There are many rare and endangered species living on the island, including the famous Tasmanian devil. The population on Tasmania reached 517,000 in 2015 and the locals are heavily migrated to the metropolitan area and island state capital Hobart. 6 - Socotra, Yemen – Socotra consists of four islands that reside in the Indian Ocean. Mostly inaccessible due to political turbulence and the fact that it’s not equipped for tourists, it would be very difficult to travel to the island. From the dolphins gliding just so far away from the coast to the span of dragon’s blood trees along the islands vast forest – this island is definitely a remote place that few outsiders ever get to experience. Socotra is 83 miles long and has been ruled by Arabia, although it lies closer to Africa. Locals to the island are called Socotrans and there are roughly 25,000 living there now. 5 - Papua New Guinea – Papua is a culturally diverse country with over 7 million people living on almost 180,000 square miles. Despite this fact, it is still one of the least explored islands in the world – both geographically and culturally. Parts of the island are so untouched, it’s believed that there may be unidentified plants and animals and even possibly uncontacted people. The island has 429 different varieties of coral and 269 species of birds. Jungle clad mountains stretch out above and amazing sea life can be found below the waters. 4 - Channel Islands, California – The Channel Islands are a throwback to a time when California was uninhabited and consists of eight islands in the Pacific Ocean. Besides being a beautiful natural island, this is also the first place in North America an archaeological piece of evidence was found of a human being. Having one of the most impressive marine ecosystems in the world, the Channel Islands have many species of plants and animals that are unique to the islands. There are many plans being made to conserve the islands’ endemic species. 3 - Bird Island – Bird Island is located in the Seychelles archipelago and is known for its birds – hence the name. There are more than a million sooty terns that live on the island. The naturally beautiful island has been turned into a private resort with a small landing strip. There are 26 bungalows that lie on the beautiful beaches with phenomenal cuisine. The marine life is exceptional and it has a large population of green turtles, whales and dolphins. Inhabited by the Kuna Indians, San Blas Island is almost exactly as it was in the 16th century. The Kuna people pray to a god named Erragon whom they believe died for them. When walking through one of the 49 inhabited islands you will see children practicing folk dances in the roads, women stitching their authentic tapestries and men fishing for crabs and lobsters. If you’re visiting, you’ll sleep in 100% eco-friendly accommodations, including natural materials made with things found in the jungle and on the island by the Kuna Indians.
