George Burns (January 20, 1896 – March 9, 1996), born Naftaly Birnbaum, was an American comedian, actor, and writer.
He was one of the few entertainers whose career successfully spanned vaudeville, film, radio, and television. His arched eyebrow and cigar smoke punctuation became familiar trademarks for over three quarters of a century. Beginning at the age of 79, Burns' career was resurrected as an amiable, beloved and unusually active old comedian, continuing to work until shortly before his death, in 1996, at the age of 100.
Naftaly (late called Nathan) Birnbaum was the ninth of 12 children born to Louis and Dorah (nèe Bluth) Birnbaum, Jewish immigrants who had come to the United States from Romania. Burns was an active member of the First Roumanian-American congregation. His father was a substitute cantor at the local synagogue but usually worked as a coat presser. During the influenza epidemic of 1903, Lippe Birnbaum contracted the flu and died at the age of 47. Nattie (as he was then called) went to work to help support the family, shining shoes, running errands, and selling newspapers.

Reposted at long last, here is the full video for the only episode of the Burns and Allen show to be filmed in color, the premiere of season 5 (originally aired on Oct 4, 1954). I'd uploaded this to the Vintage Comedy Vault channel a couple of years ago, but that channel was unceremoniously deleted by YouTube due to outrageous copyright claims. The only copies of this episode in syndicated reruns have all been in black and white. As far as I know, the color version was shown only once. In this episode, George has invited a pair of TV critics over to watch the season premiere of George and Gracie's ""show"". From Season 14, first broadcast on January 7, 1964: Old buddies Benny and Burns trade jokes and insults. George needles him about his pettiness in golfing before recalling their first meeting during the vaudeville days. In the flashback, they are each staying in a seedy boarding house when they decide to team up. Their act, full of awful jokes and ridiculous songs, is a flop. Jack, being Jack, demands a raise, even though they aren't making a dime. George claims their problem is Benny; anyone could do Jack's part better — even the landlord's daughter. First George Burns Special since 1959. This was aired in 1976 and it is dated by the clothing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. After reading George Burns autobiographies I learned that he was a failure in show business until he met Gracie Allen and at the time they met she was teamed with another male act. George talks about how this drove him crazy because he knew that team acts often became romantic. It took George a whole year to convince Gracie Allen to team with him. They got married in 1926. The rest is history but to George's credit he always gave Gracie the credit for their success. Gracie died Aug. 27, 1964, age 69 {Her birth certificate was lost in a fire during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Her true birth date was 1895 one year older than George}. Many critics predicted that George would fall on his face without Gracie and he proved them wrong. Reposted at long last, here is the full video for the only episode of the Burns and Allen show to be filmed in color, the premiere of season 5 (originally aired on Oct 4, 1954). I'd uploaded this to the Vintage Comedy Vault channel a couple of years ago, but that channel was unceremoniously deleted by YouTube due to outrageous copyright claims.
The only copies of this episode in syndicated reruns have all been in black and white. As far as I know, the color version was shown only once. In this episode, George has invited a pair of TV critics over to watch the season premiere of George and Gracie's ""show"".
The color balance is definitely off in this copy (I tinkered with it the best I could), but still, it's quite a treat to see George and Gracie in color-- color television didn't take off until many years after Gracie's retirement. Gracie was supposed to have been very resistant to being filmed in color due to her insecurity over having eyes that were different colors, but it's not at all visible here.

This is a very special episode of the Burns and Allen Show that has been pulled out of the syndication package (Season 6, episode 28, originally aired April 9, 1956). My best guess as to why is that there are two numbers in black face, and if these are removed, the remaining show is too short to fill the time slot.
In this episode, George stages a vaudeville show to raise funds for son Ronnie's dramatic school. Among the many, many highlights: Ronnie and a schoolmate performing a Burns and Allen routine; Gracie's one and only dramatic moment in the entire series, perhaps her entire career; George getting his due as a vaudeville expert (rather than simply being subjected to the endless put downs he normally gets); Gracie emceeing the show-within-a-show all by herself (she *very* rarely performed without George); and several pastiches of classic vaudeville acts, like Eddie Cantor's and Sophie Tucker's.
Please note that at times the video quality will shift dramatically-- these are instances of scenes I've spliced in from older reruns to cover the edits in the version aired on ME-TV. ME-TV aired the show minus the black face numbers, but it appears that Antenna TV has decided not to rerun this episode at all. I understand the sensitivity surrounding black face, but it's a real shame this particular show had to be pulled, since it is truly one of the most unique episodes they ever did.
Respectful comments about the appropriateness of black face and/or the editing out of same are perfectly fine, but please be forewarned: I will not allow the comments sections on my videos to become a playground for the useless political arguments found almost everywhere else on YouTube. If you feel compelled to pontificate on the black face numbers, PLEASE-- keep it civil, and remember that the purpose of sharing this video is that it's a great "lost" episode of Burns and Allen. I'm not attempting to justify the black face performances by posting them.
All I want to say on this subject is that it was a different time, and regardless of how legitimately offensive this is to us now, it was *not* intended as a slight against African Americans.

