest vocal range of any known singer in popular music with a range of 6,1 octaves. He was beaten only by Mike Patton (6 octaves). I know some of his lowest notes are not sung notes. I wasnt expecting all those whistle tones. It was a big surprise for me. His high notes in chest voice have an INSANE quality.
