George Frederic Watts. Birth: Feb. 23, 1817 Death: Jul. 1, 1904. English painter, portrait painter and sculptor, the father of British Symbolism, he specialized in historical and allegorical subjects. In his time he was called "The Victorian Michaelangelo". Watts knew most of the Pre-Raphaelites, and was an important influence on the younger members of the movement. However, he was part of no school or group, and maintained an individual vision. His first major work was "Caratacus Led in Triumph through the Streets of Rome", which won a prize of 300 guineas and was exhibited in Westminster Hall in 1842. He gave away many of his paintings, among them a version of "Love and Life", described by The Magazine of Art as "without question one of the most beautiful canvases he has ever execut...

Hesquiaht Chiefs perform at the memorial potlatch held in honor of Wawmeesh, George Watts of the Tseshaht First Nation. This is a hinkeets (sea serpent headdress) dance. The family of the late Wawmeesh (George Watts) held a grand three day potlatch in November 2006 attended by thousands in honor of an amazing person. The potlatch was about 45 hrs throughout the three days. George touched the lives of many, and was an amazing family man. The Hesquiaht Chiefs were one of many nations to bring out their Huupuukwanum (Treasures of the chief) during this 3 day memorial potatch.