This is a particularly interesting episode, in part for the truly wonderful MG segment with George Burns where he gets FOUR FULL MINUTES afterwards to be funny. It was a rarity for mystery guests to stick around at all after the game was over, but the amount of time George gets here may be unparalleled. The other reason this show is unique is that Mr. Daly is acting very, very strange throughout the entire program. I won't offer my particular speculation on the cause of this behavior, but I think anyone who knows the show well would agree that this is not the usual John Charles Daly we're seeing here!

First George Burns Special since 1959. This was aired in 1976 and it is dated by the clothing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. After reading George Burns autobiographies I learned that he was a failure in show business until he met Gracie Allen and at the time they met she was teamed with another male act. George talks about how this drove him crazy because he knew that team acts often became romantic. It took George a whole year to convince Gracie Allen to team with him. They got married in 1926. The rest is history but to George's credit he always gave Gracie the credit for their success. Gracie died Aug. 27, 1964, age 69 {Her birth certificate was lost in a fire during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Her true birth date was 1895 one year older than George}. George never remarried and he died Mar. 9. 1996, 100yrs. old and was buried with copies of his music. George put Gracie's new birth date on the grave stone Jul. 26, 1902 (Why not?). I think the story of George and Gracie would make a great movie.

On March 9, 1996, 49 days after his centenary, Burns died in his Beverly Hills home of cardiac arrest at age 100. His funeral was held three days later at the Wee Kirk o' the Heather church in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Glendale, California. Out of all the George Burns TV Specials this is my personal favorite. George was at the highest point in his professional life. Many critics predicted that George would fall on his face without Gracie and he proved them wrong. In his earlier Autobiographies George said that he wanted to be recognized as a great singer and have a number one hit, maybe part joke but I believe that he truly wanted that as a bucket list item. George would say many times that a great singer needed a great opening song and a great finishing song so that you would forget all the dull stuff in the middle. This TV Special features his greatest finishing song ever and for the rest of his career his theme song, “I WISH I WAS 18 AGAIN”. The show was filmed live at the GRAND OLE OPRY™ in Nashville Tennessee were George was recording a country album. The energy in that theater can be felt and this also added to the performances of his guest. Loretta Lynn and the Gatlin Brothers never sounded better. What a treat to see Minnie Pearl the oldest teenager in America with her hat and its price tag still attached, truly a GRAND OLE OPRY™ ICON! I enjoy watching the Cloggers, a dance form almost extinct, also, Gracie Allen's father was a clogg dancer. You don’t have to like country music to enjoy this show so get some popcorn and a drink lay back and be entertained.

George also had an advantage in that he was one of the few people who could make Jack Benny laugh by doing "simple" things that no one else would find funny {and Jack was an easy "laugher"}- such as rolling down his car window and motioning Jack to pull over in the middle of busy Hollywood traffic, then driving off as if he had no intention of stopping to talk to him at all. As Jack later recalled, it took over a half-hour to compose himself before he could safely manuver his way into traffic again. So during the "dueling monologists" scene, watch closely at how Jack tries to keep from laughing out loud when George ad-libs a bit...

Martha Proctor believes something evil has come to her home. Her nephew Dr. Dan Proctor arrives with his betrothed, Evelyn Heath, who is a frail invalid. Evelyn is introduced to Aunt Martha as well as Dan's older brother, Douglas, an illustrator, along with Douglas's wife Ann and his model, Miriam.
The women sympathize with Evelyn, knowing of the hard life she has had. Evelyn has bouts of hysteria, involving her fear of birds, and also keeps a secret diary in which she mocks her fiancee Dan and expresses a desire for Douglas instead.
While plotting to seduce Douglas, and accusing Dan of jealousy to make him leave, Evelyn next sets out to rid the house of Miriam, whom she sees as a rival. Her gossip succeeds in getting back to Aunt Martha and turning everyone's suspicions to Miriam, who departs.
Douglas then quarrels with Ann, driven apart by Evelyn's diabolical schemes. Evelyn goes so far as to destroy the goodbye note Ann has written to him. By the time everyone realizes who's behind all this and decide to commit Evelyn to an asylum, a hysterical Evelyn flees from the house, screaming, and plunges to her death.
